As we head into the final weeks of our exhibition Nga Huhua: Abundance, we’ve loved seeing the different ways organisations across Tāmaki Makaurau are creating experiences that encourage connection with our oceans 🌊 Our friends at Te Whatu Stardome are hosting an immersive cinematic experience this June 🐋

Sounds of the Ocean combines sounds of whales & dolphins, original music, immersive visual art and award-winning ocean imagery to guide the audience on a mindful underwater journey.

In a society burdened with stress, this transformative project offers calm and rest. It is an invitation to forge a deep connection with the enchanting life that dwells beneath the waves.

Today we’re celebrating 🍷

Or, as we’d argue it should really be known: International Day of the Bottle That, Once Emptied, Becomes the Perfect Vessel for a Model Ship in a Bottle!⛵

Because while some see an empty bottle… model makers see potential (and a good challenge of course)!

Early risers, this one’s for you 🌅

We’re excited to present a special sunrise concert experience at the museum! A meditative 90-minute journey inspired by the traditions of Indian classical music and its connection to water, dawn, and healing.

As the sun rises over the harbour, settle in for a series of live performances shaped by the calm, reflective mood of early morning ragas, melodies traditionally played at daybreak to bring clarity and peace.

Featuring four incredible performances:

✨ Rubab — Teja Singh
✨ Sitar — Shalu Garg
✨ Hindustani raga vocals — Daljeet Kaur
✨ Tabla solo — Manjit Singh

📍 Friday 29 May
⏰ 6.30am–8am
🎟️ $15 per person

The ocean has always connected people, cultures and communities.

This International Museum Day, we’re reflecting on the theme Museums Uniting a Divided World and the important role museums play as spaces for connection, dialogue and understanding.

At the Maritime Museum, we are so so proud to share stories of voyaging, migration, navigation and exchange, stories that remind us of the ties that bind us across oceans and generations. 🌊

Pink Shirt Day is all about celebrating diversity and helping make our schools, workplaces, and communities safe, welcoming, and inclusive by taking a stand against bullying 🩷

For Pink Shirt Day, we went on a gallery‑wide colour hunt - finding all the pink hiding in our galleries! 🩷

We are excited to announce that the wonderful Manahua – A Weavers’ Collective will be at the Maritime Museum on select Saturdays each month from May through to the end of the year.

Join us for the first session on Sunday 23 May, from 10.30am – 3pm. Free drop-ins welcome.

Experience traditional weaving live at the Maritime Museum as Manahua share their weaving practice, stories, and creative journey. Over the past two years at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (Māngere campus), the collective has been learning, practising and creating kete, tāniko, kākahu, korowai, and now tukutuku panels.

Come and spend some time with Manahua. Sit and watch the weaving take shape, ask questions, or pull up a chair for a kōrero.
