Ngฤ mihi nui to everyone who joined us yesterday to hear artists Karl Fritsch and Gavin Hipkins in conversation with gallerist Hamish McKay, and celebrate the opening of our three new exhibitions:

Our thanks to Sara McClintock, Aratoi Museum Director, and Hamish McKay Gallery, Wellington for their support of Karl and Gavin. We also acknowledge the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic, and the newly appointed Head of School, Matt Ellwood, for their continued partnership in providing graduating students the opportunity to showcase their work in Tฤmaki Makaurau.

If you missed the opening, there is plenty of time to visit. All three exhibitions are on view until 17 January.

We are delighted to announce that Ella Owen (Year 13, KingsWay School) is the winner of the ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ'๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—”๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ for her painting ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ.

More than 1,000 visitors to our National Secondary School Art Awards Finalistsโ€™ Exhibition voted for their favourite artwork, and Ellaโ€™s extraordinary painting received the most votes.

Of her work, Ella says: โ€œThis is a painting of a tiger done in oil paints. It took me 3 months to complete, and throughout the process I experimented with different layering and paint techniques in order to create depth and realism along with expressive elements. Through this painting, I wanted to achieve a deep gaze in the tiger's eyes as if it is looking into the distance. I also played with the colours, making them more saturated and higher contrast than the reference image to create a more dramatic effect.โ€

Generously sponsored by McDonaldโ€™s Lynfield, the Peopleโ€™s Choice Award comes with a $500 cash prize. Congratulations, Ella!

This announcement wraps up the 14th edition of the National Secondary School Art Awards. Thank you to all the finalists, their teachers, our sponsors, and to everyone who took part and supported this yearโ€™s event. Keep following us for updates on the 2027 Awards!

Tiaki is a space abundant with soft sculptures of both taniwha and tuna (the corporeal representation of the taniwha) โ€“ as the living embodiment of kaitiaki, allowing comfort and protection for all those who encounter them. They serve as messengers between the deceased and the spirit realms of ngฤ atua and are important expressions of pลซrฤkau.

For the artists Kiara Schaumkell (Ngฤpuhi, Tลซwharetoa) and Aliyah Edwards (Te Rarawa, Pฤkehฤ), these forms manifest from their lived and familial experiences within Te Ao Mฤori. The textiles act as examples of Western media techniques that influence their practice, while the forms and woven surfaces speak directly to their whakapapa.
