This work sends a wish to Waipunarangi to guide the waters that gather in the sky, protecting communities living alongside rivers, coasts, and flood-prone landscapes. A second wish is offered to Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, calling for man-made structures to abide by nature. Through rigid forms constrained by natural materials, the work explores a future where harmony is not chosen but imposed. Where people are ultimately forced to adapt to the enduring power of the whenua, water, and sky.

We are honoured to hold this work in our matapihi toi by makers and friends Uku Rangi and Te Atamea, here is a little bit about them,

Uku Rangi, also known as Skye (Whakatōhea, Ngāti Maniapoto, & Ngāti Tūwharetoa), is an early-career artist, writer, and editor, based in Tāmaki Makaurau, raised in Tauranga Moana. Working across moving image, sculpture, sound, and uku, their practice explores climate change, urban infrastructure, Indigenous futurisms, & wai. With a key focus on flooding, they ask how we might shift from containing water to living with it.

Te Atamea (Tūhoe) is an early career Māori artist and designer based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Working across mixed media including digital design and moving image, her practice explores culture, belonging, Māori futurism and contemporary approaches to traditional Māori design.

Co-directed by Anapela Polata’ivao and Vela Manusaute, both legendary within pasifika story telling.

talanoaaga fa’alilolilo — private conversations

This work takes the form of a Samoan flag stretched in space. During the making process, fragments of private conversations, passing comments, and small moments were stitched directly into the surface of the flag. The text appears imperfectly and in different shades of red and blue, blending into the colours of the flag rather than standing out.
The stitching sits quietly, like whispers or overheard talk. Rather than presenting a single story, the work holds what happened around it as it was being made conversations, thoughts, and moments that became part of the process. The flag becomes both a familiar symbol and a personal record, reflecting how stories and language move through family spaces: softly, out of order, and shaped by who is present.

Presented during Samoan Language Week, the work acknowledges language as something lived and shared, carried through everyday conversations rather than formal declaration.

Resting Tūī Face Longsleeve by Whaea Māia!!

This one’s for the baddies with the resting frown and a side eye that could kill. This manu sits on your poho as a gentle warning: yeah… don’t pmo.

There’s kōrero about the tūī’s vocal box, and how they can sing in frequencies the human ear can’t even hear.
Makes you wonder what they’re really saying when they bully the smaller manu out of the trees… or if those little ones can even understand their kōrero either.

Sweet songs, savage when necessary.
