Kaitiakitanga by Haare Williams opens at Papakura Art Gallery in one week!

Every year in early September, the kuaka (bar-tailed godwit) arrives in New Zealand from Alaska after an incredible 14,000 kilometre non-stop flight. The kuaka, alongside stories of taniwha, patupaiarehe and deities such as Papatūānuku, enrich our cultural and spiritual landscape, reflecting the concept of kaitiakitanga.

A Western conceptualisation of the world, based on capital wealth and neoliberal ideology, is only one way of understanding and structuring society. The extraordinary migration of the kuaka invites us to consider other possibilities, reminding us that Indigenous cultures offer different ways of understanding our relationship with the natural world.

Yesterday’s Art Club was a blast, with tamariki getting the chance to play with clay! It was a messy but fun experience, seeing everyone use their imagination to create all sorts of things.

From little creatures to abstract shapes and everything in between, it was wonderful seeing everyone get stuck in and enjoy the process of working with clay.

Important notice: There will be no Art Club for the next two weeks while the gallery is closed for wall painting and exhibition installation. We look forward to welcoming everyone back after the break!

Yesterday at Art Club, tamariki learned the basics of paper weaving, inspired by the woven fabric artworks in our current exhibition, Matariki hunga nui. They began by drawing shapes onto black paper with oil pastels before cutting and weaving strips of coloured paper through their artwork.

It was wonderful seeing the different colour combinations and repeating patterns emerge as everyone experimented with the weaving process.

Tomorrow at Art Club, tamariki will be learning the basics of paper weaving, inspired by the woven fabric artworks in our current exhibition, Matariki hunga nui. We’ll be exploring how to weave strips of paper together, experimenting with different colours and patterns along the way.
