Gallery Gunnar Berg shows a large collection of paintings by one of Lofoten’s most famous artists. Gunnar Berg (1863-1893) died young, but left a strong mark on art history.
In the gallery you can also study Gunnar Berg’s most famous work, The Battle of Troldfjorden. It is a magnificent and distinctive painting, depicting a famous and dramatic event that took place during the Lofoten fishery in 1890.
Gunnar Berg was born in 1863. He grew up on Svinøya in Svolvær, where his father was a squire and merchant. In 1882, Berg started at the business school in Bergen, but his business studies were quickly interrupted in favour of the art academy in Düsseldorf in Germany and a busy artistic life with commuting between Germany and Lofoten.
Gunnar Berg was one of the first depictors of nature in Lofoten. He found the motifs primarily in his hometown of Svolvær. He was in a special position in his time, as one of the few artists born and raised in Lofoten with an education from an art academy. The local affiliation can perhaps be seen through how he, to a greater extent than other painters of the time, is concerned with depicting public life, and not just the magnificent nature. He paints fishermen at work and the activity on the quay, he paints fisherman’s cabins, fishing boats and merchant vessels.
A visit to Gallery Gunnar Berg is therefore both an encounter with Lofoten’s history and art history.
