Richard Roland Holst, “Lucifer Treurspel
van Vondel,” 1910.

Lucifer, the fallen angel from Christian theology, has been a recurring figure in literature and poetry. In the early 20th century, Dutch painter Richard Roland Holst (1868–1938) was commissioned by the theatre company De N.V. Het Tooneel to design a poster, costumes, and stage decor for Lucifer, a tragic five-act play. Initially reluctant, Roland Holst declined multiple requests from the director, Dr. Willem Cornelis Royaards before finally accepting. The play, adapted from Joost van den Vondel’s work, premiered on January 9, 1911, with music by Hubert Cuypers.

In the play, Lucifer is a proud, envious figure—jealous of God’s greatness, humanity’s creation in God’s image, and the command for angels to serve humans. Overcome by envy, he seeks to prevent humanity’s ascent to heaven, leading a rebellion against Archangel Michael. The war ends in Lucifer’s defeat and eternal banishment to hell.

The poster’s depiction of Lucifer is inspired by Belgian artist George Minne’s Fontein met knielende figuren (Fountain with Kneeling Figures, 1898).

Our latest exhibition “Jan Toorop, his circle & Bart Van Der Leck” just opened this week! Don’t miss the beautiful posters on our first floor.

Toorop was one of the most influential painters from the turn of the century (1890-1910). Most notably is his poster for the Delft Salad Oil Company NOF which became famous and the Dutchversion of art nouveau, sometimes still called “salad-oil style” or “spaghetti style”.

Bart van der Leck (1876-1958) worked in decorative arts with stained glass, illustrations and also paintings. Learn more about him and other contemporaries in the exhibition. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am -5pm. 💛
