Precies 128 jaar geleden werd de wereld een groot kunstenaar rijker: M.C. Escher werd geboren. Als getalenteerd graficus maakte hij in zijn kunst het onmogelijke mogelijk. In zijn prenten toont hij gelaagde landschappen, ingenieuze architectuur, zelfbedachte werelden en fascinerende vlakvullingen. Hij bespeelt zijn kijkers met zijn optische illusies, extreme perspectieven, spannende reflecties en slimme ontdekkingen. Met deze prenten zou hij uitgroeien tot de beroemde graficus zoals wij hem nu kennen. Zijn indrukwekkende oeuvre blijft tot op de dag van vandaag wereldwijd mensen fascineren en inspireren.

Exactly 128 years ago, the world gained a great artist: M.C. Escher was born. As a talented printmaker, he made the impossible possible in his art. In his prints, he depicts layered landscapes, ingenious architecture, imaginary worlds and fascinating patterns. He captivates his viewers with his optical illusions, extreme perspectives, intriguing reflections and clever discoveries. It was through these prints that he would go on to become the famous artist we know today. His impressive body of work continues to fascinate and inspire people worldwide to this day.

Vandaag is het de geboorte- en sterfdag van Helena van der Kraan. Oorspronkelijk opgeleid als graficus en schilder, kennen we haar vooral als fotograaf. Met haar eerste camera, die ze in 1970 kocht, legde ze vooral performances van haar man Axel vast, maar fotografie zou uitgroeien tot haar medium. De nadruk op lijnen en patronen uit haar verleden als graficus bleef hierin altijd te zien. Ook hield Van der Kraan tot haar dood in 2020 vast aan analoge fotografie en ontwikkelde ze haar foto's zelf. Een groot deel van het oeuvre van Van der Kraan bestaat uit foto’s van alledaagse objecten, zelfportretten en portretten van mensen die dicht bij haar stonden. Ook maakte ze verschillende series van musea.

Zo maakte ze tussen 1995 en 2003 regelmatig foto’s in Paleis Lange Voorhout. Ze fotografeerde de zalen in volle glorie, waarbij ze vaak mensen in beeld bracht die naar de kunst keken. Ze liet de nieuwe bestemming van dit oude woonhuis als museum volledig tot zijn recht komen. Tegelijkertijd ademen haar foto’s ook nog de intimiteit van de voormalige paleiszalen. Today marks the anniversary of Helena van der Kraan’s birth and death. Originally trained as a graphic designer and painter, she is best known to us as a photographer. With her first camera, which she bought in 1970, she mainly documented her husband Axel’s performances, but photography would go on to become her medium. The emphasis on lines and patterns from her past as a graphic designer remained evident in her work. Van der Kraan also stuck to analogue photography until her death in 2020 and developed her own photographs. A large part of Van der Kraan’s oeuvre consists of photographs of everyday objects, self-portraits and portraits of people close to her. She also produced several series of museums.

Between 1995 and 2003, she regularly took photos in Paleis Lange Voorhout. She photographed the halls in all their glory, often portraying people viewing the art. She did justice to the new purpose of this old house as a museum. At the same time, her photos also exude the intimacy of the former palace halls. Op dit moment draait Backrooms in de bioscopen. Het debuut van filmmaker Kane Parsons is een film die je gezien moet hebben. In Backrooms ontdekt de eigenaar van een meubelwinkel een gigantisch netwerk van bizarre ruimtes achter een muur in zijn zaak. Aan dit labyrint van zandkleurige vloeren, gele muren, verzonken en samengesmolten meubels, trappen en doorgangen lijkt geen einde te komen. Het labyrint roept duidelijk associaties op met de wereld van M.C. Escher, vooral met zijn beroemde prent Relativiteit. Dus ga in de bioscoop dwalen door de Backrooms en laat je in het museum verbazen door het genie van Escher.

Backrooms is currently showing in cinemas. Filmmaker Kane Parsons’ debut is a must-see. In Backrooms, the owner of a furniture shop discovers a vast network of bizarre rooms behind a wall in his shop. This labyrinth of sand-coloured floors, yellow walls, sunken and fused furniture, staircases and passageways seems to go on forever. The labyrinth clearly evokes associations with the world of M.C. Escher, particularly his famous print Relativity. So go and wander through the Backrooms at the cinema, and let yourself be amazed by Escher’s genius at the museum.

Vanaf vandaag is de tentoonstelling Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives te zien! Wij zijn alle deelnemende kunstenaars ontzettend dankbaar voor de samenwerking en dat we samen met hen dit prachtige verhaal naar Het Paleis hebben kunnen brengen.
Eén van deze kunstenaars is Siddiqa Juma, wiens werk zich kenmerkt door ritmische structuur en ontstaat uit een meditatief maakproces. Haar kunst nodigt uit tot openheid, contemplatie en een voortdurende zoektocht. Net als Escher, is Juma getraind als graficus, iets dat je terug ziet in hoe ze de ruimte in haar werk indeelt.
Het werk van Juma is vanaf vandaag tot en met 1 november te zien bij Escher in Het Paleis. Samen met dat van 19 andere hedendaagse kunstenaars gaat het de dialoog aan met islamitische geometrische traditie en het werk van Escher. Zien we je snel?

The exhibition ‘Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives’ opened today! We are incredibly grateful to all the participating artists for their collaboration and for enabling us to bring this wonderful story to The Palace.
One of these artists is Siddiqa Juma, whose work is characterised by rhythmic structure and emerges from a meditative creative process. Her art invites openness, contemplation and a constant quest. Like Escher, Juma trained as a graphic artist, something that is reflected in how she organises space in her work. Juma’s work is on display at Escher in The Palace from today until 1 November. Vandaag is het de geboortedag van Donald Judd (1928-1994), een vooraanstaand vertegenwoordiger van het minimalisme. Deze kunstbeweging, die in de jaren ’60 opkwam in Amerika, kenmerkt zich door het gebruik van simpele geometrische vormen en industriële materialen, alsook het weglaten van emotie, symboliek en figuratie.
Judd ontwierp de vloer in Het Paleis, hierin zie je de kenmerken van het minimalisme ook terug. Het patroon is per verdieping ontworpen en ligt op de begane grond en eerste verdieping. Judd heeft daarbij dus geen rekening gehouden met de verdeling van de ruimtes. Zowel in de lengte als in de breedte heeft hij op een kwart, een derde en de helft lijnen over de gehele etage laten leggen. Elke lijn heeft een eigen breedte en kleur. Het parket gaat volledig op in de historische paleiszalen en is daarmee zeker tijdloos te noemen.

Today marks the birthday of Donald Judd (1928–1994), a leading figure in Minimalism. This art movement, which emerged in America in the 1960s, is characterised by the use of simple geometric shapes and industrial materials, as well as the omission of emotion, symbolism and figuration.
Judd designed the floor in The Palace, and the characteristics of minimalism are also evident here. The pattern was designed for each floor and is laid on the ground floor and first floor. Judd therefore did not take the layout of the rooms into account. Both lengthwise and widthwise, he had lines laid across the entire floor at quarter, one-third and half intervals. Each line has its own width and colour. The parquet blends seamlessly into the historic palace halls and can certainly be described as timeless.

Tijdens zijn bezoek aan het Alhambra en de Mezquita in Andalusië, raakt Escher diep geïnspireerd door de gekleurde, geometrische mozaïeken die hij daar ziet. Hij ontwerpt zelf ook een blauw en groen majolica-tegelpatroon voor zijn appartement in Rome. In een schrift onderzoekt hij het systeem achter de naadloze patronen en tekent hij het ontwerp uit. De tegels werden in een zigzagpatroon in het appartement gelegd. Ze raakten echter los en de kinderen van het gezin Escher vonden het geweldig om er hard met de driewieler overheen te crossen, genietend van het ratelende geluid dat ze maakten.

During his visit to the Alhambra and the Mezquita in Andalusia, Escher was deeply inspired by the colourful, geometric mosaics he saw there. He also designed a blue and green majolica tile pattern for his flat in Rome. In a notebook, he explored the system behind the seamless patterns and sketched out the design. The tiles were laid in a zigzag pattern in the flat. However, they came loose and Escher's children loved racing their tricycles over them, enjoying the rattling sound they made.

Met trots deelt Escher in Het Paleis dat Farwa Moledina deel zal nemen aan Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives! In deze tentoonstelling staat centraal hoe Escher zich liet inspireren door de Spaans-Islamitische geometrie en beeldtaal, iets dat kunstenaars vandaag de dag nog steeds inspireert.

Het werk van Moledina sluit hier prachtig op aan, zoals ze zelf in deze video ook goed uitlegt. In haar kunstwerken biedt ze een genuanceerde kijk op moslim-identiteit en de manier waarop moslimvrouwen historisch gezien in kunst geportretteerd zijn. Moledina onderzoekt thema’s als moederschap en kolonialisme in oriëntalistische kunst. Haar beeldtaal kenmerkt zich door patronen, symmetrie, abstractie en herhaling. Inspiratie hiervoor haalt ze uit de islamitische geometrische traditie, net als Escher deed.

Escher in The Palace is proud to announce that Farwa Moledina will be taking part in Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives! This exhibition focuses on how Escher drew inspiration from Spanish-Islamic geometry and visual language, a source of inspiration for artists to this day.

Moledina’s work ties in beautifully with this, as she herself explains in this video. In her artworks, she offers a nuanced perspective on Muslim identity and the way in which Muslim women have historically been portrayed in art. Moledina explores themes such as motherhood and colonialism in Orientalist art. Her visual language is characterised by patterns, symmetry, abstraction and repetition. She draws inspiration for this from the Islamic geometric tradition, just as Escher did.

Moledina’s work is on display at Escher in The Palace from 10 June to 1 November. Alongside 19 other contemporary artists, it engages in a dialogue with the Islamic geometric tradition and the work of Escher. Will we see you there?

In de prent 'Boven en onder' (1947) bereikt Escher de perfectie in het toepassen van het gebogen perspectief, waardoor een onmogelijke architectonische constructie ontstaat. Als je de bovenste of onderste helft van de prent zou afdekken, zou je zien dat alle perspectieflijnen van de helft die je bekijkt naar een verdwijnpunt lopen. Hierdoor kost het een tweede keer kijken om te zien dat wat je ziet, niet kan bestaan. Opvallend in deze architectonische fantasie zijn de afwisselende stenen in de bogen, een detail dat doet denken aan het zuilenwoud van de Mezquita in Córdoba. Daar creëren de rode en witte boogstenen een ritmisch patroon dat de bogen optisch lichter maakt en de ruimte diepte geeft. Die dynamiek keert subtiel terug in Eschers architectonische spel. In the print ‘Up and Down’ (1947), Escher achieves perfection in his use of curved perspective, creating an impossible architectural structure. If you were to cover the top or bottom half of the print, you would see that all the perspective lines in the half you are looking at converge at a vanishing point. This means you have to look a second time to realise that what you are seeing cannot exist. A striking feature of this architectural fantasy is the alternating stones in the arches, a detail reminiscent of the forest of columns in the Mezquita in Córdoba. There, the red and white arch stones create a rhythmic pattern that makes the arches appear lighter and gives the space depth. That dynamic is subtly echoed in Escher’s architectural play.
