Guido Almekinders, from Spitfire PR.IV AA804 - Remembering P/O Charles P. Hall, joined us to tell us about Chaz Hall, a photo reconnaissance pilot who had trained to be a photographer before the war, but he had to bail out after engine failure on only his third flight.

As a trained photographer he was tasked with taking and developing the photographs for the escapers ID cards.

After his recapture, he wrote in Latin, on the wall of his cell in Gorlitz prison, the prophetic words “We who are about to die salute you”.

82 years ago today Charles Hall was murdered by the Gestapo, together with Hunk Humphreys, Dutchy Swain, Brian Evans, Wally Valenta, George McGill, Pat Langford, Adam Kolanowski, Bob Stewart and Hank Birkland. They had escaped out of POW camp Stalag Luft 3 through tunnel 'Harry' with a total of 76 prisoners. 73 of which were recaptured. 50 of the recaptured POW's were murdered by order of Hi**er.

Yesterday evening we were invited to the launch of the Great Escape Memorial Foundation with a dinner held in the RAF club in London. It was great to be able to accompany Diana, the niece of Charles Hall, and meet family members of other Great Escapers.

Today it is exactly 82 years ago that "the Great Escape" took place. 76 prisoners of War escaped out of German POW camp Stalag Luft 3 through a hand dug tunnel. 3 of them would reach allied territory and 73 were recaptured. Charles was part of the escape organisation making and developing photographs for fake I.D. cards and was one of the 76 that escaped through the tunnel and one of the 73 recaptured. Hi**er was angry and ordered that 50 of the recaptured POW's were to be shot. Sadly, Charles was one of the 50.

We visited the RAF museum Hendon today. There is a memorial for the 50 murdered officers of the Great Escape in the museum.

84 years ago, on 28 December 1941, Charles flew his third operational mission. His objective was to photograph factories near Dusseldorf and Essen that were recently bombed. For intelligence to be able to assess the effectiveness of the bombing. He flew with Spitfire PR.IV AA804.
On the way back he suffered an engine failure with unknown cause. He bailed out and used his parachute. The aircraft crashed near Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands. Charles was arrested not long after landing and became a POW.
Take-off was at 10.40. It took him approximately 90 minutes to reach the target area and 30 minutes from there to Bergen op Zoom. The crash is reported between 14.05 and 14.30 (European time, which was one hour ahead of English time). This gave him 25-50 minutes in the target area to take photographs.
