Mark Smit Fine Art, located in the former town hall of Ommen, specialises in 19th and 20th century paintings. Together with his wife, Anna Smit-Loor, the lawyer Mark Smit (39 years old) set up his own art dealership in 2002. The collection of paintings from 1820-1970 is one of the largest and most varied in Holland. The 19th century is represented by almost all the great names of the Romantic Scho
ol, the Hague School and the Amsterdam Impressionists. For the 20th century paintings, the emphasis is on the ‘classical moderns’: the Luminists, the artists from the Bergen School and the Groninger Ploeg. Besides the established artists, the collection also contains many high-quality pieces by ‘petit maitres’ and post-war abstracts. Mark Smit Kunsthandel organises three in-house exhibitions a year. In the autumn and spring, the emphasis lies on paintings up to 30,000 Euros. During the most important yearly sale of paintings in February, many works of a quality worthy of a place in a museum are exhibited. For this, a special catalogue is issued, with 120 colour images and art-historical information.
