Hotel Maria Kapel - HMK Artist-in-residence,
exhibition space & cinema
for contemporary visual art

Hotel Maria Kapel (HMK) is an artist-in-residence, exhibition space and cinema for contemporary visual art in the city centre of Hoorn; a historic town 40 kilometres north of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. HMK is a non-profit organization that aims to assist young as well as more established artists from all over the world in the production of new work and promote exchanges between national and inter

national artists, cultural institutions and the public. The studio/exhibition space of HMK is located in an early 15th century chapel, surrounded by a semi-private courtyard. This beautifully tranquil and spacious working environment offers the artists-in-residence a unique space for reflection, experimentation and production. HMK places the artist at the centre of its activities, and stimulates risk-taking as a key element of artistic development. The public programme of exhibitions, screenings, lectures, and publications, aims to challenge perceptions of what constitutes contemporary art, and bring the audience closer to the practice that motivates it.

Welcome our new board members: Iris van Santen, Joyce P**t and Isabel Cordeiro. Together with Maja Bekan, Rosa de Graaf and Csilla Klenyánszki, they now form the HMK board. As HMK enters a new chapter, we are excited to grow together and benefit from the board’s wide range of expertise, perspectives and experience.

Joyce P**t is a cultural policy advisor for the Provincie Zeeland, where she focuses on the visual art field, talent development and strengthening the cultural infrastructure. Her work is shaped by an interest in how art operates within social and regional contexts, bringing a connective and collaborative approach to cultural development.

Isabel Cordeiro is an artist and former HMK-resident. She creates encounters between human and non-human bodies, where material relations unfold through motion and touch, shaped by gravity as a shared condition. She also brings a broad experience from education through her teaching at Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

Iris van Santen has a broad experience in larger institutions like Rijksmuseum and Foam as a projectlead. Her work moves between content and organisation, between artists, audiences and systems, creating formats that not only inform, but open up space for reflection and encounter. She has expanded her practice towards personal development and leadership, including her training in Human Design.

Behind the scenes of ‘Bleekveld’. Bleaching the linnen and subsequently folding them according to the 17th-century method.

‘Bleekveld’ is currently on show in HMK.
Open thurs-sat, 1pm-5pm.

The everyday actions; washing, bleaching, folding, and pressing are approached by Dagmar as forms of reproductive labor that convey a rigid worldview. It is a mentality that is tightly linked to Dutch colonial rule, which accumulated wealth through oppression and enabled the expansion of domestic possessions.

Meet & Greet with Dagmar Bosma!

Textile is the primary material in Dagmar (he/they) their artistic practice, and dyeing with rust is a technique he uses continuously. During the residency, he will explore new and less familiar techniques, such as operating the linen press and conducting archival research.

The opening of ‘Bleekveld’ is on May 1st 16.00-19.00.

and HMK warmly invite you to experience the Bleekveld opening on May 1st, 16.00!

The installation in the chapel unfolds around a group of original 17th-century linen presses, which played an important role in the premodern Dutch household. The Netherlands had its own linen industry, and linen was an important export product that was, among other things, traded for enslaved people. In his installation, Dagmar dyes linen, also known as ‘white gold’, with rust, a reference to colonial violence and to the chapel’s former function as a Artillery House.
