Afgelopen zaterdag hebben we samen met alle andere Hilversumse culturele instellingen het cultuurseizoen geopend, tijdens OPEN035. Heel veel enthousiaste mensen kwamen in onze tent op het Marktplein langs voor de doorlopende workshop collage maken, onder leiding van pauli tobi lewis an mast.

Van jong tot oud, sommigen vol ideeën en anderen volledig op improvisatie, gingen in de weer met tijdschriften, kleuren en foto’s om hun eigen kunstwerk te maken. Ter inspiratie hingen er werken uit de huidige tentoonstelling ‘Layered Realities: Photography & Collage’.

Heel erg bedankt aan iedereen die is langsgekomen, en hopelijk tot snel in het museum!

‘Welcome to the House of the Forgotten Ones’ (2025) van Paulo Chicareli (1993–2026) is vanaf 28 augustus te zien in Fotomuseum Hilversum als onderdeel van ‘Layered Realities: Photography & Collage’.

Paulo zou deelnemen aan de groepstentoonstelling, maar overleed plotseling in de aanloop naar de opening. Samen met zijn familie en vrienden in Brazilië, vrienden in Nederland en de KABK heeft Fotomuseum Hilversum zijn installatie alsnog gerealiseerd. De aantekeningen, aanwijzingen en documentatie die Paulo achterliet vormden daarbij het uitgangspunt.

In ‘Welcome to the House of the Forgotten Ones’ onderzoekt Paulo q***r affectie als politieke daad. Met gevonden fotografie, flyers en posters verbeeldt hij een publieke ruimte waarin q***r liefde en intimiteit vrij en zichtbaar kunnen bestaan.

Onze gedachten gaan uit naar Paulo’s familie, vrienden en iedereen die hem liefhad en met hem samenwerkte.

🇬🇧 From 28 August, Fotomuseum Hilversum presents ‘Welcome to the House of the Forgotten Ones’ (2025) by Paulo Chicareli (1993–2026) as part of ‘Layered Realities.

Paulo was due to take part in the group exhibition but passed away suddenly in the lead-up to its opening. Together with his family and friends in Brazil, friends in the Netherlands and KABK, Fotomuseum Hilversum has now realised his installation, working from the notes, instructions and documentation Paulo left behind.

In this work Paulo explores q***r affection as a political act. Through found photography, flyers and posters, he imagines a public space in which q***r love and intimacy can exist freely and visibly.

Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who loved and worked with him.

“Rather than offering fixed perspectives, I invite you to explore the fluidity of identity, place, and belonging.”

‘Resident Aliens’ by Guanyu Xu explores the nuanced experiences of immigrants within their homes and in today’s post-globalized world. Through spatial collages that combine photography, installation, and performance, the project brings together different places, times, and personal histories. By blurring the boundaries between image, identity, and legal status, the work questions how people are represented and encourages you to engage with identity as something layered, evolving, and open to interpretation.

🇳🇱 “In plaats van vaste perspectieven te bieden, nodig ik je uit om de vloeibaarheid van identiteit, plaats en verbondenheid te verkennen.”

‘Resident Aliens’ van Guanyu Xu onderzoekt de genuanceerde ervaringen van immigranten in hun thuisland en in de huidige post-geglobaliseerde wereld. Door middel van ruimtelijke collages die fotografie, installatie en performance combineren, brengt het project verschillende plaatsen, tijden en persoonlijke geschiedenissen samen. Door de grenzen tussen beeld, identiteit en juridische status te vervagen, stelt het werk vragen over hoe mensen worden gerepresenteerd en moedigt het je aan om identiteit te beschouwen als iets gelaagds, evoluerends en voor interpretatie vatbaars.

“Met mijn installatie wil ik de kracht en de liefde invoelbaar maken die er in zo’n saamhorig protest zit, ook als je er niet zelf bij bent geweest.”

Voor Metropolis M bezocht kunstcriticus Maarten Buser ‘Mother Song II’ van Wineke Gartz. In gesprek met Wineke kijkt hij naar de parallellen tussen protestbeelden uit 1986 en nu, en naar de manier waarop zij die beelden transformeert.

Maarten beschrijft hoe Wineke de “overprikkelende massa” van een demonstratie uit elkaar trekt. Met beeld, geluid, kleur en beweging ontstaat ruimte voor de menselijke kant van protest: solidariteit, liefde, rouw, hoop en woede.

Wineke vertelt over de vredesbeweging waarin haar moeder actief was, haar eigen herinneringen aan de jaren tachtig en waarom dezelfde thema’s veertig jaar later opnieuw urgent zijn.

🇬🇧 “With my installation, I want to make the strength and love within the solidarity of a protest tangible, even if you weren’t there yourself.”

For Metropolis M, art critic Maarten Buser visited Wineke Gartz’s ‘Mother Song II.’ In conversation with Wineke, he explores the parallels between protest images from 1986 and today, and how she transforms them.

Maarten describes how Wineke pulls apart the “overstimulating mass” of a demonstration. Through image, sound, colour and movement, she creates space for the human side of protest: solidarity, love, grief, hope and anger.

Wineke reflects on the peace movement her mother was part of, her memories of the 1980s and why the same issues feel urgent again forty years later.

“Every image has a backstory. By rebuilding iconic photographs as handmade models, we expose the fragile construction behind seemingly unquestionable images”.  
 
In ‘Icons’, Cortis & Sonderegger reflect on the creation of iconic images. In their studio, they experiment with light, depth, and composition. The studio, the tools, and the working method remain deliberately visible. At the intersection of collage, sculpture, and photography, they invite you to rediscover images in our collective memory.

🇳🇱 “Elke afbeelding heeft een achtergrondverhaal. Door iconische foto’s na te maken als handgemaakte modellen, leggen we de kwetsbare constructie bloot achter ogenschijnlijk onberispelijke beelden.”

In ‘Icons’ reflecteren Cortis & Sonderegger op de totstandkoming van iconische beelden. In hun studio experimenteren met licht, diepte en compositie. De studio, het gereedschap en de werkwijze blijven bewust zichtbaar. Op het snijvlak van collage, sculptuur en fotografie nodigen ze je uit om beelden in ons collectieve geheugen opnieuw te ontdekken.

Stap binnen in de wereld van ‘Mother Song II’

In deze multimediale installatie, die kunstenaar Wineke Gartz speciaal op locatie maakte, brengt ze haar fascinatie voor activisme samen met haar onderzoek naar hypnose, ritme en de helende kracht van kunst.

Archiefbeelden en nieuwe video’s van feministische protesten, abstracte vormen, objecten en een speciale soundtrack vloeien samen tot een zintuiglijke ervaring. 
Een werk over actie en verstilling, liefde en pijn, donker en licht. ‘Mother Song II’ nodigt je uit om niet alleen te kijken, maar de installatie ook lichamelijk en emotioneel te ervaren.

“For me, collecting online images is a way of tracing how meaning shifts over time.”

In ‘A Life of Its Own: American Psycho,’ Slovenian artist Sara Bezovšek explores how imagery from the cult film American Psycho takes on a life of its own on the internet. By collecting memes, screenshots, user-generated videos, and other found online content, she reveals how online communities continuously assign new meanings to familiar images.

Online, scenes from American Psycho are used to both celebrate and criticise themes such as masculinity and late capitalism. Bezovšek shows how memes fuse humour, politics and ideology and shape our present and future. Today, that shift is visible in online figures such as Clavicular, who is frequently compared to Patrick Bateman. A character originally created as a satire of late capitalism and toxic masculinity has, in some online communities, become an aspirational figure instead.

Bezovšek lives and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where her practice spans new media, internet art, experimental film and graphic design.

Volkskrant Kunstwerk van de week: ‘A Tent for Everything’ van Samaa Abu Allaban.

De collageserie van de beeldend kunstenaar uit Gaza, woonachtig in Parijs, wordt deze week uitgelicht. Lees het hele artikel in de Volkskrant van 7 juli.
