How can one preserve an artwork that combines various, in some cases outdated, technologies, is human life sized and operates with electronics? Over the past two years, this question has been addressed by several experts on the occasion of the restoration of the work Earth, Moon, Sun (1990) by Nam June Paik (1932–2006).

On Sunday, 18. October, we invite you at 6pm to Ludwig Forum to discuss such (and similar) questions on the occasion of the European Day of Restoration. To start the evening, Director Rebekka Seubert and the restorers Christian and Florian Draheim will speak about the work Earth, Moon, Sun its restoration – which took place from July 2024 to March 2026 as part of an open restoration laboratory – and the particular challenges that such work entails.

Following the discussion, we will present Amanda Kim´s documentary Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV from 2023, which explores Paik´s life and work through archival materials, texts, and encounters with his companions.

From 17 October through 28 November 2026, Greylight Projects presents Perceiving in the Dark, an exhibition curated by guest curator Annosh Urbanke, featuring work by Timo Demollin and Reinier Vrancken. The exhibition explores what is not immediately visible and how the absent makes itself known in other ways and in other places.

Darkness is a reality that reveals itself to us only partially. The works in Perceiving in the Dark touch upon elements that are present and absent in the landscape and in corporeality. They address what remains excluded, yet manifests itself precisely in other forms or in other places.

As part of the exhibition, the film While the Pile of Rubble Grows Towards the Sky (2023) by Kristina Benjocki and Stijn Verhoeff will be screened on 1 November. The film takes the viewer through the underground tunnels of Cannerberg, where different layers of history converge.

As part of the international research and outreach project *Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW*, initiated by the Anna Polke Foundation, the artist Berit Schneidereit (born 1988, lives and works in Düsseldorf) has developed a site-specific exhibition project for the Kunsthaus NRW, which was realised over a period of half a year in two interlinked parts.

Taking expanded photography as her starting point – as a fluid, process-oriented and material-based artistic practice – Schneidereit explores the photographic medium as an expression of a continuum of time and space. Key points of reference here are Sigmar Polke’s ‘Dürer Loops’, which formed part of his iconic ‘Athanor’ installation in the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1986, as well as his experimental photographic works featuring plant tendrils from the same period.

Exhibition: Eglė Budvytytė & Espace Aygo, “A womb of things to be and a tomb of things that were”

Step inside the studios of Jester’s current residents. Maurizio Segato, Anima Goyal and Ran De Vos will open their workspaces and share a glimpse of their ongoing research, experiments and works in progress. It’s a chance to encounter their practices as they take shape and to meet the artists.

The open studios take place alongside the opening of A Womb of Things to Be and a Tomb of Things That Were.

The exhibition presents a dialogue between the work of the Amsterdam- and Vilnius-based visual artist Eglė Budvytytė and the Brussels-based artist and designer collective Espace Aygo.

What do the traces left behind by people centuries ago tell us about the Limburg marl quarries? For MODULE #6, visual artist Massoud Sakhi (Kabul, 1991) delved into the drawings, inscriptions and other traces found there.

Massoud is a visual artist from Heerlen who explores South Limburg, both literally and figuratively: the region where he grew up. On intensive journeys, he explores the marl quarries, forests and hills, connecting him to centuries-old legends and traditions.

De mens is geen vogel (Man is no bird) is the first Belgian solo exhibition by the internationally renowned artist Raphaela Vogel (b. 1988, Nuremberg, DE). With deadpan humor, Vogel channels the anarchic spirit of punk rock into theatrical, all-encompassing installations which blend personal experience, social themes, and emergent technology. At Z33, visitors journey through monumental installations, sculpture, paintings and a new multimedia artwork created specifically for this exhibition.

🪩 The opening evening will explore the many facets of female power: from the rebellious and confrontational to the vulnerable and personal. This tension is also central to the work of Raphaela Vogel, in which opposites constantly collide. Her monumental installations combine image, sound, and technology to create complex worlds that examine power, identity, and physicality.

In keeping with the exhibition’s theme, we’re inviting HER Collective, a FLINTA*-led collective with roots in Hasselt. Expect a musical evening where powerful beats, hypnotic melodies, and surprising performances come together.

In her work, Maya Schweizer (*1976 in Paris) explores questions of history, temporality, and the instability of both individual and collective memory. She focuses in particular on the fragmentary, the incidental, and the gesture as a form of nonverbal expression. In the exhibition “Uedra,” the artist translates the collage-like quality of her associatively dense video works—which are interwoven with cinematic references—into an atmospheric spatial installation and presents complementary embroidered textile works. The title, a rearrangement of the letters of the German word “Dauer” (duration), refers to an imaginary place where time becomes a metaphorical space—one that nevertheless remains fleeting and intangible, like the images of cinema.

With Re-Play, East Belgian photographer Christian Roosen presents a photographic series that explores childhood memories and their significance for adult identity.

Developed over many years, the project places people from a wide range of social and professional backgrounds in an unexpected situation: at their workplace, they take off their shoes, sit down on the floor and engage with a toy from their own childhood. What initially appears to be a simple act of play becomes, in his photographs, a deliberate interruption of professional and social conventions.

The familiar toys function as personal objects of memory. They open up a space between past and present, between the public role of an adult and the private memory of an earlier stage of life. In the photographic staging, these different identities meet and become visible simultaneously.

Re-Play is less concerned with an idealised notion of childhood than with the emotional power that memories of this period can retain into adulthood. The photographs reveal how closely personal history, objects and identity are intertwined. At the same time, they create a moment of disorientation: people we know through their professional roles suddenly appear in an unfamiliar, playful and more vulnerable position.

On Tuesday 29 September, we will host artists’ talks with our current artists-in-residence Maryna Shtanko, Bas Ketelaars and Elli Ott. They will talk about their work, their methods and their plans for their time in Heerlen.

_ Hunting in the Dark

This autumn, Greylight Projects’ programme unfolds around a theme that connects its different projects and practices: looking into the dark. Looking into the unknown, into what cannot be known directly or with certainty. Something that today seems increasingly difficult to allow for.

We look around us. Not only at what is visible and immediately at hand, but also at what remains hidden from view. We look down and up, at what lies beneath our feet and what takes place above us. We look back into the past and forward towards a future that has yet to reveal itself.
