Joy Ride: Alessandro Cugola in dialogue with the Jester archive

Jester presents Joy Ride by Alessandro Cugola from June 20th to August 23rd. Developed at Jester, in dialogue with the institution’s archive, the exhibition reactivates fifty years of artistic production. Through site-specific installations and a durational performance, Cugola triggers a chain reaction in which the archive is moved, exposed, contaminated, conserved and eventually packed away again. The archive enters a temporary traffic system, a joy ride.

With this exhibition, Jester celebrates its fifth anniversary, alongside the fortieth anniversary of FLACC and fiftieth anniversary of CIAP, the organizations that came together to form Jester.

Museum Het Nieuwe Domein is located right in the heart of the city and, of course, at the Sint Rosa Festival. Inside a small tent, you’ll find art on a grand scale. Be amazed by the video art installation *Performing the Scenography* by the artist duo Aggtelek (Xandro Vallès and Gema Perales) and get involved yourself in creating a living set that turns everything upside down.

What happens when a set doesn’t stay static but is constantly changing? During Sint Rosa, artists Robin Puyk and Famke Storms invite you to help build a living set together.

Inspired by the work of Aggtelek, they explore how anyone can be a creator. Cardboard takes centre stage: a simple material that can be found anywhere, is available for free or at low cost, and is easy to work with. A structure or extension of your body can be created in no time, instantly bringing a different atmosphere to the space.

GUIDED TOUR ↝IKOB - Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst
Artist-guided tour with Céline Vahsen

On Wednesday, august 26th at 6 pm, visitors will have the opportunity to join a guided tour of the current exhibition SHIFTINGS with Céline Vahsen and our curatorial assistant Larissa Jochims.

The artist Céline Vahsen uses textile techniques to create pictorial compositions that are rooted in the materiality of her medium. She stretches woven canvases, dyed with natural coloring, onto a square format, which transforms them into vibrating, expressive works. Her pieces emphasise the autonomy of the textile medium, which plays a central role in her practice. In 2022, she won the regional prize of the Feminist Art Prize organized by IKOB.

In this exhibition, we present a rich selection from the Sittard-Geleen municipal collection of heritage and contemporary art. The works, drawn from a variety of periods and collections, reflect the times in which they were created and acquired. Artists such as Rineke Dijkstra, Tomàš Libertíny, Os Gemeos and Ulay/Marina Abramović each reflect, in their own way, on themes such as identity, memory and a changing society. Much of the collection remains surprisingly relevant today. Thanks to astute acquisitions at local, national and international levels, the collection possesses a strong artistic and social impact, which is also recognised beyond the country’s borders. The collection acts as a mirror of the city, the region and the world — connecting local stories with global perspectives. It shows how we view the past and art today.

Centaur – Guided tour with Esther Boehle

Esther Boehle gives an introduction to the film installation she has curated, *Centaur – Man and Horse*.

Whilst equestrian sport is being celebrated this summer with the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, the Ludwig Forum is presenting a film installation on a related theme. Entitled *Centaur* (German: *Kentaur* / *Zentaur*), a hybrid creature from Greek mythology combining a horse and a human, the exhibition features two short films shown on a large projection screen in the museum’s central exhibition hall, each exploring the theme of humans and horses in very different ways: *Centaur* (2020) by the German-Iranian artist and filmmaker Yalda Afsah (b. 1983) and *Horses Across the Meadow* (2014) by the Swiss artist duo Marianne Halter (b. 1970) and Mario Marchisella (b. 1972)

Christina Kubisch: Electrical Walks Aachen

Since 2003, Christina Kubisch has been researching and mapping the electromagnetic fields of cities and, through her ‘Electrical Walks’, making them audible using specially designed induction headphones: Lighting systems, transformers, electronic anti-theft devices, CCTV cameras, wireless internet access points, high-voltage power lines, mobile phones, computers, cash machines, antennas, neon signs, navigation systems, etc. form a network of electric fields which, though invisible as if hidden beneath a cloak of invisibility, nevertheless have an incredible presence.

For her exhibition *The Emergence of Sound* at the Ludwig Forum (24 May–20 September 2026), Christina Kubisch has devised a new version of these electromagnetic walks. On Saturday 1 August and Saturday 15 August, we are offering a guided *Electrical Walk* through the city centre at 10h on each day. The walk starts at the Ludwig Forum and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Cost: €5.

MAPAWAY 2026 - BERGEN

What does a mountain signify within landscapes increasingly shaped by human intervention? And what does it mean to store, preserve, conceal - to BERG/en? Can a mountain itself be BERG/ed?

From 14–23 August, the border region between Vaals (NL) and Eupen (BE) once again becomes the site of MAPAWAY, an international programme exploring artistic cartography as a mode of research and spatial inquiry. This year’s edition takes BERGEN as its central theme, embracing both the noun (mountains) and the Dutch verb (to store, preserve, salvage or conceal).

Over the course of ten days, Berghut Halverwege on the Vaalserberg, in close collaboration with IKOB – Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Eupen) and DAV (Aachen), serves as the main base for a programme that brings together artists, researchers, geographers, cartographers and walkers. Rather than a conventional festival, MAPAWAY operates as a temporary research environment where knowledge is produced through participation, encounter and movement.

Visitors are invited to actively participate through ongoing DIY sessions focused on map repair and digitisation, experimental exercises such as Extracting from Mountains, collective walks between IKOB and Berghut Halverwege, workshops, shared plant-based meals and an evening film programme.

📅 On 14 August, a guided tour through the exhibitions at IKOB will be followed by a hike to Berghut Halverwege – a 22 km trail accompanied by a specially designed map, three stops along the way, and artistic reflections.

Before our eyes

The act of looking is never neutral. What we choose to see, and what we avert our eyes from, says something about us. The exhibition Before Our Eyes explores how ten (inter)national artists question and navigate this responsibility. Their work responds to the political events of our time, with particular attention to the genocidal violence in Palestine, through images that take a stand or call for reflection. For how can artists address the violence? Not by simply showing it again, but by carefully choosing what to make visible—and what to withhold.

With works by:
Marianne Berenhaut, Ryan Cullen, Marlene Dumas, Hamishi Farah, Sirah Foighel Brutmann & Eitan Efrat, Rabih Mroué, Rosalind Nashashibi, Mohammed Sami, Luc Tuymans en Angharad Williams.
