Every year on the Thursday closest to November 17th (liberation day of the Leudal area) the International Commemoration at the Monument of Tolerance in the Leudal (Haelen-Limburg) takes place. The Monument of Tolerance, which was unveiled on March 8th 2001, remembers the battle which took place in and above the Leudal area, during wh

ich more then 687 military of 11 nationalities lost their lives in the service of their Fatherland and far away from home.This we cannot and may not forget and
by organizing an annual commemorative service we can keep reminding the next generations that many have given their lives for our freedom. As a sign of true tolerance Allied as well as German and Austrian victims are remembered together. Therefore the highlight of the commemoration every year is the joint laying of a wreath by a German, an English and a Dutch
veteran. This propagating of tolerance is very much brought under the attention of the young generation by offering a series of lessons about tolerance to schools for further education (secondary modern and grammar schools) in the Leudal. In these lessons the pupils discover the value of tolerance in a very independent way. Thus the significance of the monument and especially of the commemorative service reaches far beyond the present and in this way has its influence on the future. What is more important in this day and age than propagating the fact that tolerance is important and especially very well possible. In this way history really becomes the tutor of life! Among others the commemorative service is attended by veterans from the Netherlands and abroad and also by various national and international dignitaries. Every year the list of dignitaries grows more impressive and the committee receives ever more reactions how important others think this commemoration is. As Sir Winston Churchill once said: A nation that forgets its past has no future.

Op zondag 24 mei 2026 waren wij aanwezig bij de sfeervolle viering van Memorial Day op het Amerikaanse kerkhof in Margraten.
De indrukwekkende service vond plaats onder een blauwe hemel en de zon scheen volop. Gelukkig was er af en toe een licht briesje voelbaar waardoor de warmte draaglijk was.

Naast de diverse hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, waaronder de Ambassadeur van de USA in Nederland Joseph Popolo en minister van Defensie Dilan Yeșilgöz, waren ook de Amerikaanse WO II veteranen Harry Humason en Arnold Strauch aanwezig die we eerder deze week bij ons monument hadden mogen verwelkomen.

In de diverse speeches werd gerefereerd aan enkele persoonlijke verhalen van begraven militairen en aan hun verbintenis met adoptanten van de graven. Met een indrukwekkende flypast werd de bijeenkomst afgesloten.

Op 18 mei 2026 hadden wij de eer om een Amerikaanse WOII-veteraan te mogen verwelkomen bij ons Monument of Tolerance.

De Amerikaans-Nederlandse stichting Mission Margraten Plus organiseerde voor de zesde keer op rij deze bijzondere reis. Het doel hiervan is om Amerikaanse veteranen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog samen met Nederlandse burgers de gevallen soldaten te laten herdenken — onder andere op de Amerikaanse Begraafplaats in Margraten — én om Nederlandse, Europese en Amerikaanse leerlingen en studenten in contact te brengen met deze veteranen, zodat de verhalen over de oorlog en de impact ervan levend blijven (info van website Mission Margraten Plus).

Voor de vijfde keer begon het verblijf in Nederland bij ons monument, en dat beschouwen wij als een enorme eer.

Dit jaar mochten wij Harry Humason verwelkomen. Deze indrukwekkende en nog altijd kwieke 100-jarige veteraan wist ons diep te raken met zijn verhalen en levenswijsheid. Zijn ervaringen hebben geleid tot een krachtige levensboodschap:
“In war nobody wins – everyone loses.”

Een boodschap die naadloos aansluit bij waar ons Monument of Tolerance voor staat: verdraagzaamheid, menselijkheid en het belang van vrede.

Wij wensen Harry, Steve en alle bestuursleden van Mission Margraten Plus nog een prachtige tijd samen toe. Dank jullie wel dat jullie opnieuw bij ons zijn geweest.

On May 18, 2026, we had the honor of welcoming an American WWII veteran to our Monument of Tolerance.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Dutch-American foundation Mission Margraten Plus organized this special journey. Its purpose is to give American World War II veterans the opportunity to commemorate the fallen soldiers together with Dutch citizens — including at the American Cemetery in Margraten — and to connect Dutch, European, and American pupils and students with these veterans, ensuring that the stories of the war and its impact continue to live on (information from the Mission Margraten Plus website).

For the fifth time, the stay in the Netherlands began at our monument, something we consider a tremendous honor.
This year, we had the privilege of welcoming Harry Humason. This remarkable and still energetic 100-year-old veteran deeply moved us with his stories and wisdom. His experiences led him to a powerful life motto:
“In war nobody wins – everyone loses.”

A message that perfectly reflects what our Monument of Tolerance stands for: tolerance, humanity, and the importance of peace.

We wish Harry, Steve, and all board members of Mission Margraten Plus a wonderful time together. Thank you once again for visiting us.

We ontvingen het verdrietige bericht dat op 28 april 2026, op de indrukwekkende leeftijd van 103 jaar, onze goede vriend de Britse veteraan George Dunn DFC is overleden.

Als piloot bij RAF Bomber Command voerde Flight Lieutenant George Dunn tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog maar liefst 44 missies uit, vliegend met zowel de Halifax als de Mosquito bij verschillende squadrons. Wij beschouwen het als een groot voorrecht dat George meerdere keren onze gast is geweest en dat wij deze warme, bijzondere man hebben mogen leren kennen. Zijn verhalen maakten diepe indruk en vormen een blijvende bron van inspiratie voor ons allen.

Wij wensen zijn familie en vrienden veel kracht en troost toe bij dit grote verlies. Zijn herinnering zal in onze harten voortleven — wij zullen hem nooit vergeten.

We received the sad news that on 28 April 2026, at the remarkable age of 103, our dear friend British veteran George Dunn DFC passed away.

As a pilot with RAF Bomber Command, Flight Lieutenant George Dunn flew no fewer than 44 missions during the Second World War, operating both the Halifax and the Mosquito with various squadrons. We consider it a great privilege that George was our guest for several years, allowing us to get to know this warm and remarkable man. His stories left a profound impression and are a lasting source of inspiration to us all.

We wish his family and friends much strength and comfort during this difficult time. His memory will live on in our hearts — we will never forget him.

ANZAC Day 2026

In the morning, we paid our respects to all the ANZACs in The Hague at the national service.

It was a beautiful and moving service, with several contributions, including a very poignant speech by the Australian Ambassador, H.E. Mr Greg French, and beautiful, emotional songs by Emma Brown.

For our tomorrow, they gave their today.
