Giò Pomodoro (1930–2002) was a leading Italian sculptor, printmaker, and designer whose work bridged abstraction, architecture, and symbolism. Born in Orciano di Pesaro, he developed an early interest in structure and form before settling in Milan in the 1950s, where he became part of Italy’s avant-garde art scene. His practice evolved from experimental reliefs and tension-based surfaces into monumental public sculptures in stone, marble, and bronze. Central themes in his work include the sun, cosmic order, geometry, and collective space. Pomodoro exhibited internationally at major institutions and biennials, creating enduring public works that redefine sculpture as a dialogue between art, nature, science, and civic life.

Out now! The thirteenth volume in the monograph series of the of is dedicated to the renowned Dutch sculptor (1924–2013). This collected work contains an extensive account of her life and sculptural practice, an article on her drawing work, and an interview in which she speaks in her own voice. Finally, it includes a complete catalogue raisonné of all her sculptures. The book is available at museum Beelden aan Zee, where a retrospective exhibition of Van der Pant’s work can also be seen until 3 May 2026. Several works from our former collection are on loan.

A subject within Van der Pant’s abstracting birds theme was "Icarus". Icarus is a figure from Greek mythology who was imprisoned on Crete together with his father Daedalus. To escape, Daedalus built wings made of a wooden framework, covered with feathers and held together with wax. Because the wax could melt, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too high and too close to the sun. In his enthusiasm, however, Icarus did so anyway and fell into the Aegean Sea.
