MICK LA ROCK ON HIP HOP 🎤

In this video, artist Mick La Rock reflects on more than four decades of hip hop. Growing up in Groningen, she embraced the culture from its earliest days in the early 1980s, expressing herself through graffiti, rap and everything hip hop had to offer. Although hip hop has long been seen as a male-dominated culture, she never let that hold her back and went on to become one of the first female graffiti artists in Europe.

For Mick, hip hop has always been about growth and reinvention. She is inspired by the way each new generation brings its own perspective to the culture, ensuring that hip hop continues to evolve.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND 'BAKSTAIN' 🧱

In this video, Edgar Pelupessy, Junior Curator of Groningen Cultural History, introduces three key figures in Groningen's brick history: architect Cornelis Peters, who designed the former Groninger Museum and wrote extensively about brick; urban planner Jan Anthony Mulock Houwer, who helped shape the expansion of the city; and architect Siebe Jan Bouma, whose work gave brick a renewed place in architecture throughout the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

For centuries, bricks formed from Groningen clay and fired to warm reds and oranges have defined the look of the city and province. 'Bakstain' presents the cultural history of these iconic bricks and reveals how they are much more than just a building material.

JOB HANSEN BY JAN ALTINK 🖼️

In our exhibition 'Nieuw licht – De Ploeg', you can discover 'Job Hansen' by Jan Altink. Painted on a warm summer day in 1927, the portrait captures fellow De Ploeg artist Job Hansen squinting into the sun with his pipe firmly between his teeth. The work was painted at Blauwborgje, a favourite spot where the De Ploeg artists returned time and again after first visiting it with their Minerva teacher Bach.

'Nieuw licht' displays not only highlights from the collection, but also art and design that has rarely been shown to the public before. This exhibition accentuates the surprising versatility of the artists in the period 1918–1930.

EXPERIENCE 'CORRIDORS OF MEMORY' 🥽

In this video, artist Gus Drake explains how 'Corridors of Memory' brings memories to life through virtual reality. Using LiDAR scans, 3D animations and immersive sound recordings, he recreates the atmosphere of homes in Overschild, inviting visitors to experience them as living archives of memory rather than simply buildings of brick and mortar.

The work also draws inspiration from the geology beneath Groningen. Together with a geologist, Drake translated the migration of gas, land subsidence and earthquakes into a score of piano notes, connecting the invisible forces below the surface to the stories held within the homes above.

MEET THE ARTIST: MICK LA ROCK 🎨

In this video, graffiti artist Mick La Rock introduces her work 'Hanging Installation with Turquoise Accents Part II', on view in the exhibition 'Hip Hop Is'. After more than four decades of creating graffiti, from the streets of Groningen and Amsterdam to New York, she now increasingly brings her work into museums. Inspired by graffiti, she explores how a two-dimensional creation can be translated into a three-dimensional installation by layering suspended elements, creating depth and movement within the space.

THE STORY BEHIND 'CORRIDORS OF MEMORY' 🏚️

In this video, artist Gus Drake shares the story behind Corridors of Memory, created for the exhibition 'Bakstain'. His work is rooted in years of collaboration with residents of Overschild, a village deeply affected by earthquakes caused by gas extraction. Through their stories, he explores what it means to lose not only a house, but also the memories and sense of home it contains.

Corridors of Memory reflects on the impact of gas extraction beyond physical damage. As homes disappear, so do the spaces where everyday life unfolds. The work invites visitors to consider what can be rebuilt, and what can never be replaced.

INSIDE 'RARITEITENKABINET' 🎧

In this video, artist Ferry van Zijderveld introduces his installation 'Rariteitenkabinet', which shares its title with Duvel's latest album. Each work in the installation is paired with one of the album's tracks. Ferry also reflects on his performance in which he created one thousand works in a single session, a meditative process that reaffirmed his belief that repetition is the only way to delve deeper into something and truly claim it as your own.

For Ferry, 'Hip Hop Is' is about questioning what hip hop can be. He hopes the exhibition challenges familiar clichés and shows that hip hop is constantly evolving through new ideas, perspectives and forms of expression.

INTRODUCING THE WALKING MUSEUM 🚶‍♂️

In 1986, former Groninger Museum director Frans Haks imagined a museum that could move through the landscape. In his diary he wrote: “What if there were a Walking Museum that settles by the water in summer and, when the ice is thick enough, walks across the frozen water in winter?”

This summer, that vision comes to life. Inspired by the artists of De Ploeg, who often worked outdoors, the Walking Museum extends beyond the museum walls into the city and the Groningen landscape. From 16 August to 16 September, visitors to the Groninger Museum receive a free Walking Museum map, guiding them to art, architecture and heritage throughout the province of Groningen, including Wall House #2, the city markers, the Tschumi Pavilion and Soundings – Sense of Place.

Visit the museum, pick up your map, and enjoy exploring Groningen beyond our walls while the summer lasts.
