Pulse Uprising

Through the interplay of text, sound art, and moving image, Pulse Uprising forms a sensory loop that explores alienation, vulnerability, power, courage, and fear—drawing attention to the systems that shape,
control, and often silence our lives. The work traces pathways of willfulness—a force that mobilizes bodies governed by oppressive administrative machines to pulse against the orderly and the imposed. It questions whether movements toward freedom can persist beyond the moment, or whether they are always at risk of being absorbed into the very systems they resist.

Pulse Uprising is on show at MU until June 28.

Graphene and Kevlar are two of the strongest materials
in the world. It is therefore no surprise that these remarkable materials, with their exceptional properties, lend their names to an exhibition about the strength and resilience of the transgender community.

Where graphene is found in nature and is literally unbreakable, Kevlar is a synthetic material. With this in mind, artist Julius Thissen turns Kevlar into a metaphor for the technological possibilities available for trans people today, including those that make it possible to undergo medical transition.

In Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar, Julius Thissen creates futuristic transgender figures that embody the ancestral power of q***r predecessors and counterbalance the dangers of our time. Within these images, Thissen captures the tensions and threats faced by transgender people, then translates them into forms that contribute to an empowering transformation.

Together with Julius himself, you will explore the exhibition space and come face to face with its inhabitants; the armoured Anthros, the tender and playful Hybrids and the intimidating Beast, and discover
the many stories, visions, and futures they embody.

How do you stand up against a regime that oppresses you not just once, but over and over and over again?

Pulse Uprising is a poignant multimedia installation by visual artists Vida Kashani, Amir Komelizadeh, and Siavash Yazdanmehr. Rooted in the Iranian context, and the contemporary social movements that emerged in the face of restrictive mandates and oppressive measures, the work makes visible the complex dynamics of control, resistance, and transformation. But its message resonates beyond a specific geo-political context, revealing the pulsating rhythms of dissent that echo on a global scale.

Artist Julius Thissen ( ) will take us along the making of Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar, sharing the references and choices behind his inspiring sci-fi solo exhibition that is currently on view at MU.

Simon(e) van Saarloos ( ) will introduce strands from their upcoming book Trans Despair, which circles around surgical tables and waiting rooms, and
explores where these ideas intersect with the world and characters Thissen has built.

Together, they will then enter a conversation on trans strategies of resistance in fascist times, approaching transition as something that never quite begins or ends. Together, they explore an infinite q***rness that should not remain confined to representation, but must break free from the burden of defence.

With Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar, artist Julius Thissen has been commissioned by MU Hybrid Art House to write the second chapter of Watch It Collapse, his long-term research into transgender and q***r
visibility within an increasingly hostile political climate.

Where anti-trans rhetoric portrays the community as anti-evolutionary and monstrous, Thissen appropriates this very image. He turns the attack into a shield: a simple yet effective form of protection. Thus, Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar navigates between strength and vulnerability, hardening and softness—a space in which there is not only a response, but new forms of existence are also imagined.

Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar by Julius Thissen ().

Last Friday we opened the exhibition with a great turnout. Thank you to everyone who joined.

In a time characterised by fearmongering, violence, media manipulation and the banning of gender-affirming healthcare, Thissen believes it is vital to develop strategies to remain safe and resilient, without losing the ability to remain gentle and true to who you are. Wonder, fantasy and imagination are his tools for visualising a future.

Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar is the second chapter of Watch it Collapse, a five-year research into transgender and q***r visibility in relation to the dystopian political climate of our time.

On view at MU until 21 June.
