Hedendaagse beeldende kunst 38CC is een Delftse expositieruimte voor kwalitatief hoogstaande hedendaagse beeldende kunst maar altijd met een link naar Delft.

Sinds 2024 werken aan een nieuwe richting binnen hun oeuvre. Waar ze eerder hun ideeën uitwerkten in ruimtelijke installaties, maken ze nu op zichzelf staande sculpturen waarin beeld en verhaal samenkomen. Op kleurrijke vaasvormen ontvouwen zich visuele vertellingen waarin feit en fictie in elkaar overlopen: een sprookjesfiguur kan naast een historische componist staan, een berkenboom kan blijdschap voelen of de hemel dragen.

De kunstenaars hebben zich laten inspireren door amforen, vazen uit de Griekse en Romeinse oudheid waarop scènes uit mythologie en het dagelijks leven werden afgebeeld. Door de ronde vaasvorm vloeien de getekende scènes in elkaar over, waardoor de verhalen zich als een doorlopend verhaal ontvouwen, zonder duidelijk begin of einde. Ook de materiaalkeuze is verassend en zet de kijker op het verkeerde been: de “vazen” zijn gemaakt van papier-maché in plaats van keramiek.

Since 2024, have been working in a new direction within their oeuvre. Whereas they previously developed their ideas in spatial installations, they now create autonomous sculptures in which image and narrative come together. On colorful, vase-like forms, visual stories unfold in which fact and fiction merge: a fairy-tale figure may stand beside a historical composer, a birch tree may feel joy or carry the sky.

The artists drew inspiration from amphorae—vessels from ancient Greek and Roman times that depicted scenes from mythology and everyday life. The rounded shape of the vases allows the drawn scenes to flow into one another, so the stories unfold as a continuous narrative, without a clear beginning or end. The choice of materials is also surprising and playfully misleading: the “vases” are made of papier-mâché rather than ceramic.

De basis van het werk van wordt gevormd door tekeningen. Tekenen is voor hen een manier om ideeën te ontwikkelen, verhalen te verkennen en grip te krijgen op de werkelijkheid.
De lijnen zijn vaak eenvoudig en direct, uitgevoerd in potlood of balpen, soms aangevuld met subtiele kleuraccenten. In de ogenschijnlijke eenvoud schuilt een grote technische beheersing, geworteld in hun klassieke kunstopleiding in Sint-Petersburg.

Tot en met 5 juli zijn de ruim 200 tekeningen te zien in 38CC.

The foundation of work is drawing. For them, drawing is a way to develop ideas, explore stories, and gain a sense of control over reality.
The lines are often simple and direct, executed in pencil or ballpoint pen, sometimes complemented by subtle accents of color. Within this apparent simplicity lies a high level of technical mastery, rooted in their classical art education in Saint Petersburg.

More than 200 drawings will be on display until July 5!

Set the stage -

Sinds 2024 werken Marta Volkova & Slava Shevelenko aan een nieuwe serie sculpturen, die nu te zien zijn in 38CC. Op kleurrijke vaasvormen ontvouwen zich visuele vertellingen waarin feit en fictie in elkaar overlopen: een sprookjesfiguur kan naast een historische componist staan, een berkenboom kan blijdschap voelen of de hemel dragen. De ogenschijnlijk losse elementen gaan met elkaar in dialoog en vormen samen een poëtisch universum waarin cultuur, natuur, en geschiedenis met elkaar verweven raken.

Since 2024, Marta Volkova & Slava Shevelenko have been working on a new series of sculptures, now on view at 38CC. Nu te zien: Set the stage

Een selectie van nooit eerder vertoonde tekeningen van ontvouwt zich nu op de wanden van de tentoonstellingsruimte. Tekenen is voor hen een manier om ideeën te ontwikkelen, verhalen te verkennen en grip te krijgen op de werkelijkheid.
Tijdens de coronapandemie kreeg het tekenen een nog centralere rol, met name voor Marta. Gedurende twee jaar maakte zij elke dag minstens één tekening. Deze routine resulteerde in een omvangrijke reeks werken waarvan er ruim 200 te zien zijn bij 38CC.

Kom t/m 5 juli de tekening en sculpturen bewonderen.

Now on view: Set the Stage

A selection of never-before-exhibited drawings by is now unfolding on the walls of the exhibition space. For them, drawing is a way to develop ideas, explore stories, and gain a grip on reality.
During the coronavirus pandemic, drawing took on an even more central role, particularly for Marta. For two years, she created at least one drawing every day. This routine resulted in an extensive body of work, of which more than 200 pieces are currently on display at 38CC.

Come and admire the drawings and sculptures until July 5th.

Wij zijn volop bezig met de voorbereidingen en hopen jullie aankomende zaterdag om 16:00 te verwelkomen.

Het kunstenaarsduo keert na ruim tien jaar terug bij 38CC met de tentoonstelling ‘Set the stage’

Hun werk onderzoekt hoe samenlevingen mythes creëren en hoe officiële geschiedenis en persoonlijke
herinneringen daarin door elkaar lopen. Set the stage biedt een inkijk in hun denkwereld,
waar verbeelding, ironie en absurditeit samenkomen.

Miss Roodkapje, Dmitri Shostakovich, een stoel onder hypnose en een vrolijke berkenboom
zijn enkele van de vele personages die worden opgevoerd door Marta Volkova & Slava Shevelenko in hun tentoonstelling Set the stage.

Ruim tien jaar na hun installatie From the life of the beetles keert het kunstenaarsduo
terug bij 38CC. Centraal in de nieuwe tentoonstelling staat een recente
serie verhalende sculpturen, aangevuld met een selectie nooit eerder getoonde
schetsen uit hun rijke archief.

Little Red Riding Hood, Dmitri Shostakovich, a chair under hypnosis, and a cheerful birch tree
are just some of the many characters brought to life by Marta Volkova & Slava Shevelenko in their exhibition Set the Stage.

More than ten years after their installation From the Life of the Beetles, the artist duo
returns to 38CC. At the heart of the new exhibition is a recent
series of narrative sculptures, complemented by a selection of previously unseen
sketches from their archive.

Laatste kans: ‘soft machine’ is nog tot en met aanstaande zondag 29 maart te bezoeken in 38CC.

Kom kijken naar de tentoonstelling die uitnodigt om na te denken over technologie, empathie en onze eigen kwetsbaarheid. Waar houdt de mens op en waar begint de machine?

Met mechanische sculpturen, analoge tekeningen en foto- en videoportretten wordt zichtbaar hoe sterk we onze gevoelens projecteren op technologie die steeds meer op ons lijkt.

Afgelopen zaterdag opende de tentoonstelling ‘Ode aan een dier’ bij 38CC. Een feestelijke en drukbezochte middag met niet alleen veel trotse mensen, maar ook andere dieren waaronder honden en zelfs een papegaai 🦜 !

Kunstenaar en medecurator van de tentoonstelling gaf een mooie voordracht over de motivatie voor het maken van deze collectieve ode: “De uitnodiging voor het maken van een werk in deze tentoonstelling was in eerste instantie om te kijken en te luisteren naar de andere dieren waarmee wij onze omgeving delen. De dieren waarmee wij een bijzondere band hebben, of degene we juist liever niet zien. […] Het doel van de tentoonstelling is om niet alleen dankbaarheid en verbondenheid tonen, maar ook een oproep tot actie. Door niet langer over dieren te denken als objecten, maar als de individuen die ze zijn, kunnen we onze verantwoordelijkheid erkennen in een gedeelde wereld en de dominante positie van de mens heroverwegen.”

‘Ode aan een dier’ is nog tot en met 12 oktober te bezoeken ik 38CC.

Last Saturday, the exhibition ‘Ode to an Animal’ opened at 38CC. It was a festive and busy afternoon with not only many proud people, but also other animals, including dogs and even a parrot 🦜!

Artist and co-curator of the exhibition gave a beautiful talk about the motivation behind creating this collective ode: “The invitation to create a work for this exhibition was, first of all, an invitation to look and listen to the other animals with whom we share our surroundings. The animals with whom we have a special bond, or those we would rather not see. […] The goal of the exhibition is not only to show gratitude and connection, but also to call for action. By no longer thinking of animals as objects, but as the individuals they are, we can acknowledge our responsibility in a shared world and reconsider humanity’s dominant position.”

‘Ode to an Animal’ can be visited at 38CC until October 12.
