Dish of the week - Ulocladium alternariae

Have you spotted the wall of 300+ petri dishes in ARTIS-Micropia? One of them holds this one:

👭 Ulocladium alternariae closely resembles species from the genus Alternaria and is often mistaken for it due to its similar dark, soot-like spores.

🗺️This fungus is found worldwide, particularly in temperate and subtropical regions. It thrives wherever decaying leaves and plant material are present.

🍂 Its presence tends to increase in autumn, when fallen leaves provide plenty of nutrients. So when you’re raking leaves, you may also be releasing some Ulocladium spores into the air.

A leaf may seem tiny at just 5 centimetres across, but to a microbe, it’s an entire world.

Many microbes are only a few micrometres in size. Line up thousands of them, and they would barely span the width of that leaf.

The smallest life forms are all around you, shaping ecosystems, recycling nutrients, and even helping you stay healthy, yet most remain invisible to the naked eye.

Sharp needles at microscopic level 🔬

A tardigrade’s menu is microscopic, but the mechanics are anything but simple. Using tiny piercing ‘mouthparts’, these resilient micro-animals feed on algae, plant cells, and other organic material hidden in thin films of water. One puncture, one suction, one meal at a time.

In this video: zoomed in on the slow, deliberate art of microscopic eating: where every movement matters, and every droplet is an ecosystem.

At a scale so small, you can only see it with a microscope.

Come visit ARTIS-Micropia and see the tardigrades up close.

Dish of the week - Penicillium italicum

Have you spotted the wall of 300+ petri dishes in ARTIS-Micropia? One of them holds this one:

🩵 This fungus produces striking blue-green spores, created by natural pigments that become especially visible under the microscope.

🍊P. italicum is often associated with citrus fruits, where it frequently appears on the peel of oranges and lemons.

☁️Its microscopic spores travel easily through the air. When they settle in the right environment, new fungal growth can begin.

🛏️ Dish of the week — Mattress Microbiome

Your mattress may look clean, but under the surface lives an entire microscopic world. Heat, sweat, and skin particles create the perfect environment for tiny organisms to settle in.

Meet some of the residents:

🦠 Skin bacteria — Constantly transferred from our bodies to sheets and fabrics.

🍄 Fungi — Microscopic molds that prefer warm, slightly humid conditions.

🕷️ Dust mites — Tiny creatures feeding on dead skin cells hidden in bedding.

Together, these invisible organisms form a miniature ecosystem that sleeps beside you every night.

What lives beneath your feet? 🦶

A hidden world of fungi, bacteria and microscopic life is constantly moving through the soil beneath every step 🌿

In this month’s Lab Talk, discover how these tiny organisms shape ecosystems, recycle nutrients and keep life above ground connected to life below it.
Through the lens of science, the unseen becomes impossible to ignore 🔬

A hidden world exists around plant roots 🌱

Meet the Microbe of the Month: Streptomyces lividans.
A soil-dwelling bacterium that plays a key role in help keeping ecosystems in balance, working alongside plants and other microbes, while helping protect against pathogens.

Resilient and adaptable, it remains active even under challenging conditions, spreading through the soil and thriving in diverse environments. Where other microbes couldn’t survive.

Beyond the underground, this microbe is widely studied in science, offering insights into processes important for developing new medicines.

Look closer there’s more to see than meets the eye.
Discover it this May at ARTIS-Micropia 🦠
