Looiersgracht 60 is a non-profit exhibition centre for art, design and architecture located along its namesake canal in Amsterdam's gallery district. Previously a cardboard and bottling plant built in 1850, the space has been repurposed to facilitate a dynamic programme focusing on projects that defy traditional categorisation.

Join us this Thursday, 3 September, for an engaging Artist Talk and Finissage with artist Romy Yedidia (Romy Yedidia) and art historian and PhD candidate Anna Lawrence, marking the culmination of Public Research Residency IV: Impossible Bouquet.

The conversation will consider how floral imagery has circulated across art history and contemporary visual culture, quietly shaping ideals of beauty, youth and femininity. Bringing together Lawrence’s research into the seventeenth-century Dutch flower painter Maria van Oosterwijck and Yedidia’s investigation into the flower as an idealised image of nature coded as feminine, the discussion will trace how such visual and material languages are constructed, internalised and reproduced. Together, they will ask what it means to encounter flowers not only as aesthetic objects, but as cultural technologies through which ideas of femininity are continually formed and sustained.

Pictured above is the publication ‘Displace’ by artist Elena Khurtova (Elena Khurtova), published by J*p Sam Books (J*p Sam Books). Developed during the artist’s residency at 3 bis F | Centre d'arts contemporains d'intérêt national, the publication emerged from a material investigation into the soil management terrains of Aix-en-Provence, for which Khurtova brought 45 tonnes of excavated soil into the exhibition space. In collaboration with graphic designer Tariq Heijboer (), these excavated soils were incorporated into the publication as pigments in a duo-colour offset print, offering both an intimate and material insight into Khurtova’s research, practice, and personal connection to displaced soils. The publication also included essays by the artist and by writer-curator Amelia Groom ().

The book was launched in 2023 during Looiersgracht 60’s Archive Event VII: ‘Honeycombing’, which marked artists Marie Ilse Bourlanges (Marie Ilse Bourlanges) and Elena Khurtova (Elena Khurtova) second collaboration in the series, following Archive Event II: ‘Shelf-Life’ (2019)

We look forward to welcoming you to this weekend on August 22nd and 23rd for our Open Studio Weekend with Romy Yedidia!

Currently in residence at Looiersgracht 60, Romy’s research process centers on tracing how ideals of femininity and beauty became intertwined with nature, exemplified through the symbol of the flower — as well as the historical propagation and cultivation of the tulip. Yedidia will share works in progress, including material investigations with scanning, collage, layering, sewing, and embroidery, existing work, as well as a new video installation developed especially for the residency.

Drop by between 12:00–20:00 and engage with the research as it takes shape. Visitors are encourage to speak with the artist about her research and inspiration behind the work.

Extending beyond the various works on view, Temporary Bookshop XXI offers another entry point into the ideas and references that have informed Yedidia’s research throughout the residency, as well as the conceptual frameworks that have guided her practice.

‘Does this count as Protein?’ (2017), presented at Looiersgracht 60, marked the final graduating exhibition of the Sandberg Institute’s (Sandberg Instituut) temporary programme Materialisation in Art and Design (MAD), led by Herman Verkerk and Maurizio Montalti. Across eleven graduating practices, materiality became a lens through which broader questions around embodiment and the making process could be explored.

Shown above, Johan Buskov Romme’s (Johan Buskov Romme) Impossible Beauty (2017) approached sculpture as a site where light and structure intertwine: emerging from a process of experimentation modelled on the microscopic composition of feathers, the installation considered how optical and material forces might alter the experience of space. Through its mirrored surface, the work shifted alongside movements of the viewer, allowing perception itself to become part of its unfolding.

Presented as part of the group exhibition ‘From Seeing to Acting’, co-curated with Radical Reversibility (Radical Reversibility) in 2021, the work Anthemion (2015) by Spiros Hadjidjanos unsettles the assumption that historical artefacts and relics belong solely to the past as fixed and stable objects—illuminating instead, an ongoing dialogue between history, its representation and the malleable nature of imagery across different spatial and temporal contexts.

Developed from research at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens, the work took as its starting point a 1929 archival image of the anthemion, an ornamental frieze from the Erechtheum. From this photograph, the artist generated a three-dimensional depth map, producing a sculpture from a photograph of a sculpture, where depth introduced a further layer to what had once been a flat image. Once purely decorative, the anthemion has since circulated through a range of visual and ideological frameworks. In Anthemion (2015), Hadjidjanos holds this shifting process in view.

We are pleased to announce the public programme accompanying ‘Impossible Bouquet’, Romy Yedidia’s (Romy Yedidia) four-week Public Research Residency IV at Looiersgracht 60, which will take place across two public moments:

Event I: Open Studio Weekend
Join us on 22 and 23 August from 12:00–20:00 for the Open Studio Weekend, for a closer look at the questions and processes guiding the residency as Yedidia traces the histories of collection, cultivation, and propagation of the tulip through material investigations including scanning, collage, layering, sewing, and embroidery. The presentation will include works in progress, existing pieces, and a new video work unfolding in real time.

Visitors are welcome to drop in between 12:00 and 20:00, speak with the artist about the ideas and processes shaping the work, as well as browse Temporary Bookshop XXI, which will display a selection of titles that are central to Yedidia’s research trajectory and wider artistic practice.

Event II — Finissage and Artist Talk
On 3 September, join the artist in conversation with art historian and PhD candidate Anna Lawrence, to mark the close of ‘Impossible Bouquet’. Drawing from Lawrence’s research into the seventeenth-century Dutch painter Maria van Oosterwijck and Yedidia’s ongoing investigation into the cultural codification of the flower, the two will consider how such images circulate across art history and contemporary visual culture, and how they continue to be internalised and reproduced through daily actions, rituals, and forms of consumption.

The programme begins at 17:30, followed by a Q&A session and concluding with drinks.

We look back at Metamorphoses’ (metamorphoses objects ) pop-up at Looiersgracht 60, presented as part of GLUE festival (GLUE amsterdam connected by design). An artist-driven platform, they brought together a curated selection of works shaped by transformation and material innovation, foregrounding designers who emphasize overlooked materials and revive traditional techniques into contemporary forms and formats.

Shown above is ‘Soft Spring Stool’, created by Fabio Hendry of Swiss design studio Hot Wire Extensions (Hot Wire Extensions) in an exclusive collaboration with Metamorphoses Objects. Simple and understated in form, the stool offered a renewed reading of one of furniture design’s most familiar archetypes—reimagining the structure of the stool through a curved silhouette and soft contours. Working with materials often neglected or discarded, Hendry’s practice sought to draw out their latent potential, blending an artisanal sensibility with industrial design to propose a more sustainable material landscape.

Stemming from Looiersgracht 60’s commitment to a preservation, our Archive Series is made up of unique, site-specific events investigating archives through installation, performance and conversations with artists actively engaged in better understanding the past in our present. For the sixth edition of the series, visual artist and artistic researcher Miriam Sentler (Miriam Sentler) presented ‘The Chase’ — which brought together three of Sentler’s projects surrounding artistic methods of archiving endangered species. An installation was accompanied by an engaging public programme with the artist’s long-term collaborators, environmental researcher Sadie Hale and composer Drake Stoughtoun.

Ten years ago, in the summer of 2016, Looiersgracht 60 presented J*pan, Archipelago of the House, a travelling exhibition curated in collaboration with Tokyo-based photographer Jérémie Souteyrat, Véronique Hours l Fabien Mauduit, and Yokohama-based architect Manuel Tardits. Tracing the evolution of the J*panese house from 1933 to 2013, the exhibition brought together seventy houses across three chapters — Today’s Houses, Yesterday’s Houses, and Tokyo Houses — offering a situated view of residential architecture and its response to both natural and built environments. Pictured above is a house in Komazawa by Go Hasegawa, included in the section ‘Today’s Houses’. The project explored the relationship between ground floor and upper level through an element of openness: as light shifted through the day, the house registered the movement of the world outside, allowing space itself to become attentive and quietly, alive.

Does this count as Protein? (2017) brought together the final collective exhibition of the Sandberg Institute’s (Sandberg Instituut) temporary programme Materialisation in Art + Design (MAD) at Looiersgracht 60. Formed as a temporary collective of artists and designers, MAD approached materialisation as a process shaped not only by the actions of the practitioner, but by chance, discovery, and the physical properties of matter itself.
