Looiersgracht 60 is a non-profit exhibition centre for art, design and architecture located along its namesake canal in Amsterdam's gallery district. Previously a cardboard and bottling plant built in 1850, the space has been repurposed to facilitate a dynamic programme focusing on projects that defy traditional categorisation.

With the discovery of linear perspective and the invention of the point of view, the viewer came to occupy a central position in relation to the object seen. Viewer and viewed were thus established across from one another, as if separate and opposed.

In September 2018, Looiersgracht 60 presented the group exhibition and symposium Seeing without a Seer in collaboration with Radical Reversibility (Radical Reversibility). Drawing from fields such as experimental psychology, biology, geometry, and philosophy, the participating artists examined machine vision and image-making in a post-digital era. The lens-based works in the exhibition displaced the viewer from the central position to which they had become accustomed, turning instead toward the barely visible and the microscopic to explore ideas of a “self-seeing world” and more-than-human ways of being.

Following her four-week Public Research Residency at Looiersgracht 60, Sophie Rowley (SOPHIE ROWLEY) opened her major solo exhibition ‘Repetition is a Form of Change’, which centred on the artist’s inquiry into repetition as a force of transformation. Across the gallery, site-specific, large-scale textile works and intricate sculptural webs were carefully placed in relation to the building’s architectural features, allowing the works to enter into dialogue with its former factory past.

The exhibition redefined the boundaries between the material and the discursive, carefully weaving the artist’s past and visions for the future. By emphasising repetition as more than a visual motif but as an embodied process, she leans toward its transformative capacity to unsettle established ways of seeing, doing, and being.

In the summer of 2024, Looiersgracht 60 welcomed artist and designer Sophie Rowley (SOPHIE ROWLEY) for the third edition of our Public Research Residency. Over the course of four weeks, Rowley transformed the former factory space into her own studio as she further developed a large body of work titled ‘Repetition is a Form of Change’.

Rooted in deconstruction, layering, and unlayering, Rowley’s practice explores the spatial and sculptural potential of thread. Through sustained, repetitive gestures, her work considers how processes of ravelling and unravelling might unsettle ways of seeing, doing, and being. During the residency, this inquiry took shape in two new site-specific installations, Thread Sculpture (2024) and Skylight Installation (2024). Held ahead of her major solo exhibition at Looiersgracht 60, the residency offered a space to slow down, reflect, experiment, and create, foregrounding the making process as a matter of public interest, through two open studio moments.

We are pleased to share that this October, Looiersgracht 60 will present ‘Strangely Familiar’, a major solo exhibition by Dutch artist and designer Aldo Bakker (), opening 24 October from 16:00 - 19:00.

The exhibition marks a decisive new chapter in Bakker’s artistic practice, following his solo exhibition ‘Containing Content’ held at Looiersgracht 60 in 2015. While the latter centred on his fascination with pouring vessels and his ability to free familiar objects from established conventions, ‘Strangely Familiar’ will showcase objects that fully enter into their own terms, moving beyond questions of functionality. Displayed publicly for the first time, this new sculptural body of work will take over the gallery’s former factory floors, as Bakker explores line, mass, texture and colour in new ways.

The show runs from October 25 -December 23, 2026 and is interwoven with an engaging public programme. Information will be announced soon.

We look back at Public Research Residency IV, which welcomed Amsterdam-based artist Romy Yedidia (Romy Yedidia) to Looiersgracht 60 throughout August 2026 to develop ‘Impossible Bouquet’, exploring the cultural conflation of Woman and Nature through the image of the flower alongside her own experiences of pregnancy and the postpartum body.

During her four weeks in residence, this research developed into a series of new works. Among them, ‘Putting Food on the Table (Part One)’ (2026) emerged from Yedidia’s daily recording of herself pumping breast milk while away from her baby. Across 28 days, more than ten hours of footage accumulated transformed an often unseen form of maternal labour into part of the artistic process. In ‘Putting Food on the Table (Part Two)’ (2026), the milk produced during was preserved in 28 breast milk bags and presented inside a freezer on a pedestal.

The residency opened its doors to the public through an open studio weekend, and concluded with a finissage and conversation between Yedidia and art historian and PhD candidate Anna Lawrence.

Mining the archive, we came across this image taken during Looiersgracht 60’s transformation into an exhibition space in 2013. Rooted in a history of manufacturing and labour, traces of the former factory remain embedded throughout its interior; on its walls and structural details. Rather than concealing these remnants, the transformation allowed them to remain part of the space’s identity. Working with architect Moriko Kira (Moriko Kira), the building was carefully adapted through a series of minimal interventions that allowed its past to remain visible. In the atrium, a white floor was poured at a distance of 5–10 cm from the original walls and load-bearing columns, preventing direct contact between old and new materials while maintaining a clear distinction between the building’s past and its new use. This approach continues to inform Looiersgracht 60 today, where traces of the building’s factory past often enter into dialogue with contemporary artistic production and site-specific inquiry.

Anika Schwarzlose (Anika Schwarzlose) and Elena Khurtova (Elena Khurtova) presented their installation ‘Residue’ at Looiersgracht 60 during the 30th edition of the Sonic Acts Biennial in 2024 (Sonic Acts). Investigating the environmental repercussions of the former weapons factory at the Hembrug terrain, the artists employed soil chromatography to bring contaminated soil — an archive in itself — into dialogue with archival imagery from the site through a large-scale textile installation. By bringing these parallel archives together, ‘Residue’ reflected on the traces industrial production leaves behind.

Radical Reversibility (Radical Reversibility) is a research-based arts platform interested in the interplay between image, viewer and perception. Founded in 2017 by artists Martine Stig, Elodie Hiryczuk and Sjoerd van Oevelen, and curator/editor Frank van der Stok, curator and writer Taco Hidde Bakker and image editor Isabelle van Hemert. The practice functions as a network and laboratory where artists, writers, curators and academics contextualise their own work within new disciplines and engage in discourses both within and beyond the arts, through public events, exhibitions and publications.

Over the years, Radical Reversibility has presented several exhibitions and research-based projects at Looiersgracht 60, starting with ‘Seeing without a Seer’ (2018), a group exhibition and symposium exploring alternative ways of looking, thinking and image-making. Three years later, we co-presented ‘From Seeing to Acting’ (2021), a group exhibition exploring the simultaneous and reversible relationship between perception and action. In the summer of 2022, the collaboration expanded into the first iteration of Looiersgracht 60’s Public Research Residency Programme, where Amsterdam-based artists Doina Kraal () and Roger Cremers (Roger Cremers) were welcomed as inaugural residents to develop their collaborative project, ‘Spiritus – Archiving the (Un)imaginable’ (2022)
