Last week, we had the first meeting of our English-speaking bereavement group.
Starting a bereavement group can feel like a big step. Participants often arrive feeling a little nervous or unsure about what the evening will bring. They are meeting people they have never met before, entering a new space, and perhaps wondering whether they will feel comfortable sharing something so personal with others.
During the first meeting, participants have the opportunity to tell their stories — to share what has happened and what their loss means to them. They also listen to the stories of others. Although every loss is different, they recognise something of their own experiences in each other’s stories, which can create a sense of connection and understanding.
At the end of the evening, we took a moment to check in with everyone and hear how the first meeting had been for them. Their words were touching:
“It makes me feel less alone in my grief.”
“I am grateful and ‘happy’ to be here.”
“I appreciate listening to each other.”
“I am tired now, but this is nourishing.”
“I like the group, and it feels good to be vulnerable.”
“I am looking forward to next week.”
It was a beautiful and moving way to end our first evening together. There was a sense that, by sharing, listening and simply being present with one another, something had already begun to grow — a feeling of connection, recognition and perhaps a little less loneliness in the midst of grief.
And there was already a wish to come back and continue together next week.
If you think this group could help you, or someone you care about, please don't hesitate to reach out or share this post with others who may need it. The next group will start in February 2027.
