We would like to invite you to Drag Daughters, a powerful solo exhibition by Michelle Sank at Het Zuid-Afrikahuis in Amsterdam. ✨

Through striking portraits, Drag Daughters captures the vibrant drag community of Cape Town, celebrating resilience, visibility, individuality, and unapologetic self-expression in contemporary South Africa.

Michelle Sank grew up during apartheid as the child of immigrant parents, a background that continues to shape her exploration of subcultures and contemporary social issues. Internationally recognised for her portrait photography, her work has been exhibited worldwide and honored with awards.

Join us for a lecture and guided tour with the artist Michelle Sank, followed by a reception. The opening event will also be livestreamed on the Zuid-Afrikahuis website.

We’re closing our artist introductions with a deeply human long-term project; one that offers rare access into a world often unseen ✨

The Travellers by Birte Kaufmann

German photographer Birte Kaufmann, based in Cologne, explores themes of identity and social marginalization through empathetic portrait and documentary photography.

The Travellers (2011–ongoing) follows Ireland’s largest minority group as they navigate life within contemporary Western European society. Living largely parallel to mainstream culture, these communities are rarely seen from the inside. Through time, trust, and close connection, Birte was able to document their everyday lives with remarkable intimacy.

What began as a journey in 2011 evolved into an ongoing relationship with one extended family. By living alongside them, Birte and her camera became part of daily life, capturing moments that move beyond stereotype, revealing both tenderness and complexity.

“I did not want to romanticize them, but rather show their everyday life… Over time, I have gained their trust. Consequently, I was allowed to live with them so that I and my camera became part of their daily lives.”
— Birte Kaufmann

We can’t wait for you to experience this powerful work in person.

Join us for the opening reception on April 11, 17:30–19:30 🥂
