Opening 5 September: Books, a new solo exhibition by Rafaël Rozendaal. Books comprises a series of diptychs pairing monochrome canvases in muted pastel tones, framed together like an open book. [...] The paintings arrive at a moment of image inflation. Stimulation has become an ambient condition rather than an event. Absence, for Rozendaal, is not a lack but an opening: the blank page as unclaimed territory, an opportunity to create. Opening 5 September: Sightings, a new solo exhibition by Jan Robert Leegte, building on his acclaimed presentation at Art Basel | Zero 10 (June 2026). It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marijke De Roover (1990-2026).

Having just concluded her second solo exhibition at Upstream Gallery, we were excited for a future of adventures with Marijke, whose talent, humour and wit will be so greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends.

Marijke De Roover was a part-time professional karaoke singer, meme connoisseur and taxi driver; widely known for her q***r and feminist performance work

In her artworks, she dealt with questions regarding the nuclear family, feminism/motherhood, ethics of reproduction, and love, romance and compulsory heteronormativity under late capitalism.

A commemoration will take place on August, 29 at KIOSK, followed by a drink at her favourite bar ‘Fatima’ to celebrate Marijke’s life. Details to be announced.

Marijke held a Masters in Fine Arts from KASK School of Arts, Ghent (BE) where she was nominated for the Start Point Prize, Prague (CZ).

In 2020 she had her first institutional solo at Museum de Pont in Tilburg (NE). Her work has been shown at among others: Centre Pompidou, Paris (FR), Museum fur Neue Kunst, Freiburg (DE), David Roberts Art Foundation (Evening of Performance), London (UK), Garage Rotterdam (NL), Brakke Grond, Amsterdam (NL), Garage, Moscow (RU), BOZAR, Brussels (BE), ARCADE, London (UK), Goethe Institute, Dusseldorf (DE) and Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main (DE), KIOSK, Ghent (BE), Annie Gentils, Antwerp (BE) & TATJANA PIETERS, Ghent (BE).

She was represented by ARCADE, London (UK) en Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam (NL).

We’re delighted to share that Museum Museum de Fundatie has acquired two paintings by Jen Liu for its permanent collection. Both works are on view in the museum’s collection presentation through 20 September 2026.

From the press release: “New York–based Jen Liu brings an international and interdisciplinary perspective to the collection. Her two acquired works — Back of Head: Tunnel of Love and Zao Nainai’s Snacktime (both 2025) — belong to a research-driven painting practice in which she connects national identity and archival material to distinctive materials, from handmade acrylic paint to traces of electronic waste.”

On Orbits
Endless circular motions in nature are born from two sources. They are either guided by celestial motions, like the sun or moon or they are made by humans. Everything else dampens. And maybe what makes the natural repetitive motions so mesmerising is them being whispers from space. So when we trap endless loops, wind- and watermills, the steam engine, dynamos, the clock, the computer processor, it makes us divine.

Jan Robert Leegte’s Orbits (2026) is a fully on-chain project on Ethereum mainnet. A WebGL engine generates a sequence of JPEG files at 12 frames per second. Orbits is responsive and interactive. You can drag-rotate the camera within the work.

Orbits appears as a scene that has never existed. It recalls memories of science-fiction, a planet glimpsed through extreme signal degradation. It is a familiar motion but unplaceable in origin. A world existing only in the instant it is compressed, orbiting only because we are watching.

A 3D scene of spheres orbiting each other is generated and compressed in real time, ten times per second. There is no source file, no recorded footage. The world exists only in the moment the codec produces it, invoked and compressed into existence, frame by frame. The result sits somewhere between a space transmission and a science-fiction memory, a planet glimpsed through extreme signal degradation, a familiar motion but unplaceable in origin. The work recalls the Vasulkas, who treated the video signal itself as material, not recording the world but processing the medium live.

When viewed online, the work becomes interactive: dragging the camera shifts the scene, and with it the artifacts themselves.

Jan Robert Leegte has worked with the internet as an artistic medium since 1997, placing him among the pioneers of net art. Scrollbars, selection marquees, Google Maps interfaces, raw code — the overlooked grammar of digital life, treated as material in its own right. In 2002, before post-internet became a movement, he was already bringing the logic of digital infrastructure into physical gallery space. We’re proud to present work this June at as part of Zero 10, Art Basel’s curated initiative for art of the digital era.

Armen Eloyan’s new solo exhibition opens 23 May! Be welcome from 17.00 - 19.30hrs.

Upstream Gallery is pleased to present city paintings AMSTERDAM, a solo exhibition of new work by Armen Eloyan. Eloyan is known for heavily impastoed canvases that blend cartoon imagery, abstraction, and personal narrative. This exhibition marks his first solo show dedicated entirely to landscape painting, a body of work that emerged from a recent period spent in Amsterdam.

Drawing on a visual vocabulary shaped by American and Western European popular culture, from cartoons and comics to the painterly lineage of Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning, and Paul McCarthy, Eloyan’s work moves between abstraction and figuration. His practice uses the language of caricature to probe the absurdities of modern life, consumerism, and alienation, while remaining grounded in the physical, gestural pleasures of the medium itself.

Armen Eloyan (1966, Armenia) lives and works in Switzerland. He was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in 2004–2005. Solo exhibitions include Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen (CH); Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London (UK); Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris (FR); and Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou (FR). His work is held in collections including M HKA, Antwerp (BE); Kunstmuseum Den Haag (NL); Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato (IT); Deutsche Bank Collection, London (UK); and the Olbricht Collection, Berlin (DE)
