Curated gallery shows of exceptional contemporary art to collect, presented in a 17th-century canal house in Amsterdam.

The Merchant House (TMH) presents contemporary art projects with sales of art as a funding strategy. Each project, curated by Founding Artistic Director Marsha Plotnitsky, brings together an extended exhibition, cultural and research events, and a dedicated catalogue/artist’s book. TMH has showcased international and Dutch innovators, such as Henk Peeters, Jan Schoonhoven, André de Jong, Chuck Close, Carolee Schneemann, Hilarius Hofstede, Craigie Horsfield, Judit Reigl, Pino Pinelli, and John Coplans, as well as young talent. Since it opened its doors in a historical canal house in Amsterdam in 2013, it has become known as a modern take on the Dutch tradition of a merchant—a vibrant art space freely open to the public.

The Merchant House is not only a gallery and a space for contemporary art, but also a prolific publisher.

Since opening in Amsterdam in 2013, TMH has developed dedicated catalogues, artists’ books, and limited editions in close collaboration with the artists. Each publication grows out of the research and conversations behind our exhibitions and projects, becoming an extension of the artistic work itself.

As the last days of the summer holidays come to an end, we are happy to welcome you back to The Merchant House and our current exhibition, FRAGMENTS. Featuring Pino Pinelli, Elsa Tomkowiak, Zhu Hong, Sylvie Bonnot, and André Stempfel, the exhibition remains on view through 10 September.

TMH Summer Highlights

Last week, Marsha Plotnitsky joined the international jury for POLYPTYQUE 2026, the contemporary photography event presented by Centre Photographique Marseille. We are happy to share that the three selected winners will be presented at The Merchant House next spring.

It was great to see Mary Sue’s work featured in the POLYPTYQUE 2026 announcement, bringing another TMH connection to Marseille.
