Vandaag, op Internationale Dag van de Culturele Diversiteit blikken we terug op de tentoonstelling van Antonio Obá in de Oude Kerk. Een werk dat niet alleen de gedeelde geschiedenis tussen Nederland en Brazilië zichtbaar maakte, maar ook liet voelen hoe culturele tradities zich vermengen en blijven doorwerken. Laten we niet alleen vandaag, maar elke dag stilstaan bij het belang van culturele diversiteit en het begrip voor de waarden die daarin besloten liggen.

Today, on the International Day for Cultural Diversity, we’re reflecting on Antonio Obá’s exhibition at the Oude Kerk. A powerful exploration of the shared histories between the Netherlands and Brazil, and of how cultural traditions merge and continue to resonate across time. Not just today, but every day, we’re reminded of the importance of making space for cultural difference, and for the conversations and understanding it can open up.

Op vrijdag 5 juni neemt .wizard de Oude Kerk over tijdens Silence #70. De componist brengt een set met improvisatie, elektronica, natuurlijke klanken en invloeden uit Afro-diasporische en Surinaamse muziektradities. Phantom Wizard is een componist wiens werk grenzen doet vervagen en tradities opnieuw verbeeldt. Zijn werk is rauw, intuïtief en voortdurend in beweging. Phantom Wizard is a composer whose work dissolves boundaries and reimagines traditions. His practice exists in a constant state of becoming: raw, intuitive, and continuously shifting. Wat is jouw favoriete werk van Jesse Darling?

Verspreid door de ruimte staan sculpturen die zijn opgebouwd uit gebruikte meubels, metalen onderdelen en kapotte apparaten. Darling liet zich inspireren door de bijna veertig altaren die in de middeleeuwen in de kerk aanwezig waren. Rond deze altaren kwamen pverschillende groepen mensen samen, elk met hun eigen rituelen. In Godsworth keren deze plekken van ontmoeting en betekenisgeving terug. Darling laat zien dat waarde niet ligt in perfectie of in iets goddelijks, maar juist in het onvolmaakte en menselijke.

What is your favourite work by Jesse Darling?

Scattered throughout the space are sculptures made from used furniture, metal parts and broken appliances. Darling was inspired by the nearly forty altars that once stood in the church during the Middle Ages. Around these altars, different groups of people would gather, each with their own rituals. In Godsworth, these places of encounter and meaning-making return. Darling shows that value does not lie in perfection or in something divine, but rather in imperfection and the human condition.

Als vaste bezoeker van onze reeks ochtendconcerten Silence vertelt zij: ‘Als je de Oude Kerk binnenstapt, nog voor de muziek is begonnen, voel je dat de grootsheid van het gebouw iets met je doet. De ruimte zorgt voor een bijzonder goede akoestiek, de klanken raken je diep en het voelt bijna alsof je één bent met het geluid. New perspectives: meet our visitors. Today: Bodil. As a regular attendee of our morning concert series Silence, she shares: ‘When you step into the Oude Kerk, even before the music starts, you can feel the building’s grandeur working on you. The space has an exceptional acoustic and the sound carries through you in a way that feels almost physical, as if you become part of it. Tijdens zonsopkomst luisterden we vorige week vrijdag in de Oude Kerk naar een indringende improvisatiesolo op basgitaar van Farida Amadou. In haar onderzoekende spel wisselden lang aangehouden tonen, stilte en vrije improvisatie zonder vaste melodie of ritme elkaar af. Benieuwd naar de volgende Silcene? At sunrise last Friday, we gathered in the Oude Kerk for a compelling bass guitar improvisation by Farida Amadou. Her exploratory performance moved between sustained tones, silence and free improvisation without fixed melody or rhythm. Curious about the next edition?
