Pitching from the intersection of fashion, culture, and social change we would like to immerse you in an exhibition that disturbs our definitions of sustainability through telling the complex stories of Cotton. Knowing Cotton Otherwise rests on pillars of collectivity and community building. Telling the multiple stories of Cotton from a perspective that merges twisted (hi)stories and innovative future-stories.

Knowing Cotton Otherwise, has come to be through an immersive and collaborative process between the curatorial team and the various artists, designers, innovators and collectives in Amsterdam and beyond. Together, we have crafted an exhibition that invites you to play, to wonder, to reflect. To move towards a point where we come upon the complex intersection of sustainability, political histories, and socio-economic barriers within all the conversations that Cotton triggers.

We invite you into an interconnected and inspiring web of global cultures which have all been touched by the impact of cotton, especially considering local perspectives of artists, designers and initiatives based here in Amsterdam. We give you an exhibition whose pedagogy is transformative, that is beyond individualism. One that is in a process of collective critique.

A Durable Swagger-scape wanted to say that sustainability can be very effectively communicated via the virality and coolness of black pop culture, hip hop, and R&B.

An ecosystem of BIPOC creatives that resides in and around Amsterdam was activated to have these conversations during the finisage. We elevated vernacular slaguages, popular black cultures including hip hop, R&B, and Rap to the level of the other ways of knowing that are usually used to communicate sustainability.

I really wanted to come to Oscam and speak with honour in a visual language that is accessible for people specifically located in the Bijlmer. To rejoice in the power of the local scenes that have erupted over time. When l think about the Amsterdam Fashion scene, I have to mention Jean Paul, Nella, Esmeralda and now AiRich and Ara are bursting onto the scene with a reverberating impact. You can't say fashion without saying BIPOC, you can’t say BIPOC fashion without saying q***r Bipoc fashioning. It is a real honour to be given the grace to stage conversations with such exciting people.

Much appreciation to Mariaan Duff, Geobella and the rest of the Oscam team for relentlessly helping us realise this exhibition. This exhibition has unfolded as a collaboration between Oscam and the Fashion For Good Museum. This panel in particular has seen the Sandberg Institute join the partnership.

The A Durable Swagger-scape exhibition is coming to its end. A Durable Swagger-scape pulled from multiple strings to tell a story that very much requires building upon, we briefly explored music videos, thinking with the glam and glitter of musical performances and the sonic implications of sustainability.

With this Finisage,we have invited prominent photographers, Stylists, and writers on the Amsterdam scene to further ground and deepen the topics explored in the exhibition. In the first panel, stylists Jean Paul Paula, Esmeralda Shipper and Dalma Cyeza will discuss how stylists act as connectors between pop-culture and sustainability?

The second panel will have photograpers Nella Ngingo, AiRich, Violette Esmeralda and Nixon Mukiza discussing how the image of pop-culture is captured, and how can we incorporate sustainability into these mechanisms?
For the final panel, Munganyende Hélène Christelle, Jeanine van Berkel and Olamide Alao speak on how we can write sustainability into pop-culture?

This finisage is a collaboration between Oscam, Fashion For Good and Sandberg Institute’s Making the Over ground Underground Program. The panels will be moderated by Arra Oosterwolde

EXHIBITION

A Durable Swagger-scape is our collective imagination of who has Swagger. We have engaged with local artists, designers, stylists and photographers to explore how Swagger flows, from a feeling, to a sound, to a brand, to a design and then back to a feeling? How can we use Hip Hop, R&B, design, branding and creativity to spread the sustainability gospel?

Join us this Friday the 11th of November for a festive opening at OSCAM to celebrate the “A Durable Swaggerscape” Exhibition. We have invited amazing musical artists Crystal Chanay, NIÑO DIVINO, DIAMO and Aida Ra Mana to set fire on our stage.

OSCAM and the Fashion for Good Museum have joined forces to present the A Durable Swagger-scape Exhibition under the curatorship of Musoke Nalwoga. The “A Durable swaggerscape exhibition aspires to open conversations around the concept of ‘Swagger’ and how to employ swagger as sustainable practice.

Please RSVP via the link in Bio.

A stealth political piece about a Palestinian family’s rough immigration to heartland America, effectively conveyed by a lovable cast. In just 90 minutes, Cherien Dabis tactfully explores big themes – alienation, cultural identity, and a sense of belonging – carefully detailing a forced immigration experience.
