From among 25,000 humorous cartoons, caricatures, illustrations, and posters from the Museum of Caricature’s collection, the exhibition’s creators selected nearly 500 of the funniest, sharpest, most insightful, most interesting, and most valuable—in short, the best—works. The authors of the works featured in the exhibition include: Jan Matejko and Ha-Ga, Butenko, Tym, Mrożek, Dudziński, Raczkowski, Młodożeniec, Lenica, Kobyliński, Pokora, Cieślewicz, Wielgus, Szancer, Witz, Zaruba, Miklaszewski, Zarachowicz, Berezowska, Dymny, Ibis, Ziomecki, Ferster, Lengren, Pągowski, Mleczko, Topor, Jujka, Papp, Fedorowicz, Szajna, Gryń, Starowieyski, Gawłowski, Bohdanowicz, Jakubowska, Stopka, Derwich, Broda, Tarska, Piotrowski, Szaybo, Dwurnik, Chmielewski, Czeczot, Karczewska, Krauze, Macedoński, Lutczyn, Puchalski, Tomaszewski, Sawka, Flisak, and Lipiński. The exhibition’s concept and scope draw directly on the exhibition „The Best Works from the Collections of the Museum of Caricature,” which Eryk Lipiński prepared in 1983 for the opening of the Museum’s headquarters at Kozia 11 in Warsaw.

„The Best of the Museum of Caricature” opens the Museum’s archives to a wide audience. Two of Art was there, and we highly recommend this exhibition.

In the exhibition „Transitional Landscape,” Wojciech Tylbor Kubrakiewicz presented works from 2019-2026. The oldest of these won first prize at the 12th Quadrennial of Polish Woodcut and Linocut in Olsztyn in 2019, while the most recent was created in January of this year, and the exhibition at the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow marks its premiere.

All works were created after the author’s return from the United States, where he lived and worked at Indiana University in Bloomington for two years. The author transforms memories and colorful afterimages from this period into a personal map of the experiences and emotions that accompanied him on his long journeys. At the same time, he grapples with the awareness of climate change, which is irreversibly transforming the world he sees. His works are primarily landscapes, based on photographs taken during his travels. Some have a realistic quality, while others focus on symbolic and abstract representations of nature, incorporating elements of maps and geological cross-sections. A common motif in these landscapes is provincial architecture, while at other times they are dominated by mountain landscapes, with a particular focus on Zabriskie Point—a picturesque rock formation in Death Valley.

Into this nostalgic world of memories, a premonition of impending disaster creeps in, the specter of which appears in his latest artwork, „Do Ghosts Drown in Flooded Houses.” It is also the first print depicting a non-American landscape, and its presence at the exhibition heralds the artist’s commencement of work on a new series addressing climate change and the issue of water, which plays a key role in this context. Wojtek has had over twenty solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad and has participated in over one hundred and fifty group exhibitions. .tylbor

Adam Kilian – a master of puppet theatre and book illustration
Adam Kilian was one of the most outstanding Polish set designers, illustrators, and puppet artists of the 20th century. He was born in 1923 in Lviv and died in 2016 in Warsaw. Throughout his life, he created art full of color, humor, and folklore inspiration, which has become a permanent part of the history of Polish puppet theatre and book illustration.
The artist was primarily associated with the Teatr Lalka, where he worked as a set designer and art director for over sixty years. He created over 300 stage designs, nearly 200 of which were for puppet theatres. He co-founded the unique style of Polish puppet theatre – full of poetic imagination, folk inspiration, and expressive visual art.
Adam Kilian’s work was distinguished by its extraordinary imagination and ability to imbue puppets with a unique character. The artist used wood, wicker, glass, string, and metal, treating the material as inspiration for his artistic form. He himself said that puppet theater was a „theater of miracles,” in which the set designer could allow himself complete freedom of imagination.
His most famous theatrical productions included:
* About Zwyrtała the Musician
* Decameron 8.5
* Flying Windmill / photos from the Baj Warsaw Theater archive
* Guignol
* Lives of the Saints
* Painted on Glass
* Stanisław Wyspiański’s Wedding

Performances inspired by Polish folklore and folk art held a special place in his work. Kilian often employed motifs from the Krakow nativity scene, folk ornaments, and intense color combinations. This made his set designs easily recognizable and incredibly painterly.

Mirosław Pokora (1933–1992) was a Polish graphic artist, illustrator, and cartoonist, valued primarily for his distinctive book illustrations and humorous satirical drawings. He was one of the artists who co-created the recognizable style of Polish children’s illustration in the second half of the 20th century.

Pokora graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His work combined sparse linework, expressive color palette, and subtle humor, making his illustrations instantly recognizable. He particularly enjoyed deforming figures, simplifying forms, and using light caricature, giving the characters a dynamic and somewhat theatrical character.

The artist collaborated with numerous publishing houses and magazines, creating illustrations for children’s and young adult books, as well as for press publications. His most famous projects include illustrations for Polish editions of classic children’s literature, including Thorbjørn Egner’s The Robbers of Cardamom.

Mirosław Pokora’s work holds an important place in the history of Polish book illustration of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Today, his works are sought after by illustration collectors, vintage design enthusiasts, and collectors of the Polish School of Illustration.

On our website, you can see the artist’s latest illustrations, which will be featured in our exhibition on June 26th in Amsterdam.
