Gallery ILÉ is delighted to announce that works by the Beninese visual artist Nathanaël Vodouhè has been selected to join the prestigious Art Club of The European Medicines Agency.

The collection was officially unveiled Tuesday 16 December 2025, in presence of Mr. Franck Diafouka, Head of Internal Audit and several members of EMA’s welcoming committee.

Taking center stage underneath the 81 meters high atrium, 4 of Vodouhè’s iconic mixed media on burned wood sculptures are currently adorning the main entrance hall, where they are greeting EMA’s 1500 staff members, and the esteemed organization’s extensive network of associates and accredited visitors.

The following works are in view:

Sovereignty
Grace
Cosmogenesis
The Oracle

SYNOPSIS:

As if rising from the magmatic pools of alien volcanos, these sculptures are the reincarnations of scorched souls. Enthralled in parts, baring ashen cracks and adorned with imperial cloaks of shimmering pigmentations, these ethereal totemic entities are hinting at the fuming wounds inflicted by the harshness of a world that too often undermines the symbiotic beauty of human interrelations and instead chooses to destroy its environment.

The arresting visual narrative of Nathanaël Vodouhè further brings into play polarizing emotions like kindness & cruelty, or dogmatic stances on good vs evil, light vs darkness or intemporality vs finality. Seemingly interacting in harmony, upon closer look, these emphatic dichotomies denounce in fact, the sins of a modern society trapped in a race against itself, evermore concerned with mass production, the accumulation of material possessions and generating profits, at any cost, even if it means consuming our inherent humanity from the inside out.

Vodouhè’s whimsical emissaries from the forest are on view from 16 December 2025 through 27 February2026.

In his photographic Series entitled Nego Fugido, curator, PhD researcher and critically acclaimed photographer, Nicola Lo Calzo, investigates a unique performative tradition, held every July in the Quilombola community of Acupe, Brazil.

Originating in the aftermath of the abolition of slavery, this community-based performance re-enacts the violence and the struggle for freedom of the enslaved, through symbolic resistance and collective memory.

Lo Calzo’s practice focuses on themes of memory, identity, as well as colonial and postcolonial histories. His long-term documentary projects often explore how communities preserve or reclaim cultural memory in the face of marginalization and historical erasure.

Elaborate, symbolic and highly intimate, the paintings by Dominique Zinkpè possess a riveting surrealist quality. In his abstracted multiverse, the seminal artist often features sinuous and hybrid anthropomorphic entities, powerful chimeras and mythical beasts engaged in romps of power, disguise and allure that hint at the irony and satire of the human comedy.

On 22 October, I was invited to address the general assembly at The European Medicines Agency headquarters in Amsterdam, by presenting a 40 minutes exposé, against the backdrop of Black History Month, on the following topic ‘Understanding The Impact Of Black Heritage, History & Culture In Europe And Beyond’.

I would like to thank Mr. Franck Diafouka, EMA Head of Internal Audit, his entire team and everyone attending both in the conference room and online for this honor and for making this equally exhilarating and humbling moment of shared knowledge and convergence possible.
