Famille Verte

In this series we present you with three more objects from our beautiful Famille Verte catalogue. Next up is this pair of porcelain bottles with a pear-shaped body tapering into a tall, narrow neck. Each bottle is covered in a dark ‘powder blue’ glaze, with three reserved quatrefoil cartouches around the body - each outlined in iron-red.

The cartouches are decorated with a distinct auspicious decoration in overglaze famille verte enamels, in greens, iron-red, aubergine, yellow and blue. The first panel has red, white and yellow chrysanthemums - one with a gilt day lily - growing from a grassy mound. The second has a large vase with peacock feathers and a branch of coral next to a censer on a stand, surrounded by various objects from the Hundred Treasures. The third panel is decorated with branches of red and gilt plum blossom with bamboo, issuing from a grassy ground.

Famille Verte

In this series we present you with three more objects from our beautiful Famille Verte catalogue. Starting of with this unusual conical bowl, decorated on the outside, with a continuous narrative scene in fine famille verte enamels. It is divided into three different figural episodes set in a rocky landscape, executed in three shades of green, blue, red, yellow and black enamels.

The narrative on this bowl possibly depicts a popular episode from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The main scene is of the famous warrior Guan Yu, carrying his iconic crescent blade (青龙偃月刀) and mounted on his famously swift horse, Red Hare (Chitu 赤兔). Another scene is of an imminent ex*****on, which Guan Yu will step in to prevent. This combination reflects the iconic moral saying: Guan Yu manifests righteousness and stays the blade (关公显义,刀下留人). The scene emphasizes the importance of correct moral judgement at a critical moment. When this image is placed on everyday objects, such as this bowl, it expresses the wish for moral justice to enter ones daily life.

Augustus the Strong

For this series, we highlight three objects that were once in the collection of Augustus the Strong, now the Royal Dresden Porcelain Collection. What makes this collection particularly interesting are the surviving 18th-century written inventories, in which each item in the collection was recorded and numbered.

This set of three unusually tall baluster vases, have slim trumpet necks. The bulbous main bodies, are decorated with a dense pattern of lotus scrolls, large peony blooms and qilong dragons. The reserved panels are in the shape of triple gourd vases, decorated with archaic vases and auspicious objects from the Hundred Antiquities. The bases carry the etched inventory number from the collection of Augustus the Strong: N:49.vvv. The zigzag line indicating the category Blue and White East Indian Porcelain.

Augustus the Strong

For this series, we highlight three objects that were once in the collection of Augustus the Strong. He was an avid collector of Oriental Porcelain, of which by 1719 he already amassed 19,000 pieces. The collection increased to a massive 23,000 recorded items by 1721 and 35,000 by 1735.

This café au lait bowl and dish, were also once part of his collection. They are both covered around the outside with a yellow-brown café au lait glaze, with four stylized lotus flowers in famille verte enamels. On the inside is a double blue circle, with a large blue, green and red lotus surrounded by smaller red flowers. Around the inside and the outside of the rim is a green band, with red and blue flowerheads - interrupted by four cartouches decorated with flowering plants, colourful birds and butterflies. Both the bases have an incised inventory number: N:139I on the plate and N:120I on the Bowl - indicating that these pieces once belonged to the Royal Porcelain Collection in Dresden.

Augustus the Strong

For this series, we highlight three objects that were once in the collection of Augustus the Strong. He was Elector of Saxony, King of Poland and a major patron of the arts. Known for his passion for porcelain, he famously suffered from the maladie de porcelaine - the porcelain sickness.

This pair of large Chinese porcelain jardiniëres, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, feature alternating panels of figural landscapes and vases on low tables. Holes in the bottom, indicate their use as planters, likely for costly citrus trees, displayed at the Zwinger Palace in Dresden. In the early 18th century, European courts embraced 'citrusmania', inspired by Versailles, showcasing impressive citrus tree collections.

Open Gallery Days - 28-30 November 2025

We have now settled back into the gallery, after a very successful and vibrant PAN Amsterdam. The fair attracted 46.000 visitors in eight days, a record since its inception in 1987! Where many objects, such as this wonderful camel will be on display. So make a note in your diary and we'll see you this weekend in our gallery in 's-Hertogenbosch!
