August 12, 1989 - Remembering Samuel Okwaraji
On this day in the year 1989, Nigerian footballer and lawyer Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, an Igbo son from Imo State, died at the age of 25 after collapsing during Nigeria’s 1990 World Cup qualifying match against Angola in Lagos.
He was a talented footballer and a highly educated man. Okwaraji earned a Master’s degree in International Law while pursuing his football career in Europe. His passion for representing Nigeria made him a symbol of patriotism and sacrifice.
We remember Sam Okwaraji - a young life cut short, but a legacy that lives on.
