Every masterpiece starts with work.
Every brushstroke carries intention.
Every creation demands patience, skill, and sacrifice.

Today, we celebrate the hands that build,
the minds that create,
and the spirit that refuses to stop.

Happy International Workers’ Day
from Iwalewa Gallery of Art.

Whether you paint, sculpt, design, teach, drive, trade, or hustle —
your work matters.

And the world is better because of it.

The story of the Zaria Rebels is one of the most important stories in African art history, and
most people in the U.S. have never heard it. In 1958, a group of young Nigerian students
decided European painting was not their inheritance. They built something new. Bruce
Onobrakpeya was one of them. Come learn the story.

Roots & Resonance opens today at Iwalewa Gallery. We begin with a living legend: Bruce
Onobrakpeya, whose prints and reliefs carry the full weight of Yoruba and Urhobo tradition into
the present moment. The ancestral is not the past. It is the ground on which the future is built.
Come meet the work.

Works available on artsy. Private viewings by appointment. Link in bio.

Some things can’t be spoken. They must be made. The ancestral is not the past. It is the ground on which the future is built.

Talking Drum.
Descent of Peace.
The Duo.
The Keeper of Tradition.
The Connection.
Migration of Spirits.

In glass beads on board, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh creates more than images he brings stories to life.
Born in 1943 during the height of modern African art, he pioneered bead painting as a fine art form. By fusing traditional Yoruba adornment with modernist structure, he bridges the gap between the ancestral and the present.
His work transforms drums into architecture and sacred stories into enduring forms. In his world, families are bound by geometry, and every hand-placed bead reflects a level of patience that feels almost philosophical.

Born in July 1963 in Burutu, Delta State, Abraham Uyovbisere has dedicated his career to capturing the soul of the Nigerian experience through both academic excellence and deep intuition. we are invited to journey through dynamic washes of color that transition from a primal, energetic spark into moments of deep, personal reflection. His mastery of form and light culminates in a study of poise and tradition, demonstrating how, through his expert hand, the abstract mind gives way to the serene and enduring beauty of the lived human experience

The ultimate masterpiece of love was painted in sacrifice. Today, we pause to reflect on the weight of the cross and the depth of redemption. At Iwalewa Gallery, we honor the beauty of a grace that was “crushed for our iniquities” so that we might find peace.
