THE WORK WITHIN

Yenwa Gallery is pleased to participate in EXPO CHICAGO 2026, Profile Section, Booth #410, April 9–12 at Navy Pier's Festival Hall, Chicago.

We present The Work Within, a duo presentation of sculpture by Joshua Nmesirionye (b. 1968, Nigeria) and painting by Laju Sholola (b. 1989, Nigeria).

Two artists, one generation apart, working in wood and tea-stained canvas, arrive at the same proposition: that interior formation is its own form of power. Nmesirionye carves from single logs of apa and almond wood, producing sheltered forms with dark, hollow interiors where transformation occurs out of sight.

Sholola layers black tea, ink, charcoal, pastel and acrylic on canvas, building portraits of women in full possession of themselves; figures who have already done the interior work, unhurried by the world that watches.

LAJU SHOLOLA | She Keeps Her Own Counsel I

Laju Sholola (b. 1989, Nigeria) works in layers of black tea, ink, charcoal, pastel, and acrylic on canvas, building figurative portraits that attend to the interior lives of women.

In She Keeps Her Own Counsel, women appear fully in possession of themselves, not withdrawn from the world, but unhurried by it. Where the surface opens and bare canvas breathes through, Sholola reveals something steady and self-held: a woman who has consulted herself and found that entirely sufficient.

Sholola has exhibited internationally across Lagos, London, Chicago, Houston, and Paris, with participation in Art X Lagos, Focus Art Fair New York, and Voices from the West at Maison Kala, Paris. Her work is held in the Coronation Art Collection and in private collections internationally. She was a resident at the Rele Arts Foundation in 2020. Her solo exhibition Be Here Now was presented by Yenwa Gallery, Lagos, in 2024.

JOSHUA NMESIRIONYE | Cocoon II: Inner Vessel

Joshua Nmesirionye (b. 1968, Nigeria) is a multidisciplinary artist whose sculptural practice centres the body, using carved forms in apa and almond wood to explore containment, tension, endurance, and becoming.

With over three decades of practice rooted in the Nigerian wood carving tradition, Nmesirionye has developed a distinct sculptural language shaped by material discipline, formal restraint, and psychological depth.

His first solo exhibition was presented by Yenwa Gallery in 2023. Cocoon (2022) was subsequently acquired by The Kinsey Collection (The Kinsey Collection) and later exhibited at the Holocaust Museum Houston. His works are also held by the Ilesha Trust, UK, ( )and other notable private collections.

SANCTUARY OF DREAMS by Pierre Christophe-Gam

The Sanctuary of Dreams is conceived as a rite of return; a space where Nigeria's ancestral knowledge meets contemporary tools to imagine the futures Africa dreams for itself. Presented in Lagos, where Yoruba/Ifá cosmologies, contemporary spirituality, and technological innovation coexist, the exhibition invites audiences not only to view but to participate in this visionary ritual of collective future-making.

Congratulations to Nola Ayoola on her standout solo presentation at , Miami Beach's 14th edition.

Nola Ayoola (b.1992, Lagos, Nigeria) is a remarkable multidisciplinary Nigerian artist whose works are a visual diary that expresses a language and translation of her being and culture. Through carved sculptures, portraiture, woven, and cut-out abstract compositions, her work encapsulates the philosophy that 'you cannot understand what you cannot pull apart! Furthermore, her artistic practice is an ongoing observation of her heritage and its profound impact on her identity. She does so by storytelling through varying lenses through which she sees and imagines.

We’re proud to have featured her in our “Inner Space” group exhibition (2023) and in our duo presentation at RMB Latitudes Art Fair (2024).

If you’re in Miami, do stop by Cierra Britton Gallery in the Nest section at Booth to experience the presentation in person.
