NATIONAL MUSEUM, AKURE HOLDS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH AT THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, ADO-EKITI

As part of its commitment to promoting cultural heritage education, the National Museum, Akure, on Thursday conducted an educational outreach programme at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The outreach, led by the Curator, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, was organized at the request of the Department of Library and Information Science, School of Computing and Information Communication Technology, following the suspension of the department's planned excursion to the museum due to prevailing security concerns.

The students were introduced to the meaning and functions of museums, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and the timeline of ancient Nigerian arts. They also received presentations on the cultural heritage of Ondo State, Nigeria's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Igbara-Oke Petroglyphs, and Iwo Eleru (Cave of Ashes).

A major highlight of the programme was the hands-on display of museum object replicas, giving students the rare opportunity to see, examine, and handle them, making the learning experience practical, interactive, and memorable.

The National Museum, Akure, remains committed to taking cultural education beyond the museum walls by bringing Nigeria's rich cultural heritage directly to schools and higher institutions, inspiring young people to appreciate and preserve our shared heritage.

NATIONAL MUSEUM, AKURE ADVOCATES STRATEGIC MUSEUM MARKETING FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE SUSTAINABILITY

National Museum, Akure, on Wednesday, 8th July 2026, held its monthly in-house seminar, advocating strategic museum marketing as a vital tool for preserving and promoting Nigeria's cultural heritage.

The seminar featured a paper titled "Sustaining Our Cultural Heritage Through Strategic Museum Marketing: Using National Museum, Akure as a Case Study," presented by Mrs. Salako Ebunlomo.

Mrs. Salako emphasized that beyond preserving artefacts, museums must adopt effective marketing strategies to attract visitors, strengthen community engagement, increase public awareness, and generate sustainable revenue.

She highlighted digital marketing, community outreach, educational programmes, strategic partnerships, and effective communication as key approaches, while identifying inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, limited digital presence, and low public awareness as major challenges.

She recommended improved investment in museum infrastructure, enhanced digital visibility, stronger collaboration with educational institutions and tourism stakeholders, continuous staff training, and innovative visitor-focused programmes.

The Curator, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, commended the presenter for her insightful paper and encouraged staff to continue contributing quality research at future seminars.

The Seminar Coordinator, Mr. Adefisoye Sunday Olalekan, also applauded the presentation. The seminar concluded with an object identification session.

Earlier, on Tuesday, 7th July 2026, the Curator granted an interview to correspondents of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Akure, on the evolution of Nigerian art as part of the Museum's public enlightenment programme.

NATIONAL MUSEUM AKURE PRESENTS COMMEMORATIVE PHOTO FRAME TO THE OGOGA OF IKERE-EKITI

As part of its commitment to strengthening collaboration with traditional institutions in preserving and promoting Nigeria's rich cultural heritage, the National Museum, Akure, on Thursday, 2nd July 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the palace of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Samuel Adejimi Adu Alagbado, the Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, where a commemorative photo frame from the 2026 International Museum Day excursion was presented to the revered monarch.

The Curator, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, who led the delegation, expressed profound appreciation to the monarch for his fatherly support, warm reception, and outstanding hospitality during the Museum's recent International Museum Day activities in Ikere-Ekiti.

Receiving the commemorative gift, the Ogoga thanked the National Museum, Akure, for the thoughtful gesture and commended the institution's unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria's cultural heritage. He also announced that the photo frame would be displayed in the Palace Hall of Fame Gallery upon its completion.

NATIONAL MUSEUM AKURE HOLDS IN-HOUSE SEMINAR ON CYBER-DOCUMENTATION OF MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

National Museum, Akure, on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, successfully held its monthly in-house seminar titled "Safeguarding Museum Collections: The Need for Cyber-Documentation in National Museums in Nigeria."

The seminar was presented by Mr. Ibrahim Lateef Mayokun, an Antiquities Protection Unit (APU) Officer, who highlighted the importance of digital technologies in the preservation, protection, and management of museum collections. He emphasized that cyber-documentation plays a crucial role in the identification, classification, accessibility, and safeguarding of cultural heritage against theft, loss, and deterioration.

Mr. Lateef further stressed the need for continuous training and retraining of museum professionals in digital record management and digital risk mitigation. He also called on the Federal Government and the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) to strengthen support for digital documentation initiatives across museums in Nigeria.

In her remarks, the Curator of the National Museum, Akure, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, commended staff members for their participation and encouraged continued commitment to the seminar programme as a platform for professional development.

The Chairman of the Seminar Committee, Mr. Adefisoye Sunday Olalekan, also praised the presenter for delivering an insightful paper and urged staff to actively participate in future seminars.

NATIONAL MUSEUM AKURE CELEBRATES NIGERIAN CHILDREN AT THE SECOND EDITION OF ITS ANNUAL CHILDREN'S DAY PROGRAMME

The National Museum, Akure, on 3 June 2026, successfully hosted the second edition of its annual Children's Day Celebration under the theme: “Safeguarding Children in the Media and Beyond: The Role of Museums.”

The event brought together pupils, teachers, and stakeholders in a vibrant celebration focused on child development, cultural education, and digital safety.

Representing the Director-General of NCMM, Mr. Olugbile Holloway, the Curator of National Museum, Akure, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, encouraged children to embrace and preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, respect their elders, and uphold positive values that strengthen their identity and future.

The programme featured an enlightening lecture by Mr. Ilesanmi Augustine Lisa, alongside educational talks, drama, cultural displays, news presentations, stage plays, Ewi renditions, and colourful cultural parades by participating schools.

Certificates of Participation were presented to all schools in recognition of their contributions, while refreshments were provided to celebrate the occasion.

NATIONAL MUSEUM, AKURE MARKS 2026 INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY WITH THE FOCUS OF PROMOTING UNITY THROUGH CULTURE

The National Commission for Museums and Monuments through the National Museum, Akure successfully hosted the 2026 International Museum Day (IMD) celebration on Wednesday, 20th May, 2026, under the global theme, “Museums: Uniting a Divided World.” The colourful event brought together traditional rulers, government officials, scholars, students, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the public in celebration of culture, unity, and heritage preservation.

In his goodwill message delivered by the Curator, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, the Director-General of NCMM, Olugbile Holloway, emphasized the role of museums in promoting peace, dialogue, and unity despite global divisions. He also highlighted innovations within the Commission, including Nigeria’s first digital museum and the upgrade of the Lagos exhibition gallery through the support of IHS Towers.

Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi appreciated staff, sponsors, and supporters for their commitment to preserving cultural heritage and disclosed that the celebration featured landmark activities, including the unveiling of Museum Spectacle, the museum’s official publication, and the presentation of its first-ever IMD coloured programme brochure. A projector donated by Honourable Sunday Oluwadamilare Falae, an associate of Gbenga Aluko, was also unveiled to support the museum’s educational activities.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the event, Dr. Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, represented by Mr. Ogungbemi Sunday, described museums as centres of learning, unity, and cultural exchange, while Chairman, Organising Committee, Mr. Adeola Jonath Morakinyo noted that museums remain important institutions for social cohesion and dialogue.

The event featured a lecture titled “Museums Uniting a Divided World” delivered by Mr. Ilesanmi Augustine Lisa, as well as a quiz competition among museum partners and vendors.

Awards were presented to distinguished personalities for their contributions to cultural promotion. Thomas-Wilson Ikubese received the Cultural Icon and Patron of National Museum, Akure award, while Gbenga Aluko was honoured as Cultural Youth Ambassador, National Museum, Akure, 2026–2027.

The celebration was enriched by colourful performances from schools and dance groups across Akure, featuring cultural dances, drama, fashion parades, traditional music, and cooking displays that showcased Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

As part of the celebration, the museum also embarked on a cultural excursion to the palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Samuel Adejimi Adu Alagbado, Ogoga of Ikere - Ekiti on 18th May, 2026.

The event ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Adeola Jonath Morakinyo, who appreciated guests, sponsors, schools, cultural groups, volunteers, media representatives, and staff for contributing to the success of the celebration, while renewing calls for unity, peace, and stronger support for museums.

🎉🏛️ INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2026 BEGINS IN GRAND STYLE! 🏛️🎉

The National Museum, Akure, officially kicked off the 2026 International Museum Day celebration with a colourful cultural excursion to the palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Samuel Adejimi Adu Alagbado, CFR, Agirilala II, the Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The visit, held under this year’s theme, “Museums: Uniting a Divided World,” was filled with rich culture, history, tradition, and warm royal hospitality.

Kabiyesi commended the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) for its efforts towards preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and expressed readiness to support the establishment of a museum in Ekiti State. He also shared fascinating historical insights about Ikere-Ekiti and its connection with Akure.

One of the highlights of the visit was the outstanding Ewi performance by a student of Ijapo High School, Akure, which earned special applause from Kabiyesi and guests present. In recognition of the brilliant performance, the student received a school bag donated through the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. Adeola Jonath Morakinyo.

Speaking during the visit, the Curator of the National Museum, Akure, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, appreciated Kabiyesi and the Queen for the warm reception while calling on Nigerians, especially the younger generation, to value and preserve the nation’s cultural heritage.

NATIONAL MUSEUM, AKURE HOLDS SEMINAR ON AUDIENCE RESEARCH AND MUSEUM DEVELOPMENT

The National Museum, Akure, on Wednesday, 13th May, 2026, hosted an insightful seminar titled “Audience Research: An Effective Tool to Improve the Public Image of Museums,” presented by Mr. Idiare Kehinde Young.

The presentation highlighted the importance of audience research in improving museum services, increasing visitors’ turnout, and enhancing the public image of museums. The presenter emphasized the need for museums to understand the expectations of both visiting and non-visiting audiences through regular evaluation and assessment of museum activities.

Mr. Idiare also noted that museum education officers must be flexible and innovative in adapting exhibitions and programmes to suit the interests of diverse audiences.

In her remarks, the Curator of the National Museum, Akure, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, appreciated members of staff, participants, and the organizing committee for their support and contributions toward the success of the seminar. NATIONAL MUSEUM AKURE @ ISINKAN OBARISA FESTIVAL 2026

On April 25, 2026, the National Museum, Akure (Department of Archaeology & Ethnography) participated in the Isinkan Obarisa Festival, popularly known as the Opa Rite, in Ondo State.

The delegation, constituted by the Curator, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, and led by the Head of Department, Mr. Adefisoye Olalekan Sunday, included:

• Mr. Toromade Tope Adekanye
• Mr. Okpah Ikechukwu

The team was received by HRM Oba Olugbemiga Ojo (Arulewolasi III), Ajagungbade I of Isinkan Kingdom, Olusi-Obarisa, Oral’opo of Isinkan Land.

NATIONAL MUSEUM, AKURE LEADS CALL TO SAFEGUARD HERITAGE AT GLOBAL MONUMENTS DAY CELEBRATION

National Museum, Akure, on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, joined cultural enthusiasts across the globe to commemorate the International Day of Monuments and Sites, an annual event promoted by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) to celebrate and promote the preservation of cultural heritage worldwide.

Declaring the event open, the Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Mr. Olugbile Holloway, who was represented by the Curator, National Museum, Akure, Mrs. Adegboye Janet Yemisi, welcomed participants to the programme themed “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters.”

She emphasized that proactive efforts and adequate funding are essential for the protection and safeguarding of cultural properties.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Prof. Busuyi Mekusi of the Department of English, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, presented a paper titled “Generation Under Self-Inflicted Siege.” The Professor, who specializes in African literature, oral literature, and literary criticism, identified disasters such as theft, vandalism, drought, and flooding as major threats to cultural heritage, noting that human activities often compound these challenges.

In his remarks, Prof. Oladeji Sunday of the Department of Ecotourism and Wildlife Management, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), reflected on previous engagements and reiterated that threats such as climate change and disasters are already impacting heritage sites. He stressed the need for practical strategies to mitigate these risks rather than merely acknowledging their existence.

In his reaction, the Head of Monuments and Sites, National Museum, Akure, Mr. Odutola Christian, called for urgent action to protect heritage sites through community engagement, effective monitoring, and collaboration.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Alabi Ọpẹ of the Department of Ecotourism and Wildlife Management, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, observed that cultural heritage is under serious threat globally. She noted that government responses have often been more preventive than responsive, despite the increasing impacts of terrorism, insurgency, and banditry. She advocated the adoption of modern surveillance systems, including drone technology, and called for increased funding and collaboration across all levels of government.

She further emphasized the role of religious and traditional leaders in safeguarding heritage sites.

While delivering her vote of thanks, the Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Mrs. Makanjuola Julianah Kehinde, appreciated the Curator, participants, sponsors, and committee members for their contributions to the success of the event.
