Craft a take-home engraveable pewter dish using traditional tools, similar to those used by pewtersmiths more than 100 years ago. Price: RM 75 per person

The Foundry workshop
Create a take-home pewter accessory freehand or from existing moulds using fundamental pewter crafting processes – casting, polishing and decorating. Price: RM 180 per person

Here’s a little something that happened today.

Royal Selangor Privileges members and guests joined us for a tour of Telepuk: The Imprint of Heritage at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, followed by a hands-on workshop with Langkasuka Movement’s Abdul Razak and Intan Jailani.

Guests got to examine patterned woodblocks and gilded textiles, learn about the process behind Telepuk and try their hand at the craft. The afternoon offered a closer appreciation of the artistry, skill and knowledge that have shaped this heritage practice.

A piece of heritage, made for today.

The Telepuk Collector’s Set brings six historic Telepuk designs into pewter, each retaining the intricate relief of its original woodblock and mounted on wood as a nod to its origins.

The designs draw from a series of 77 woodblocks dating from 1920 to 1923, once owned by H.R.H the Sultan of Selangor at the time and is now preserved in the V&A’s collection.

As part of its story extends beyond the pieces themselves, 20% of the proceeds from each set will support Langkasuka Movement’s work towards the preservation and continuation of Telepuk.

A glimpse into the world of Telepuk.

Historic woodblocks, gilded textiles, royal garments, tools and other artefacts offer a closer look at the materials and techniques behind this traditional Malay textile art.

With thanks to Langkasuka Movement, Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz, Victoria and Albert Museum, Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Perbadanan Adat Melayu dan Warisan Negeri Selangor (PADAT), Seni Ukir Bakawali and Yayasan Hasanah for their collections, research, expertise and support.

Come take a closer look at Telepuk.

Now on at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, Telepuk: The Imprint of Heritage brings together historic woodblocks, gilded textiles, royal garments, tools and other artefacts that reveal the craft behind this traditional Malay art of textile gilding.

See how intricate motifs were carved, impressed and brought to life in gold, including a collection of 77 Telepuk woodblocks dating from the 1920s, now preserved at the V&A.

Inspired by historic Telepuk woodblocks from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection, the Heritage Telepuk Awan Larat Coaster and Heritage Telepuk Floral Motifs Coaster bring intricate Malay motifs to the contemporary table.

For Telepuk: The Imprint of Heritage, Royal Selangor is proud to work alongside Langkasuka Movement, our Main Partner and Project Consultant. For years, Intan Jailani and Abdul Razak have researched, documented and advocated for Telepuk, building invaluable knowledge of the craft and relationships with its practitioners. Following the official launch of Telepuk: The Imprint of Heritage, Their Royal Highnesses were taken on a guided tour of the exhibition at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, accompanied by a live demonstration of traditional telepuk gilding.

On Thursday 27 August, Royal Selangor welcomed H.R.H. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, Sultan of Selangor, and H.R.H. Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, to officially launch Telepuk: The Imprint of Heritage in conjunction with Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka celebrations.

Held at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, Telepuk: The Imprint of Heritage celebrates the traditional Malay art of gold leaf gilding on textiles, historically reserved for royalty and nobility.

Gold leaf, carved woodblocks and intricate motifs come together in Telepuk, a traditional Malay textile art once closely associated with the ceremonial traditions of the Malay courts.

Royal Selangor honours the artistry of Telepuk while giving its distinctive motifs new expression in pewter.

Experience the craft through a month-long exhibition, new pewter designs and hands-on workshops, open to all at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre.
