Miss Katia Shvachko and her friends are from Ukraine. They had visited few places in Malaysia
and were made their last stop in Ipoh,
specially for festival lanterns workshop experiences.

We were having some fun in craft making, a little bit sharing of locally, Chinese/ Straits Chinese’s culture, some light CNY’s snacks, and tips some places to go along. They are big fans of traditional Chinese’s lanterns.

I wished them luck-happy for the short stay in Ipoh.
Happy Chap Goh Mei, today marked the 15th day of Chinese New Year. May bright and happiness spreading everywhere.

記得小時候,冬至前一晚,
媽媽們就會忙著用糯米粉摻和溫水搓成粿粉團,
搓湯圓。

記得小時候,搓湯圓就像親子活動一樣,
孩子們總會圍繞在媽媽身邊,幫手把切成小塊的粿粉團,放在掌心搓揉成圓球。小孩子在搓湯圓時,總會忍不住用糯米團捏塑一些動物、蔬果造型。就像捏面人一般,做起其他小玩偶,
而這也是搓湯圓活動中的另一種趣味!

當節日頻頻被湯圓便捷包裝和匆匆忙忙的生活方式
所取代時,這些溫馨的小時光更顯珍貴。

食譜
250g glutinous flour 糯米粉
200ml warm water 溫水
1 tablespoon sugar 糖

來搓搓湯圓。互賀 冬至快樂！

引言：在暗黕的大海漂遊,遠遠望見一丁紅光。
再去不遠,就是陸地了。(燈塔作用）

菊月,廟宇處處竪立篙燈。
（或有在門池高塔上燃烜盞盞明燈者）。皆同。

10人之間問了九人多數都不知所以。都是這樣：
看師父做所以我們承做。
看父老們竪所以我們從。
有時有些老傳統傳到後來,就以訛傳訛了。迷信了。
問為什麼用竹竿？用檳榔樹?
問為什麼橫竿竹頭(有枝處)微低而後竿偏昇？
問為什麼燈火分三行排座而非盞盞燈串起？
皆答非所問,問題回問題…最後都訝語了。

竪篙燈習俗,總需要回望歷史。從歷史處著手思考。
很久以前,人居處皆是單層樓房。要讓人知道某處有什麼活動,皆會起高竿做招募知。日常可見顏色鮮艷,
夜間必有燈火烜耀。人從遠處看就會知道此處有集合等等。以現在的文字來形容就是發射點／antenna.
如九皇篙燈,七月半燈幡,七月蔭燈,神誕迎神燈等等眾多篙燈,都是一些節日的縮寫方式。

我特別喜歡九月九盞篙燈。
因它把聚合形式了。更把抽像形態特徵表露無遺。
只是看和竪的人,都忘記了它的初衷。黃罩布紅大字（天官賜福),竿頭處微微低下,竿尾微微升起,爍爍風燈動,竿隨風擺擬人在掃地。

”掃去千災,招來百福。”
點上九盞燈火,就正式的進入了一場節日氣氛。

一代接一代,
生活在這片土地上的人,
仍然堅守復刻著代代相傳的記憶。

菊月。
禮斗。乞祈長壽。福食施捨。消災解厄。
麵桃與麵龜互贈, 同賀長春。

On Lunar calendar,
the 9th month, Vegetarian. Giving alms.
Was a praying for longevity, and warding off disasters and misfortunes. Peaches and tortoises bun are made as offerings and as food to carry the blessing of longevity. (Malaysian Chinese’s )

𠄘 众藝匠人師匠人所光彩,
讓是次的報導深實和見聞更廣。

製作傳統燈籠, 靠的不是一個人的努力,
是一群人的接力。當棒交接到我手里時,
一切已是絕響, 所以也就只能慢工精耕細作。
讓它的美麗再續吸引所有人的目光。

Making traditional lanterns isn't a one-person endeavor; it's a team effort. By the time the baton passes to me, it might be the last of its kind, so I must cultivate it meticulously, letting its beauty captivate everyone's gaze.

當小燈接扎到一半時, 老人家說她的手已繞轉不行,
開始頭暈目眩。早知道這難做就該去買一盏燈給孫女
算了～ 然後一直拈唸一直把手工完全。

當小燈完成呈現眼前時, 心里總覺得：也不是很难
罷了… 一直笑容滿面把小燈递給小小孩。

THE BEGINNING of a Malaysian Chinese’s Tradition
節慶小布燈的初心 （馬來西亞華人傳統）

In the past, when supplies were scarce, people upheld the spirit of thrift and frugality. After the Lunar New Year’s celebrations, red door banner would be carefully put down and cut into pieces and to exchange with friends, relatives, and neighbors to create patchwork quilts, children's clothing, or blankets. This not only symbolized mutual blessings but also demonstrated the wisdom of resource conservation. Leftover scraps of fabric would be reused to create lanterns, and other tiny decorations. 在過去物資匱乏的年代，人們秉持勤儉惜物的精神。年節過後，紅門彩會被細心剪裁，再與親友鄰里交換，用來拼製百家被、童裝或棉被，不僅寓意互相祝福，更展現珍惜資源的智慧。而剩餘的零碎布片，也會再次循用，製作小小燈籠、或小裝飾。

或許，單色彩的小小燈籠太過普通。

或許，紅罩籠上貼黃色的布窗再糊上大紅色的剪紙吉祥圖案，然後在花卷上寫上一些墨字祝福——這算不算是錦上添花？

yellow windows on red clothing skeleton
and patches on with some red patterns and
up-wrote some blessings in ink -
is that the icing on the cake?

或許, 普普通通的從來都不普通。
Devil in the details, perhaps.

Traditional festive lanterns are shaped like an ancient coin. The lanterns are constructed from ice cream sticks, was waved-attached with white gauze paper, and then glueing the clothing with tapioca starch paste. As night falls and candles are lit, the lanterns emit a warm and illuminating a rich atmosphere of joy. 傳統節慶小布燈，名為「方孔兄」燈籠，造型仿古代銅錢，坊間亦稱為「角燈」。燈骨以冰淇淋木棒搭建，覆以白紗紙，再以古法薯粉漿糊牢固粘合，最後裹上紅彩布料。當夜幕低垂，燭火點亮，燈籠散發溫潤柔和的光芒，映照出濃厚的團圓與喜悅氛圍。

數日前一友族女子來電燈坊,問找有沒出售傳統手制的油紙傘,并說明目的是用在國慶遊行里,會伴隨民族服飾, 舞蹈等各種用途。用傘象徵性的描述”naugan”|馬來文譯字”庇護”。粵東話|遮,是為擋掉一切不好。

馬来西亞成立68週年, 祝賀 國慶日快樂。
在”大遮下”盼各族人民和睦共處。共生同榮。

打開的傘, 範圍圓大。
傘骨為枝,糊紙為遮,或大葉。喩開枝散葉,擴大派系。
婚日打紅傘, 除了擋煞,還有衍香火等美好意思。
閩南語|傘散同音。散葉：意為衍派。

大姓氏燈籠的緣起, 也是如是用念,形像,描想…
燈架撐起如打開的傘,裔人同在傘下,同沾福澤。
福蔭庇佑這種想法,其實一直都刻印在峇峇娘惹｜土生華人的掛燈文化里。只是不多言傳。

大樹底下好乘涼,大傘之下好遮陽。同在一起。
