Months at sea. No compass but the stars, no cargo hold but wood and rope and hope. Somewhere below deck, stacked in straw, porcelain waited for a shore it might never see.

Some of it made the voyage. Some of it didn't.

Step into Straits & Oriental Museum and stand before the pieces that survived the deep - fragments of a trade route that shaped Penang long before it was a destination.

Would you have survived the voyage? Tag someone who'd have jumped ship on day one.

One porcelain plate. Five centuries of story.

Swipe through the journey of a single shipwreck cargo piece - loaded at a distant kiln in 1608, lost to the Straits, sealed in silence beneath the sea, carefully raised by conservators, and now resting under gallery light at Straits & Oriental Museum.

It is a small object carrying an enormous story - of trade routes, storms, and the patient hands that bring history back into view.

Artefact of the week.

Pulled from the depths, this blue-and-white bowl has been quietly holding its story for centuries. No maker's mark. No manifest. Just a glaze pattern and a shape that hint at where it once belonged.

Look closely. Which trade route do you think carried it - and where do you think it was headed before the sea claimed it?

Tell us your guess in the comments. We will reveal the story behind it soon.
