Why We Hold on to Our Way of Teaching Art
Step into many art studios and you’ll often see the same scene:
neatly arranged “samples,” walls filled with artworks in matching colors, children’s paintings that look very “professional.”
Everything appears perfect, yet something feels quietly missing.
A child’s painting should be free, unpredictable.
But in the pursuit of “standards,” they are often told to “make it look alike” or “paint it neatly,” guided onto the same track.
Little by little, the paintbrush stops being a tool of exploration and turns into an instrument of repetition.
And the most precious heart—curiosity and creativity—fades away.
This makes me wonder: what is education really for?
If the goal is simply for children to acquire a skill, there are plenty of efficient methods.
But if what we hope for is more than that, if it is independent thinking, the courage to express, the discovery of self,
then we need a slower, more genuine path.
This is why we hold on.
We do not aim for uniform “perfection.”
Instead, we accompany each child to find their own rhythm and unique way of expression.
Even a wobbly line or an unexpected splash of color,
as long as it comes from their heart, deserves to be cherished.
This path may take longer.
But we believe that true growth never takes shortcuts.
When a child learns to trust themselves on paper, when they dare to express their inner world,
what they gain is more than a painting.
It is a sense of calm and confidence in facing life.
So what we hold on to is not only a teaching method,
but a promise to children:
that in this fast-changing world,
they can still protect their truest selves,
and still dare to be different.
Because every unique child deserves to be treated with such warmth and firmness.
但如果我们希望的不止于此,而是独立思考、勇敢表达、发现自我的能力;
