Did you know bonefish, tarpon, and permit are protected in Belize? But what does this really mean?

These three fish make up the Grand Slam: catching all three in one day is a big accomplishment for an angler, and Belize is one of the few places in the world where a Grand Slam can be accomplished!

Because they are most valuable alive in the water, these fish are protected so that they…

• Cannot be killed to be sold for profit.

• Cannot be sold as meal. So they can't be used in sopa de macabi, empanadas de macabi, and no bonefish meatballs, grilled permit, or permit fish fingers.

• If these fish are unintentionally caught in a fish trap, they should be released alive as soon as possible.

• These species must be caught and released alive. Find best practices on our website here: https://www.bonefishtarpontrust.org/catch-and-release/

BTT uses science and local knowledge to identify habitats that are important to the Grand Slam species, so we can then work to improve the management and enforcement of fishing regulations in these areas. These habitats include pre-spawning and spawning locations, juvenile habitats, and feeding grounds. Improvements to management and enforcement will prevent illegal fishing, illegal consumption of these species, and unwise development that damages these habitats, such as the construction of over-the-water structures, mangrove cutting, and dredging.
