Three Josephs. Two are dead. One is still making a mess in his studio.😂

Joseph Beuys. Joseph Cornell. Joseph Bennett.

These two Josephs have been important muses for me for years.

All three of us have/had a thing for objects, for the overlooked and discarded, and for the stories that objects can hold.

I often think about their work when I'm sitting at my workbench...

And I'm curious: Who is one artist whose work has changed the way YOU see the world?

kitchen chattel, it’s dangerous inside / es peligroso adentro

This work was created in the days following the death of assemblage artist and activist , whose work has deeply influenced my own.

It is an homage to the enslaved women who labored inside plantation homes — living under the constant gaze of the enslavers. I wonder if it was more dangerous inside the house than in the fields?

More intimate.
More unpredictable.
More vulnerable.

The small red berry references the practice of their enslavers: marking the dishes and utensils with a red dot for only Black people to use.

The word chattel was the legal term to classify enslaved human beings as property rather than people.

Esta obra fue creada en los días posteriores al fallecimiento de la artista de ensamblaje y activista Betye Saar, cuya obra ha influido profundamente en la mía. Es un homenaje a las mujeres esclavizadas que trabajaban dentro de las casas de las plantaciones, viviendo bajo la mirada constante de sus esclavizadores. Me pregunto si era más peligroso dentro de la casa que en los campos.
Más íntimo.
Más impredecible.
Más vulnerable.

La pequeña baya roja hace referencia a la práctica de algunos esclavizadores de marcar con un punto rojo los platos y utensilios que las personas negras tenían permitido usar.

La palabra chattel era el término legal utilizado para clasificar a los seres humanos esclavizados como propiedad y no como personas.
