🙏Matthew 20:1-16
Jesus said to his disciples,
"This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A landowner went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay the workers a salary of a silver coin for the day, and sent them to his vineyard.
"He went out again at about nine in the morning, and seeing others idle in the square, he said to them:
'You, too, go to my vineyard and I will
pay you what is just.'
So they went.
"The owner went out at midday and again at three in the afternoon, and he did the same. Finally, he went out at the last working hour - it was the eleventh - and he saw others standing there.
So, he said to them:
'Why do you stay idle the whole day?'
They answered:
'Because no one has hired us.'
The master said:
'Go and work in my vineyard.'
"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager:
'Call the workers and pay them
their wage, beginning with the last
and ending with the first.'
Those who had come to work at the eleventh hour turned up and were given a denarius each (a silver coin). When it was the turn of the first, they thought they would receive more. But they, too, received a denarius each. So, on receiving it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
"They said:
'These last hardly worked an hour, yet you have treated them the same as us who have endured the day's burden and heat.'
The owner said to one of them:
'Friend, I have not been unjust to you. Did we not agree on a denarius a day?
So take what is yours and go.
I want to give to the last the same as I give to you. Don't I have the right to do as I please with my money?
Why are you envious when I am kind?'
"So will it be: the last will
be first, the first will be last."

“I myself will seek out my sheep”
This is one of the most striking passages from the prophet Ezekiel, likely because it places an unsparing critique in the mouth of Yahweh—directed at those He calls the shepherds of Israel. In other words, those He had entrusted with the special care of His people.
Given the context in which it was written, there is no doubt as to the intended recipients of this passionate lament from God.
How many images come to mind regarding what it means to “shepherd the sheep”!
And yet, how far removed from this are the shepherds who are busy shepherding only themselves!
The oracle is truly stirring in its power. Bringing the Word into the here and now—where it becomes flesh—leads us to ask how it applies to us. To those officially considered shepherds within the People of God—the Church.
But it also applies to anyone exercising responsibility in any sphere—especially those roles that entail the ability to act upon and directly influence people's lives.
Let us avoid the temptation to apply this reading solely to those in charge of the Church, world governments, or the many public institutions (though they certainly bear a great responsibility). Instead, let us humbly acknowledge our own smaller responsibilities and the way we exercise them in our dealings with others.
And let us ask the Lord to help us live out these roles with attitudes the exact opposite of those described by the prophet.
For even though the shepherds failed to answer the Lord’s call, we know that He Himself seeks us out and has become our Shepherd. Praying with the verses of the psalm allows us to enter into a dynamic contrary to that of Israel’s shepherds, and to “rest” in the Lord who guides us.
“The last will be first, and the first will be last.”
Jesus concludes the parable with one of his most well-known paradoxical sayings. In reality, it stands in stark contrast to what—deep down—resides within most human beings. We find it hard to believe. As Dolores Aleixandre notes, Jesus introduces a dynamic completely different from that of the world—one where the “win-lose” game operates in the exact opposite way to what we imagine, believe, and what drives most of our actions.
The story of the landowner recounted in today’s Gospel defies all the laws of human logic.
We fully understand what the landowner does, yet we do not agree with it. It even strikes us as unfair. And we would have little trouble finding convincing reasons—even ones grounded in sound teaching—to argue that someone who worked eight hours should not be paid the same as someone who arrived just as the workday was ending.
I am not familiar with the many interpretations of this text offered by great biblical scholars, but—since the Word is written for everyone—there is no doubt that we who read it can find an application that helps us go “deeper.”
I offer two suggestions:
• Even if we have become distracted along the way, what matters is “being there” when He arrives. Even if it is the final hour, we will have our chance. And this is deeply comforting and liberating…
• The Kingdom is a gift.
We do not win it through our own efforts. If someone considers themselves to have been at work since the first hour, they can give thanks for having “been found” early in the morning… This earns no merit, but it can bring the immense joy of spending one’s life working *with Him*.
