St John's Co-Cathedral This is the official page of St John’s Co-Cathedral, a gem of Baroque art & architecture built as the conventual church for the Knights of St John

Commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière as the conventual church of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John and designed by the celebrated Maltese military architect Gerolamo Cassar, St John’s Co-Cathedral stands as a unique monument of international importance. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Order. Today, St John’s is also a venue

for cultural events and is one of the most popular cultural attractions visited by tourists in Malta. It is administered by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, which was set up in 2001 to ensure the church's and museum’s conservation. Closures

The Museum is currently closed for its extension and refurbishment. The 'Meet Caravaggio' docu-drama is temporarily unavailable for viewing due to works in the area. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Iċ-ċelebrazzjoni saret f’post ta’ tifsira partikolari, għaliex fl-Oratorju insibu wkoll Il-Qtugħ ir-Ras ta’ San Ġwann Battista ta’ Caravaggio, pittura li tirrapreżenta proprju l-episodju mill-ħajja tal-patrun tal-Konkatidral li fakkar fid-29 ta' Awwissu 🕯️ 🙏

🇬🇧 Last Saturday’s morning mass was celebrated in the Oratory dedicated to St John the Baptist, as the Church commemorated the Martyrdom of the saint.

The setting for this celebration holds particular significance, as the Oratory is also home to Caravaggio’s The Beheading of St John the Baptist, depicting the very episode in the life of the Co-Cathedral’s patron saint commemorated on the 29th of August🕯️ 🙏

Maħduma mill-ġebla tal-franka Maltija u mżejna bis-salib familjari bi tmien ponot, dan ix-xogħol ġie maħluq minn wieħed mill-membri tat-tim tagħna bħala żieda riċenti fil-Caravaggio Wing, maħsub biex tiżdied is-sigurtà għall-viżitaturi li jgħaddu minn dan l-ispazju.

⚒️ Iddisinjata u minquxa fil-workshop ta’ Mario, din iż-żieda ġdida tlaqqa’ flimkien is-sengħa u l-għan prattiku.

Every detail begins with an idea. With visitor safety in mind, the process began with the first designs on paper and continued through to the final details carved in stone ✏️ 🪨

Crafted from Maltese limestone and featuring the familiar eight-pointed cross, the piece was created by one of our own team as a recent addition to the Caravaggio Wing, designed to make visitors’ way through the space safer.

⚒️ Designed and carved in Mario’s workshop, this new feature brings together craftsmanship and purpose.

F’din il-pittura, li tinsab fil-Kappella tal-Madonna ta’ Filermos, magħrufa wkoll bħala l-Kappella tas-Sagrament, naraw lill-Verġni Marija mdawla b’dawl divin u mdawra bis-sħab, kerubini u anġli, f’rappreżentazzjoni serena tat-Tlugħ tagħha fis-Sema.

🇬🇧 ⛪ Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorating the Virgin Mary being taken up, body and soul, into heavenly glory.

Depicted here is a painting found within the Chapel of the Madonna of Philermos, also known as the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Bathed in divine light and surrounded by clouds, cherubs and angels, the Virgin Mary is portrayed in a serene vision of her Assumption.

Above, the coat of arms of the Order of St John is set against a deep blue architectural backdrop, where gilded stars evoke the heavens and complete this celestial scene ✨

🇲🇹 Il-Fondazzjoni tal-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann b’sodisfazzjon iffinanzjat ir-restawr tal-pittura tas-seklu sbatax ta’ Santa Luċija u Sant’Agata, xogħol Joannes de la Preite. Il-programm estensiv ta’ konservazzjoni twettaq mit-tim ta’ restawraturi tal-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann.

Wara li r-restawr tlesta f’Jannar 2026, il-pittura ġiet ittrasportata b’attenzjoni lejn il-Kampus tal-Universita fil-Belt Valletta, fejn qed tiġi esposta temporanjament qabel ma eventwalment tirritorna fil-post permanenti tagħha f’kappella tal-Knisja tal-Ġiżwiti fil-Belt Valletta.

Dan il-filmat jaqbad stadju importanti minn dan il-vjaġġ - u l-attenzjoni, l-għarfien tekniku u d-dedikazzjoni meħtieġa biex kapulavur li jkun għadu kif ġie restawrat jiġi ttrasportat b’mod sigur.

🤝 Din kienet kisba importanti għall-ħarsien tal-wirt artistiku ta’ Malta, li saret possibbli permezz tal-impenn kontinwu tal-Fondazzjoni biex tissalvagwardja opri tal-arti lil hinn mill-ħitan tal-Konkatidral.

🇬🇧 The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation proudly sponsored the restoration of the seventeenth-century painting of St Lucy and St Agatha by Joannes de la Preite, with the extensive conservation programme carried out by its talented team of restorers at St John’s Co-Cathedral.

Following the completion of the restoration in January 2026, the painting was carefully transported to the Valletta Campus, where it remains temporarily displayed before its eventual return to its permanent home in the chapel of the Jesuits’ Church in Valletta.

This video captures an important stage of that journey - and the careful hands, expertise and dedication required to move a newly restored masterpiece safely.

🤝 A significant achievement for the preservation of Malta’s artistic heritage, made possible through the Foundation’s continued commitment to protecting works of art beyond the walls of St John’s.

🇲🇹 Il-Fondazzjoni tal-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann tilqa’ lill-President il-ġdid tagħha!

Wara li s-sena amministrattiva tal-Fondazzjoni ġiet fi tmiemha fil-31 ta’ Lulju 2026, il-Prof. Mons. Emmanuel Agius beda jibda jaqdi l-kariga ta’ President tal-Fondazzjoni tal-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann fl-1 ta’ Awwissu 2026. Din hija r-raba’ darba li qed jinħatar f’din il-kariga.

F’isem l-impjegati kollha tal-Fondazzjoni, nirringrazzjaw lill-Kol. Dr Mark Mallia għat-tmexxija, id-dedikazzjoni u l-appoġġ tiegħu matul il-presidenza tiegħu tul is-sena li għaddiet. Il-kontribut tiegħu lejn il-Fondazzjoni u l-missjoni tagħha kien apprezzat ferm.

Nilqgħu bi pjaċir lill-Prof. Mons. Agius u nawgurawlu l-isbaħ xewqat hekk kif jibda jaqdi dan ir-rwol importanti. Inħarsu ’l quddiem lejn sena oħra ta’ ħidma importanti flimkien biex inkomplu nħarsu, nippreservaw u naqsmu l-wirt reliġjuż, storiku u artistiku straordinarju tal-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann.

🇬🇧 The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation welcomes its new President!

Following the close of the Foundaton’s administrative year on 31 July 2026, Prof. Mgr Emmanuel Agius took office as President of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation on 1 August 2026. This marks the fourth occasion on which he has been appointed to this role.

On behalf of all the Foundation’s staff, we thank Col. Dr Mark Mallia for his leadership, dedication and support throughout his presidency over the past year. His contribution to the Foundation and its mission has been greatly valued and deeply appreciated.

We warmly welcome Prof. Mgr Agius and extend our very best wishes to him as he takes on this important role. We look forward to another meaningful year of working together to preserve, safeguard and share the extraordinary religious, historical and artistic legacy of St John’s Co-Cathedral.

Għal din l-okkażjoni, il-quddiesa ġiet iċċelebrata fil-kappella ddedikata lilu: il-Kappella tal-Lingwa ta’ Kastilja, Leon u l-Portugall.

Il-kappella hija mżejna b’pittura mill-isbaħ fuq l-altar li turi lil San Ġakbu, flimkien ma’ lunetti li juru xeni minn ħajtu, kollha mpittra minn Mattia Preti ✨

🇬🇧 Today, we celebrate the liturgical feast of St James!

To mark the occasion, mass was celebrated in the chapel dedicated to him: the Chapel of the Langue of Castile, Leon and Portugal.

The chapel is adorned with a magnificent altarpiece depicting St James, together with lunettes illustrating scenes from his life, all painted by Mattia Preti ✨
