The second edition of the Malta Biennale came to a close yesterday evening, during a ceremony that was held at Fort St Elmo, in Valletta. The closing ceremony featured a live orchestra, with a five-piece repertoire juxtaposed by speeches by Heritage Malta (HM) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Noel Zammit, Malta Biennale 2026 President and HM Chairman, Mario Cutajar, and H.E. the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono.

During the closing ceremony, the last Maltese Falcon Award recipient was also announced – the winner of the People’s Choice award being Halil Altindere, whose works Star Wars: Knights of Malta vs Ottoman Drones (2026) and Star Wars: Royal Hunt (2023) were on show at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta.

Considering each vessel as a territory of the state whose flag it flies, last Sunday, Núria Güell and Rosa Casado invited audiences on an ‘all-inclusive cruise’ around the world. Having departed from the Grand Harbour on a traditional tourist passenger vessel, audience members were given explanation by a local tour guide on how territorial notions such as ‘the rule of law’, citizenship and homeland operate differently at sea, as well as to the ‘exceptions’ implied by the legal framework of these countries. ��Innocent Passage was an artist-led performance by Núria Güell and Rosa Casado as part of the international exhibition of the Malta Biennale 2026.

Nothing is Clear is the title of the inaugural exhibition at Axis Art Gallery .

Conceived as a reflection on contemporary socio-political conditions shaped through multiple, intersecting positions, the exhibition is curated by the gallery’s Founding Artistic Director,Elyse Tonna. It brings together Maltese or Malta-based artists whose practices engage with ambiguity, continuity and the persistence of various forces across time.

Rather than proposing linear narratives, the exhibition acknowledges complexity as an intrinsic condition of the

Thematic Pavilion: Troy Pavilion

The Trojan Pavilion, curated by the Çanakkale Biennial Initiative with the Troy Excavation Directorate, brings together artworks that explore the cultural, historical, and symbolic resonance of Troy. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a cornerstone of Mediterranean imagination, Troy exists between mitos and logos – between epic narrative and archaeological inquiry. The pavilion gathers international artists whose practices question knowledge systems, reimagine ancient worlds, and reflect on contemporary ethical concerns.
