The Long Ward, now part of the Mediterranean Conference Centre, was once the main ward of the Station Hospital. During the First World War it formed part of Malta’s wartime hospital network, linked to the island’s reputation as the Nurse of the Mediterranean.

From stone lookouts to concrete strongpoints. The Knights built towers to see first and signal fast. The British built pillboxes to defend against invasion. Along the Maltese coastline, a legacy of fortifications still remains.

After the First World War, the former Station Hospital was handed over to the civil authorities and became Malta’s Police Headquarters. Under Commissioner Harry Bamford, appointed in 1919, the building was adapted to strengthen and professionalise the force.
Part of the Grand Magazine Ward was converted into stables for the Mounted Police, and the old hospital began a new chapter in maintaining order rather than healing the wounded.

Built in 1574 as La Sacra Infermeria, this imposing building later served as the Station Hospital during the British period. During the First World War, it formed part of Malta’s network of military hospitals caring for the wounded, contributing to the island’s reputation as the Nurse of the Mediterranean. Today, it is known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Around 60 AD, Paul the Apostle was travelling to Rome under arrest when his ship was driven off course by a violent storm and ran aground on Malta. All aboard survived, and the islanders offered shelter and unexpected kindness to the exhausted travellers.
As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, Paul remained on Malta for three months, healing the sick and preaching among the local population. Christian tradition places Publius among the converts, marking the moment when a faith first took root on the island.

In 1565, the Great Siege of Malta saw the Order of St John, alongside Maltese defenders, withstand a four-month Ottoman siege. The defence did not end Ottoman power, but it checked Ottoman momentum in the western Mediterranean and reshaped Malta’s strategic standing. In its aftermath, the Order consolidated its military and hospitaller role, and resolved to establish a new fortified capital. That decision led directly to the foundation of Valletta in 1566.

In 1566, Italian military engineer Francesco Laparelli da Cortona was sent to Malta by Pope Pius V to design a new fortified city. Valletta was conceived as a Renaissance planned city, built on a rectilinear street grid, with purpose-built auberges for the Order of St John, grand churches, and a defence system composed of layered fortifications. Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar continued the work, shaping and embellishing the city as construction progressed. Today, Valletta stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

La Sacra Infermeria, built by the Knights of St John in 1574, once housed one of Europe’s longest hospital wards. The Order’s mission to care for the sick was as vital as its military defence. In times of crisis, the infirmary could accommodate over 900 patients. Today, these vaulted halls recall a legacy of healing at the heart of Valletta’s history.

Fort St Elmo is a star-shaped fortress at the tip of Valletta. Built by the Knights of St John, it played a key role in the defence of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565. The original structure was largely destroyed, but the fort was rebuilt and expanded in the years that followed. Today, it houses the National War Museum and remains one of Malta’s most significant military landmarks.

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Malta’s best-preserved prehistoric underground temple. Hewn from limestone rock, its intricate chambers once served as a burial ground. The site’s acoustics, especially in the so-called Oracle Chamber, have long puzzled researchers. Ritual, sound, and the dead converge here, offering glimpses into an ancient world still not fully understood.
