A group photograph showing personnel of No. 38 Squadron at RAF Luqa in 1960, during the squadron’s long association with Malta and its vital air-sea rescue role.

No. 38 Squadron arrived in Malta from Falconara, Italy, on 5 July 1945, tasked with taking over the full air-sea rescue operations for the Maltese islands. The squadron was initially equipped with Vickers Wellington Mk XIVs, before moving on to Vickers Warwicks Mk I. On 15 July 1946, the unit converted to the Avro Lancaster Mk III, and in October 1953 it entered the jet age of long-range maritime rescue operations with the Avro Shackleton.

38 Squadron remained based at RAF Luqa for two decades, becoming an important part of Malta's post-war aviation history. On 30 October 1965, the squadron transferred from Luqa to RAF Hal Far, where it continued its air-sea rescue duties.

A Piaggio P.166DL3-SEM, military serial MM25177/GF-07, of the Italian Guardia di Finanza, photographed by Anthony Spiteri during the 1996 Malta International Airshow.

The P.166 was a versatile twin-engine aircraft, and the Guardia di Finanza operated the type for maritime patrol, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, particularly in support of its duties over Italy's territorial waters.

A close-up view of the engine of Lockheed C-130K XV212, with C-130K XV213 in the background, photographed at RAF Luqa on 30 October 1976. Both aircraft were serving with No. 24 Squadron RAF at the time, while XV213 later transferred to No. 48 Squadron.

XV213 was delivered to the RAF on 2 November 1967 and was later converted into a C.1K tanker. In March 2000, it was sold to the Sri Lanka Air Force, receiving the serial SCH-881.

During its long career, XV213 accumulated an impressive 22,000 flight hours and more than 15,000 landings before eventually being placed in storage at Katunayake Air Base, Sri Lanka.

Westland Wessex HU.5 XT456 of 845 Naval Air Squadron, photographed at RAF Luqa in June 1974 while operating from the amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark.

The Wessex HU.5 was a versatile naval helicopter used by the Royal Navy for troop transport, logistics, search and rescue, and support of amphibious operations. 845 NAS specialised in supporting Royal Marines and amphibious warfare, with its Wessex helicopters providing essential transport and operational support.

The KC-135 Stratotanker has been a cornerstone of United States Air Force aerial refuelling operations since the late 1950s, allowing fighter and bomber aircraft to extend their range and endurance without landing. The 100th Air Refueling Wing, based at RAF Mildenhall in the UK, played an important role in supporting US and NATO air operations across Europe and beyond.

Vickers Valiant B.1 XD819 of No. 207 Squadron RAF landing at Luqa in 1959. The Vickers Valiant was Britain's first operational V-bomber and formed part of the RAF's strategic nuclear deterrent during the early Cold War.

No. 207 Squadron operated the type from RAF Marham and deployed its Valiants to Malta during the Suez Crisis in 1957. Malta also served as an important stopover for RAF Valiants. In March 1957, two aircraft passed through Malta while en route to Ghana (then the Gold Coast) to take part in celebrations marking Ghana's independence.

Today's History in Picture

English Electric Canberra B.2 WD993 of No. 10 Squadron RAF, undergoing repairs at Ta' Qali following a wheels-up landing on 10 January 1957. The aircraft is still carrying the distinctive yellow and black markings associated with the Suez Crisis (Operation Musketeer), indicating its recent operational use during the Anglo-French-Israeli intervention in Egypt.

The Canberra can be seen undergoing repairs behind the hangar that today forms part of the Malta Basketball Association Pavilion, a short distance from the site where the Malta Aviation Museum now stands.

Blackburn Buccaneers XW543 and XW544 of No. 15 Squadron RAF taxi towards the runway at RAF Luqa in 1973, with their wings still folded.

Originally designed for the Royal Navy, the Blackburn Buccaneer featured folding wings to maximise space aboard aircraft carriers. The RAF made excellent use of this naval feature, allowing Buccaneers to be parked much closer together in congested areas such as Park 4 at RAF Luqa.

An English Electric Canberra B.2, WJ603, of No. 85 Squadron RAF, captured landing at RAF Luqa in October 1975.

Although the Canberra B.2 was originally developed as a light bomber, by the 1970s many aircraft had been adapted for a variety of secondary roles, including radar calibration and electronic support duties. WJ603 served with No. 85 Squadron, which was responsible for providing radar calibration and air defence support to the RAF.
