Yayoi Kusama, 1929–2026

Few artists have transformed a deeply personal visual language into an experience shared by millions quite like Yayoi Kusama.

Behind imagery that became some of the most recognisable in contemporary art was a practice rooted in something far deeper — a lifelong exploration of repetition, perception, infinity and self-obliteration.

Today, we remember an artist whose vision crossed generations, cultures and disciplines, and whose unmistakable language has left a permanent mark on contemporary art.

Thank you, Yayoi, for showing us just how powerful art can be.

Your universe will continue to live on. ♾️

Culture is Past Art is Future, a series of block prints by Ryan Falzon for Romegas Hotel

Created in response to Malta’s European Capital of Culture title, this body of work questions the treatment and commodification of cultural heritage. Through woodcut and transfer prints, Falzon challenges the tendency to prioritise preservation and nostalgia over experimentation and contemporary artistic practice.

The works reflect on the relationship between Malta’s cultural past and its evolving identity, proposing art not simply as a record of what has been, but as a catalyst for critical thinking, experimentation, and what is yet to come.

Loose Lips Sink Ships, a commissioned work by Kane Calì for

Inspired by the hidden histories embedded within the palazzo, Calì’s stainless steel intervention draws from the discovery of what is believed to have once been a concealed passageway within the building’s walls. Echoing whispers, secrecy, and untold encounters, the work reflects on the narratives that architecture silently carries through time.

Blending contemporary materiality with historical imagination, the piece becomes a dialogue between Valletta’s layered past and present.

Ġenna tal-Art, a painting by Rebecca Bonaci Rebecca Bonaci for Romegas Hotel

Through a romanticised vision of the Maltese islands, Bonaci reflects on national identity, belonging, and the possibility of coexistence within an increasingly interconnected world.

Balancing themes of cultural preservation and openness, the work imagines a hopeful, utopian space where differences dissolve into empathy, mutual respect, and collective care. Figures, landscapes, and emotion merge into a dreamlike composition that speaks to both personal intimacy and wider social realities.

While rooted in contemporary tensions surrounding identity and place, ‘Ġenna tal-Art’ ultimately holds onto optimism, offering a quiet reminder that harmony, however idealised, remains something worth striving toward.

This work was exhibited during the maltabiennale.art 2024 at The Grand Masters Palace.

Over the past decade, MARIE has evolved alongside the artists, collectors, businesses, institutions and projects we have worked with. What began within the framework of a gallery has gradually expanded beyond it ,shaped by curatorial work, private collections, acquisitions, commissions and long-term relationships with art and the artworld in Malta and internationally.

The art market has evolved. The ways people discover, acquire, collect and engage with art are becoming increasingly fluid, and the traditional boundaries between gallery, advisor and curator are shifting with them.

This next chapter reflects where our work has naturally taken us.

MARIE brings together curatorial knowledge with an understanding of the market, working with collectors and organisations to build, develop and position collections over time. Exhibitions, artistic collaborations and curatorial projects remain part of our practice — but within a wider way of working with art.

After ten years, this feels less like becoming something new and more like giving a clearer identity to what MARIE has become.
