MICAS

MICAS Malta International Contemporary Art Space MICAS is a Government of Malta infrastructural legacy project for the Culture and the Arts sector.

Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) is intended to strengthen Malta’s cultural infrastructure by providing a platform for contemporary art and internationalisation. With its launch, Malta is about to take a great step forward and become a proactive player in the contemporary art world. Scheduled to open in 2024, MICAS will not only become a showcase for local contemporary artists b

ut will also engage with international institutions to present groundbreaking works by acclaimed artists from all over the world. MICAS aims to positively energise Malta’s cultural ecology and impact that of the Euro-Mediterranean region it inhabits. The MICAS mission is to be an advocate of contemporary art by raising public awareness to the significance of the visual arts in contemporary life, and by bringing to the forefront the way art and artists help mediate and interpret the world we live in. MICAS will be realised through state funded restoration of historical fortifications and its galleries, and will be delivered in 2023. This project is part-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund – European Structural and Investment Funds 2014-2020.

Għall-artist Reggie Burrows Hodges, il-kelma Maltija "Mela" tfisser il-bidu ta' storja jew ħsieb. U sa fl-aħħar, il-wirja l-ġdida tiegħu, 'Mela' waslet.

Imma kif kulħadd jaf, f'Malta, ‘mela’ hija kelma li nużaw ħafna drabi f’gurnata – biex naqblu, għal bidu ġdid, jew sempliċement biex inżommu konverżazzjoni għaddejja. Mela, inti kemm-il darba tgħid 'mela' kuljum?

Ejja u esperjenza l-wirja 'Mela' u skopri xi tfisser din il-kelma f’ għajnejn Hodges.

The Maltese word 'mela', for artist Reggie Burrows Hodges, it means the beginning of a story or a thought. And finally, the beginning of his new exhibition, '𝑴𝙚𝒍𝙖', has arrived.

But, as every Maltese person knows, mela is a word we use countless times a day – for agreement, for a fresh start, or just to keep a conversation flowing. So, mela, how many times do you say 'mela' in a day? 😄

Come and experience the exhibition '𝑴𝙚𝒍𝙖' and discover what the word means through Hodges's eyes.

F’dan il-Jum Internazzjonali tal-Mużewijiet, niċċelebraw kif il-mużewijiet jgħaqqdu dinja maqsuma—billi joħolqu spazju fejn vuċijiet diversi jinstemgħu u l-komunitajiet jingħaqdu.

Fil-MICAS, il-wirja li għadna kif ftaħna, ‘𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀:𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖' għandha aktar minn 30 pittura ġdida li qatt ma ntwerew qabel, maħluqa minn Hodges fiż-żmien li qatta’ Malta. Dawn il-pitturi huma mifruxa fuq l-erba’ sulari ewlenin tal-gallariji tal-mużew, fosthom l-akbar tila fil-karriera tiegħu. ‘Mela’ tirrappreżenta l-aktar xogħol ambizzjuż ta’ Hodges fil-karriera tiegħu sa issa.

Ejja ara djalogu bejn artist u gżira jinbidel f’arti.

This International Museum Day, we celebrate how museums unite a divided world—by creating spaces where diverse voices are heard and communities come together.

At MICAS, our newly opened exhibition ‘𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀:𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖' features over 30 never-before-seen paintings by Hodges, created during his time in Malta. Spanning over 30 new paintings across the museum’s four main gallery floors, including the largest canvases of his career, ‘𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖’ represents Hodges’s most ambitious body of work to date.

Come see where dialogue between an artist and an island becomes art.

Awguri lil Vince Briffa!
Vince Briffa

Illum, niċċelebraw lil dan l-artist Malti interdixxiplinarju li jispikka tant, b’xogħlu mifrux minn vidjo, għal pittura, għal installazzjonijet, u esibit lokalment u internazzjonalment.

Xogħol ta’ Briffa ġie esebit fil-wirja tal-MICAS, ‘L-Ispazju li Ngħammru Fih’ (2025), flimkien ma’ xogħlijiet ta’ artisti Maltin oħra, li flimkien offrew ħsieb ġdid ta’ kif jistgħu jkunu l-ispazji tal-mużew.

F’din il-wirja, Briffa għammar fi spazju, “li servieni bħala l-punt tat-tluq u d-destinazzjoni, waqt li interaġġixxejt mas-sensi kollha u wżint kollox bejn dawn iż-żewġ punti. Xi drabi, posti – jew aħjar, l-ispazju li nokkupa waqt li nkun qed inpitter – huwa wieħed li jintrabat mal-istrument, kemm fiżikament kif ukoll intellettwalment, u jipprovdili l-possibiltajiet kollha immaġinabbli fil-mod li ningaġġa miegħu.”

Għal aktar informazzjoni dwar il-wirja 'L-Ispazju li Ngħammru Fih', tista’ żżur https://micas.art/product/the-space-we-inhabit/

Happy Birthday to Vince Briffa!

Today, we celebrate this prominent interdisciplinary Maltese artist, whose work spans to video, painting, sculpture, and installations, exhibited both locally and internationally.

Briffa was part of MICAS's exhibition The Space We Inhabit (2025), where he, alongside other Maltese artists, offered a powerful reimagining of the MICAS spaces.

In this exhibition, Briffa inhabited the space, "serving as both a beginning and an end point, interacting with all senses and considering everything in between. In some ways, my place—or rather, the space that I occupy over the course of my painting practice—is one in which I connect with the medium, both physically and intellectually, providing me with all of the possibilities imaginable in the way I engage with it."
