🌍 United Nations Day 2025 🇺🇳— Celebrating 80 Years of the UN 🌿

24 October 2025 marks 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, an institution born from the hope that humanity could build lasting peace through global cooperation.

At U Thant House, we are proud to honour the legacy of U Thant, the third Secretary-General of the UN — a man whose quiet strength and moral imagination helped guide the world through some of its most turbulent times. His vision of peace, justice, and shared humanity remains as relevant as ever.

As we reflect on this milestone, we invite you to visit U Thant House — open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — to learn more about his life, his leadership, and his enduring message for a better world.

📖 You can also pick up a copy of Peacemaker: U Thant and the Forgotten Quest for a Just World by Thant Myint-U, available at U Thant House. All proceeds from book sales go directly toward supporting our museum and our educational programmes.

Now, more than ever, the ideals of the United Nations — peace and international cooperation — remain essential to our shared future 💙

“Peacemaker : U Thant and the Forgotten Quest for a Just World” Now Available at U Thant House – Starting 19th September

We are pleased to announce that a limited number of the new book Peacemaker: U Thant and the Forgotten Quest for a Just World by Dr Thant Myint-U will be available for purchase at the U Thant House, starting 19th September.

Based on archives never before examined, this biography offers a fresh perspective on some of the twentieth century’s defining events — from the Congo Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Vietnam War, the India-Pakistan Wars, the Nigerian Biafra War, the Six Day War.

More than a diplomatic history, Peacemaker explores U Thant’s vision of himself as a “planetary citizen” and his early concerns for the global environment. It also portrays a transformative moment when newly independent countries of Africa and Asia reshaped the United Nations, and when, for a brief time, a truly global peace seemed within reach.

All proceeds from the sale of the book at U Thant House will go towards supporting our museum and education program and keeping U Thant House open.

We also accept pre-orders.

Visitors who purchase the book at U Thant House on museum open days are welcome to explore our exhibition free of charge on the day of purchase.

Delivery within Yangon can be arranged for an extra fee.

We hope you will enjoy the read!

Our Story

U Thant House is a centre of learning and discussion on global history and global challenges and their relevance for Myanmar’s future. It is also a museum dedicated to the life and work of U Thant, the third Secretary-General of the United Nations and is located at his former residence in Yangon.

U Thant House underwent major restoration work in 2013-15 as it was virtually abandoned and in ruins when it was re-found in 2012. The house opened to the public with a permanent exhibition “U Thant: His Life and Legacy” in January 2016 and has since then attracted thousands of visitors per year, an overwhelmingly larger portion of whom are young Myanmar people.

U Thant House is operating as a Myanmar registered non-governmental organization, regularly convening lectures and seminars. Distinguished visitors and speakers have included former President of Myanmar U Htin Kyaw, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Ministers from India, France, and the Netherlands, and Shri Gopal Gandhi, former Governor of West Bengal and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.
