Watercolor is a medium of light and air, but its beauty is matched by its fragility. A well-preserved watercolor can last for centuries, but only if the environment is well enough curated. To ensure your watercolor artwork retains its beauty and vibrancy, here is some advice on keeping it:

● Watercolor pigments are prone to “fugitive” fading. An UV filtration is not a luxury but a requirement. Avoid any direct or reflected sunlight, preferably, light levels for watercolors should be strictly limited to 50 Lux or less.
● Paper absorbs moisture very fast. Keep your collection in a climate-controlled space to prevent warping and “foxing” (mold-related spotting). Mold risk increases significantly when humidity surpasses 65%. Strictly maintain the 45% – 55% relative humidity baseline.
● Ensure a physical gap exists between the art and the glass. Contact with glazing leads to condensation damage. Use only 100% cotton rag mats to prevent acidic migration.
● Never use liquid cleaners near the frame. A watercolor’s surface should never be touched — even the humidity from your breath can over time affect it.

Practice “Hands-Off” Maintenance🧽

Our skin carries natural oils and salts that can permanently stain unvarnished surfaces or delicate paper. Always handle art by the frame or use clean cotton gloves. When cleaning, skip the chemical sprays - use a soft, dry natural-hair brush or a very porous bread to softly remove dust off it.

Know When to Call a Professional🎨

Routine dusting is fine, but structural issues require an expert. If you notice paint flaking, mold growth, or “foxing” (brown spots on paper), consult a professional conservator rather than attempting a DIY fix.

Prioritize Environmental Stability🌡️⛲️
Fine art thrives in consistency, rapid fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause materials like canvas, wood, and paper to expand and contract, which can lead to warping or cracking. Maintain a consistent room temperature of 20°C – 22°C and a relative air humidity between 45% – 55%. Keep your works away from vents, radiators, and exterior-facing walls.

Manage Light Exposure💡
UV radiation is the primary cause of irreversible fading and material breakdown. Avoid hanging significant works in direct sunlight. For high-value pieces, always specify museum-grade glass or acrylic with 99% UV filtration to block “photochemical” damage.

Demand Archival Materials🏛️
What happens behind the frame is just as important as the art itself. Ensure your framer uses 100% acid-free, archival-quality mats and backing boards. Lower-quality materials contain acids that migrate into the artwork, causing yellowing and brittle edges over time.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the «Meet the Artists» evening on April 29th🙌🏻
It was a wonderful experience hosting such a vibrant gathering at Hôpital Kirchberg to celebrate the unbridled spirit and energy of «The Year of Crazy?;) Horse». The evening offered a unique opportunity for guests to engage directly with Oxana Berezhna and Silvia Karamfilova, gaining personal insight into their painting collections that feature such unimaginable and extravagant horses. Our curator, Oksana Polyanska, led a guided tour that explored how these two female artists use vibrant, expressive brushwork to capture the untamed spirit and equestrian grace that defines this series🐴🐎

Meet the Artist: Alena Gastaldi🌟

Alena Gastaldi is a classically trained figurative and plein air painter based in Luxembourg. Academic painting, drawing, and sculpture formed an integral part of her six-year architecture studies in her hometown of Kostroma, Russia, which she continued to develop after graduation. She later spent a year studying with the internationally renowned watercolourist Thomas M. Schaller and is currently a regular student at Studio Escalier in France, a private school known for its rigorous academic curriculum, where she has studied under Nicole Michelle Tully and Tobias M. Hall, accomplished American painters.
Her work captures the character of contemporary life through direct observation, preserving fleeting moments and cultural narratives with a strong foundation in traditional technique.
The majority of the works in this exhibition are created en plein air – painted outdoors, in a tradition that has been central to artistic practice for generations or developed from smaller observational studies. Painted directly from life, these works translate the complexity of a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional surface, balancing colour, structure, and atmosphere. This process unfolds in the midst of everyday activity, where movement, sound, and distraction become part of the act of observation.
She regularly participates in plein air competitions in Ireland, where her work has been regularly recognised by juries and colleagues. Alena’s work is held in private collections worldwide, from Australia, China and Singapore to Europe and the United States.
