Moving through deserts, suburbs, and urban edges, Koen van den Broek transforms roads and overlooked surfaces into cinematic compositions. “Paris–Texas” recalls Wim Wenders’s film, yet shifts beyond reference to reflect on how landscapes are seen through memory and experience.

Rather than documenting specific places, van den Broek focuses on roads, shadows, reflections, and markings as traces of human presence. These familiar elements are reorganized into paintings that balance abstraction and recognition. The final gallery unfolds like a suspended film scene, inviting viewers to look again at the ground beneath our feet. Here, the landscape becomes what van den Broek calls “the skin of the earth.”

쿤 반 덴 브룩은 사막과 교외, 도시 외곽을 이동하며 마주한 도로와 땅의 표면을 영화의 한 장면처럼 다시 구성한다. 4m 길이의 대형 회화 “Paris–Texas”는 빔 벤더스의 영화를 떠올리게 하지만, 단순한 인용을 넘어 풍경을 바라보는 방식에 대한 은유로 확장된다.

작가는 특정 장소를 기록하기보다 도로와 그림자, 반영과 표식에 남겨진 인간의 흔적과 긴장을 포착한다. 익숙한 풍경은 개인의 기억과 경험을 거치며 새로운 회화적 장면으로 재구성된다. 전시의 마지막 공간은 정지된 풍경이자 영화의 한 장면처럼 펼쳐지며, 우리가 살아가는 땅의 표면, 곧 ’지구의 피부‘를 새롭게 바라보게 한다.

김덕희는 오는 17일부터 백남준아트센터에서 개최되는 전시 《달들》에 참여한다. 제1회 백남준 미디어 아트 페스티벌의 일환으로 기획된 본 전시는 백남준의 사유와 공명하는 동시대 작가들의 작품을 통해 백남준이 바라본 우주를 새롭게 제안한다. 

김덕희는 우주와 자연, 물질과 에너지, 시간과 공간을 아우르는 세계의 다양한 층위에 대한 깊은 관심을 다매체 설치 작업으로 전개하고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 인간의 삶을 이루는 시간성과 서사성의 실재에 대한 탐구에서 출발한 작가의 픽셀(pixel)시리즈를 대표하는 작품 “사과와 달”과 “부분 일식”을 선보인다. 작품은 이번 전시의 영문 부제, 《밝고 다양한 점들(The Bright Rainbow Dots)》을 김덕희의 시선에서 은유하며, 백남준의 행성적 사유로 이어지는 서사를 새롭게 전한다. 

Doki Kim is participating in 《Moons: The Bright Rainbow Dots》, opening on the 17th at the Nam June Paik Art Center. Organized as part of 1st NJP Media Arts Festival, the exhibition presents a renewed vision of the universe as imagined by Nam June Paik through the works of contemporary artists whose practices resonate with his way of thinking.

Kim develops multi-media installations that explore the many layers of the world, encompassing space and nature, matter and energy, as well as time and space. For this exhibition, she presents “The Apple and The Moon” (2024) and “Partial Solar Eclipse” (2024), two representative works from Kim’s “Pixel” series, which originated from her inquiry into the reality of temporality and narrativity that shape human life. The works metaphorically embody the exhibition's English subtitle, 《The Bright Rainbow Dots》, through Doki Kim’s artistic perspective, while offering a new narrative that extends Nam June Paik's planetary vision.

“Knot, Gravity” by Bae Yoon Hwan brings together a dense network of ropes of different colours and thicknesses, intertwined across the canvas. Once made to support something, the knots remain even after their original purpose has faded, becoming traces of endurance and connection. The elephant’s trunk and a pair of scissors quietly enter this structure, leaving open whether they seek to tighten the knot or cut it loose. The work reflects on the tensions we carry and the fragile structures that hold us together, until they become a landscape of their own.

작품 “Knot, Gravity”는 서로 다른 색과 굵기의 끈들이 캔버스를 가득 메우며 만들어낸 거대한 매듭의 풍경을 담고 있다. 무언가를 지탱하기 위해 만들어진 매듭은 시간이 흐르며 본래의 목적을 잃고, 버텨온 시간과 관계의 흔적으로 화면에 남는다. 화면 아래 등장한 코끼리의 코와 가위는 이 구조에 개입하며, 더 단단히 묶으려는 것인지 혹은 끊어내려는 것인지 그 의미를 열어둔다. 이 작품은 우리가 서로를 지탱하기 위해 만들어온 관계와 긴장, 그리고 시간이 쌓여 하나의 풍경이 되는 과정을 보여준다.

In the present exhibition, the elephant, the trunk, and objects detached from the body emerge as recurring motifs in Bae Yoon Hwan’s paintings.

The elephant, with its monumental body, resists easy assimilation into the speed and structures of contemporary life, while also reflecting the burdens and anxieties borne by the individual. Here, social conditions and personal experience converge, as external systems and inner sensations are distilled into a single pictorial form. No longer a symbol of strength or authority, the elephant appears instead as a body quietly enduring the pressures of time and weight.

이번 전시에서 코끼리의 몸과 코, 그리고 신체로부터 분리된 오브제들은 배윤환의 화면을 구성하는 핵심적인 도상으로 자리한다.

코끼리는 그 거대한 몸으로 인해 세계의 속도와 질서에 쉽게편입되지 못하는 존재이며, 동시에 개인이 짊어진 무게와 불안을 비추는 은유적 표상이다. 이때 사회적 조건 속에서 밀려나는 몸과 개인이 짊어진 불안은 서로 겹쳐지고, 외부 세계의 질서와 내면의 감각은 하나의 형상 속에 응축되어 나타난다. 화면 속 코끼리는 더 이상 힘이나 권위의 상징이 아니라, 무게와 시간의 압력을 묵묵히 견뎌내는 몸으로 현전한다.

In “This is an Example of That” (2008), developed in collaboration with John Baldessari, Koen van den Broek transforms film stills through cropping, color, and recomposition. Rather than reproducing images, he explores how they can be fragmented and reconstructed into new visual structures. This investigation continues in later works such as “Hoover” (2013) and “Madonna”, where artificial landscapes and historical imagery are reinterpreted through his distinctive painterly language. Together, these works trace the artist’s evolving exploration of image, surface, and perception.

존 발데사리와의 협업으로 완성된 《This is an Example of That》(2008)에서 쿤 반 덴 브룩은 영화 스틸 이미지를 자르고, 옮기고, 다시 구성하며 새로운 화면으로 전환한다. 반 덴 브룩은 이미지를 재현하기보다, 회화 안에서 어떻게 변형되고 재구성될 수 있는지를 탐구한다. 이러한 관심은 《Hoover》(2013)와 《Madonna》로 이어졌다. 인공적인 풍경과 고전 이미지는 작가 특유의 색면과 절단, 재구성을 통해 새로운 회화적 구조로 다시 태어난다. 전남도립미술관 4 전시실에서는 이미지와 회화의 관계를 끊임없이 확장해온 그의 작업의 흐름을 함께 보여준다.

Jimok Choi’s works are currently on view in 《Whispers Toward the Outside》 at the Daegu Art Museum. Bringing together eight artists, the exhibition explores how art can perceive the world through its quietest gestures.

Choi’s practice investigates light, afterimages, and the act of seeing itself. Translating the sensory traces left on the retina into airbrushed paintings, his works examine how visual experience takes shape as an image. Alongside a series of paintings, the exhibition presents the new installation Das Bild, inviting viewers to experience afterimages firsthand and to reconsider the relationship between perception and the world we believe we see.

최지목의 작업이 대구미술관 기획전 《바깥을 향한 속삭임》에서 소개되고 있다. 이번 전시는 가장 낮은 목소리로 세상을 감지하는 예술의 가능성을 탐색하며, 여덟 명의 작가가 각자의 방식으로 감각의 순간들을 펼쳐 보인다.

최지목은 빛과 잔상, 그리고 보는 행위 자체를 탐구한다. 빛이 망막에 남기는 감각의 흔적을 에어브러시 회화로 옮기며, 시각적 경험이 이미지로 형성되는 과정을 화면에 담아낸다. 전시에서는 회화 연작과 함께 신작 설치 《Das Bild》를 선보인다. 작품은 빛이 만들어내는 잔상을 관람자의 시야 안에서 다시 경험하게 하며, 우리가 본다고 믿는 세계와 지각의 관계를 새롭게 질문한다.

"Breathe" depicts an elephant performing a handstand on a deserted beach, balancing a small ball on the tip of its trunk amid rusted brass instruments scattered across the shore. Once activated by breath and sound, the abandoned instruments now lie scattered across the shore as silent remnants of another time. The elephant, meanwhile, quietly repeats a gesture embedded in its body, without audience or applause. Rather than presenting an act of spectacle, the painting dwells on the persistence of embodied action. The small ball delicately balanced on the elephant’s trunk suggests not a triumphant display but the fragile conditions of endurance.

"숨 쉬세요 Breathe"는 인간이 사라진 해변을 배경으로, 녹슬어 버려진 금관악기들 사이에서 홀로 물구나무서기를 하며 코로 작은 공을 띄우는 코끼리의 모습을 담은 작품이다. 한때 숨을 내보내고 소리를 만들던 악기들은 이제 해변에 방치된 잔해로 남아 있고, 코끼리는 관객도 박수도 없는 공간에서 몸에 각인된 묘기를 묵묵히 반복한다. 코끼리가 코끝으로 겨우 떠받치는 작은 공 하나는 거대한 숨이 아니라 의미를 잃은 뒤에도 멈추지 않는 생존의 최소 단위이며, 목적보다 습관이, 의미보다 몸이 먼저 움직인다는 사실을 조용히 증언한다.

《Sea of Time – TOHOKU》(2015-ongoing) is currently presented as a public demonstration at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall in Tokyo, offering a preview of the installation before its permanent home at the future Sea of Time Tohoku Museum in Fukushima.

Initiated by Tatsuo Miyajima in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, the project commemorates those who lost their lives while carrying memories of the disaster into the future. The installation brings together LED counters individually programmed by 3,000 participants, each representing a personal measure of time and the continuity of life. This presentation also serves as the final stage of testing the work’s spatial experience ahead of its permanent installation, with all admission proceeds supporting the establishment of the museum.

미야지마 타츠오의 작품 《Sea of Time – TOHOKU》(2015-ongoing)가 도쿄 니혼바시 미쓰이홀에서 공개 시연된다. 이번 전시는 후쿠시마에 건립될 Sea of Time Tohoku Museum 상설 설치를 앞두고 실제 전시 환경에 가장 가까운 형태로 작품을 경험할 수 있는 자리이다.

동일본대지진을 계기로 시작된 이 프로젝트는 희생자를 추모하고 재난의 기억을 미래로 이어가기 위해 기획되었다. 3,000명의 참여자가 직접 설정한 LED 카운터가 하나의 빛의 바다를 이루며, 각자의 시간과 기억을 연결한다. 이번 공개 시연은 작품과 공간의 최종 구현을 검증하는 과정이자, 미술관 설립을 위한 후원 프로젝트의 일환으로 진행된다.
