Alex Kim's Mindful Fragments series extends from Mindful Sketches, carrying the materials and traces of the installation into painting. Sugarcane paper used throughout the ongoing project is mixed with pigments to build textured surfaces, where accumulated marks, gestures, and fragments of memory become abstract compositions.

알렉스 김의《심상조각》은 설치 작업《심상 스케치》에서 이어진 회화 시리즈입니다.

작가는《심상 스케치》에 사용된 사탕수수 종이를 안료와 함께 섞어 화면을 만들고, 그 위에 드로잉과 흔적을 쌓아갑니다. 설치 작업에서 축적된 기록과 시간의 흔적은 작은 회화 안에서도 이어지며, 반복되는 선과 표면의 질감은 하나의 대상을 재현하기보다 감각과 기억의 단편을 화면 위에 남깁니다.

Access 200508, 356.352(B) began with traces encountered during a walk. The marks on a wall and the shapes created by light became the starting point for the drawing, which later expanded into a larger composition as the artist moved from pen drawing toward a larger-scale work.

다원의《Access 200508, 356.352(B)》는 산책 중 마주한 벽의 흔적에서 시작된 작업입니다.

작가는 벽에 드리운 빛의 형태와 표면에 남은 자국을 관찰하며 이를 드로잉으로 옮겼고, 펜화 작업을 시작으로 점차 큰 화면으로 확장해 나갔습니다. 반복적으로 쌓인 선들은 벽의 흔적을 그대로 재현하기보다 움직임과 리듬을 만들어내며, 일상에서 발견한 장면을 새로운 이미지로 전환합니다.

Dawon's Phantasmagoric Tableau reimagines a familiar animated character by placing them in an entirely different world. By shifting the character into a parallel setting, the work explores how identity and emotion transform when the surrounding circumstances change.

다원의《환등극화》는 특정 애니메이션 속 인물을 기존의 서사에서 벗어난 또 다른 세계로 옮겨와 새롭게 상상한 작업입니다.

작가는 전쟁 이후 쇠퇴해가는 시대를 살아가는 주인공을 전혀 다른 평행세계에 놓음으로써, 원작에서는 존재하지 않았던 또 다른 가능성을 만들어냅니다. 같은 인물이라도 처한 환경이 달라질 때 삶과 감정은 어떻게 변화할 수 있는지 질문하며, 익숙한 캐릭터를 새로운 이야기의 출발점으로 제시합니다.

Exhibition text,《TRACE BELOW》

Dawon arranges fragmented images and narratives through the visual language of comic panels and gutters, encouraging viewers to construct their own relationships and narratives. Alex Kim explores the accumulation of time and inner experience through repetitive acts of folding, unfolding, and crumpling paper. Together, their works create a continuous flow that moves beyond the distinction between painting and installation.

다원의 작업은 만화의 컷과 칸새 구조를 차용해 파편화된 이미지와 서사를 화면 위에 배열한다. 인간과 괴물, 상징적 요소들이 하나의 장면 안에서 결합하며, 명확한 이야기를 전달하기보다 관람자가 스스로 관계를 연결하고 서사를 만들어가도록 유도한다.

반면 알렉스 김은 종이를 접고 펼치고 구기는 반복적인 행위를 통해 시간의 축적과 내면의 흔적을 드러낸다. 그의 작업은 하나의 이미지를 완성하기보다, 과정 자체가 남기는 물성과 리듬을 공간으로 확장한다. 이번 전시에서 두 작가의 작업은 회화와 설치라는 매체의 차이를 넘어 하나의 흐름을 형성한다.

Work focus, Alex Kim

As part of his ongoing project Mindful Sketches, Alex Kim preserves not only the drawings themselves but also the traces left behind in the process. Worn pencils, graphite residue, and discarded erasers become an archive of repeated gestures, extending the act of drawing into a sculptural installation.

알렉스 김은《심상 스케치》프로젝트에서 드로잉뿐 아니라 작업 과정에서 남겨지는 흔적까지 함께 기록합니다.

종이 위에 반복적으로 선을 긋고, 지우고, 다시 그리는 과정에서 닳아버린 연필과 흑연 가루, 사용이 끝난 지우개는 더 이상 작업의 부산물이 아니라 또 하나의 기록이 됩니다.

작가는 이러한 잔여물들을 시간의 흐름 속에 축적하며, 하나의 이미지를 만들어낸 행위와 시간을 설치 작업으로 확장합니다. 결과보다 과정에 주목하는 그의 작업은, 보이지 않았던 창작의 흔적 역시 작품의 일부가 될 수 있음을 보여줍니다.

Alex Kim's ongoing project Mindful Sketches begins with a simple daily ritual of crumpling and unfolding paper. Drawings, erased marks, and accumulated traces are archived over time, transforming personal records into a spatial installation.

알렉스 김의《심상 스케치》는 종이를 구기고 다시 펼치는 반복적인 행위에서 시작됩니다.

작가는 매일 감정과 생각을 종이 위에 기록하고, 일부를 지우고 수정하는 과정을 이어갑니다. 그렇게 남겨진 흔적들은 하나의 이미지에 머무르지 않고 시간의 흐름에 따라 축적되며, 개인의 기록은 공간 속을 구성하는 설치 작업으로 확장됩니다. 이 작업은 완성된 결과보다 변화와 축적의 과정 자체를 드러냅니다.

Dawon arranges fragments of images and memories through the visual language of comic panels and gutters. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, the works invite viewers to discover their own connections between scattered scenes and traces.

다원은 만화의 칸과 여백이라는 시각 언어를 통해 이미지와 기억의 파편을 재구성합니다.

화면 속 장면들은 하나의 서사로 완결되지 않고 서로 느슨하게 연결됩니다. 관람자는 흩어진 이미지와 흔적 사이를 오가며 각자의 감각과 경험으로 새로운 관계와 이야기를 만들어갑니다.
