《Meditation: Myth and Memory》

𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘔𝘺𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 seeks to provide a space for meditation where myth and memory, as in Pai’s world, could be considered as companions, at times synchronous, and at times on their own path.

In the 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 series, a single point becomes a line, then a form, and appears to trail off to gesture to the space around it, going past the artist’s agency and into another realm. This work manifests Pai’s guiding ethos, where the artist’s mind (and the memories contained inside the artist) inform his beginning, but the development of the work is made in conversation with the material and the work.

𝘛𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘩 𝘚𝘶𝘱 𝘒𝘪𝘮: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 is on view at the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) (Korean Cultural Center New York) from September 17 through October 24.

The solo exhibition brings together works by Tchah Sup Kim (1940–2022), a significant figure in the lineage of Korean experimental art. The exhibition title comes from a phrase found in one of the artist’s notes. For Kim, a ”new world“ was not simply a vision of the future, but the possibility of thinking and seeing beyond established frameworks.

Throughout his life, Kim pursued fundamental questions about civilization and the cosmos, existence and humanity. After moving to New York in 1974, he studied printmaking at Pratt Institute and developed his unique visual language. Among the works on view, 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 (1976), a copperplate etching now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, introduced the triangle as a central motif that would continue to shape his practice. The work appears in the exhibition alongside representative works from across his career.

Kim‘s work is held in major institutional collections in Korea and abroad, including MoMA, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon.

𝘛𝘖𝘞𝘈𝘙𝘋𝘚: 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 moves beyond the familiar characterization of Kim Bohie (Bohie Kim/김보희) as a painter of Jeju landscapes, recognizing her as a significant figure who has expanded the formal legacy of Korean painting into a distinctly contemporary pictorial language and forged a singular trajectory within modern and contemporary Korean art. Shaped through prolonged observation, memory, and repetition, nature in Kim’s paintings is not a fixed view but a living world that assumes a different appearance with every shift of light and time.

Open views of the sea extending beyond the horizon appear alongside close-up images of palm fronds and fruit, as well as the monumental 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 (2022), first presented at the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art in 2022 and shown again in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel in Basel earlier this year.

김아영이 벨기에 메헬렌 전역에서 11월 1일까지 열리는 제11회 컨투어 비엔날레 《The Eyes of the Heart and the Soul of the World》에 참여한다.

Ayoung Kim (Ayoung Kim) is participating in the 11th Contour Biennale (Contour Biennale), 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥, taking place across Mechelen, Belgium, through November 1.

The 11th edition of Contour, an internationally renowned biennale dedicated to moving image and time-based media, is curated by Sofia Lemos and explores ways of sensing and perceiving the world amid the intersecting realities of ecological crisis and political violence.

At Kunsthal Mechelen, Kim presents 𝘈𝘭-𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘭𝘰𝘵 1991 (2025). Centering on the Al-Mather Housing Complex built by a South Korean company in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well as the artist’s own family history, the work traces histories of migration between Korea and the Middle East and the geopolitics of oil. Combining archival materials and recordings gathered over more than a decade with live-action footage, generative AI, and game-engine animation, Kim weaves personal memory and history into a new narrative, connecting disparate places and times with imagined futures. The industrial traces of Kunsthal Mechelen, a former car garage and petrol station transformed into a contemporary art space, further resonate with the work’s exploration of the intertwined histories of oil, migration, and technology.

Gallery Hyundai will be temporarily closed for Chuseok, September 24 through 28. Wishing You All a Happy Chuseok!

Christine Sun Kim’s (christine sun kim) 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘥 extends inquiry while shifting her focus from social structures toward her own interior world. While her earlier works often foregrounded a critical engagement with the norms of a hearing-centric society and the histories of the Deaf community, the works in this exhibition treat the mind as a spatial form, giving it shape, weight, and a sense of proximity. Kim explores shifting emotions and memories through her relationships with herself, her family, her children, friends, and those around her. Through the experiences of becoming a mother, building a family, and seeing her language and work reach wider audiences, Kim begins to treat the form of the mind in a more playful and experimental way.

Christine Sun Kim (christine sun kim) has been named to 𝘛𝘐𝘔𝘌’s (TIME) TIME100 Art list in the “Innovators” category, one of its four sections: Leaders, Titans, Icons, and Innovators. TIME100 Art is a new list from 𝘛𝘐𝘔𝘌 dedicated to influential figures in the art world.

𝘛𝘐𝘔𝘌’s Kate Brown noted, “Christine Sun Kim has become a defining voice of her generation by making visible society‘s relationship to sound—and the realities of Deafness. With humor and poignancy, Kim dismantles assumptions about hearing, language, and access through musical notation, infographics, and American Sign Language.”

Gallery Hyundai presents limited edition prints based on Kim Bohie’s (Bohie Kim/김보희) 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (2026) and 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (2025) in celebration of the artist’s solo exhibition 𝘛𝘖𝘞𝘈𝘙𝘋𝘚: 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.

“Towards,” a title Kim has returned to throughout her practice, suggests not arrival at a fixed destination but a gaze that continually reaches beyond what is immediately visible. Kim brings together landscapes observed at different moments and in different places, reconfiguring them through memory and sensation on a single pictorial plane. Past and present, near and far, observed landscape and inner image converge within a single pictorial space. Just as Kim’s gaze moves from seed to garden, from garden to sea, and from the smallest forms of life toward what lies beyond the horizon, her paintings never settle into a single, definitive landscape but continually reach beyond it.

The two prints are available at a special price throughout the exhibition and may be purchased at the art shop in front of Gallery Hyundai.

The shaped canvas paintings presented for the first time in 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘥 take the form of diptychs composed of an upper and a lower canvas. Continuing Christine Sun Kim's (christine sun kim) recent 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘥 series, Kim develops this new body of canvas works by exploring the possibility of translating the mind into spatial and sculptural form. Depending on shifting emotional states, one’s mind may feel closer to or farther from another mind, a memory of the past, or an object such as the moon.

Attentive to this fluid state of mind, Kim positions the mind and the object it encounters across the upper and lower canvases, using the distance between them to suggest shifting psychological proximity. The distance between the upper and lower canvases can change, suggesting the mind’s constantly shifting state.

The exhibition title 𝘛𝘖𝘞𝘈𝘙𝘋𝘚: 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 alludes to the moment of creation when light first emerges from darkness and the world begins to take form. It resonates with Kim Bohie’s (Bohie Kim/김보희) lifelong gratitude and reverence for nature, while extending beyond spiritual symbolism to describe a fundamental condition of her painting: light enables her to perceive change and time in the natural world and to translate those perceptions into pictorial form. Just as light allows the colors and forms of the world to become visible, Kim’s paintings begin with sustained attention to nature as it changes from one moment to the next.

In this sense, ‘There Was Light’ refers not only to the light by which the world becomes visible, but also metaphorically to that which summons the artist’s lived and remembered experience into the present tense of painting, drawing disparate times and spaces into a single pictorial landscape.

Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘔𝘺𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺, an exhibition of Korean American sculptor John Pai, a major force in the Korean American diaspora of the last half-century.

Pai is gaining heightened recognition for his indisputable contributions to sculpting with steel, a signature method of hand-welding numerous thin, short steel rods into a “drawing in space,” as well as his groundbreaking pedagogical methods since becoming the youngest appointed professor at Pratt Institute in 1965. All of Pai’s sculptures are born out of a dynamic field of inquiry unbridled by discipline, traversing topology, physics, phenomenology, and musical processes of improvisation. The presentation opens and centers around his major and most recent series 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 (2024) as well as the 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘺’𝘴 𝘚𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘴 (1997) trio, marking the first occasion it is presented as a group of three including two previously unseen pieces, accompanied also by a selection of sculptures and drawings.
